Is there a way to tell a difference between a failing motor bearing and normal commutator noise? I ask because my Kirby Heritage II's motor sounds really good, but I think, like many other old machines, the commutator makes just a little bit of noise on shutdown. Someone was trying to convince me that the bearings are about to fail, and I need to replace them ASAP. I don't think that it's the bearings. So, can you tell the difference between bearing failure and commutator noise? Thanks so much!

Jake,

I've two videos of my 1977 Kirby Classic III running that seem to suggest bearing wear.

With nozzle:

With hose:

Like you, the question begs to be answered: is it the bearings, or is it the commutator? You be the judge.

Oh,

It's definitely commutator noise. Yours does it too. Hear that dull clicking from the rear of the motor on shutdown? That's perfectly normal for an electric motor. A worn bearing has more of a whine to it, especially when running. Thanks for the videos, Ben! :)

Jake,

You are welcome. That is why I decided to pose this question after hearing of the experience you're facing with your Kirby motor, because in the case of my machine, my dad keeps telling me the bearings do not need replacement just yet.

but,

The bearings in yours are definitely a bit worn. I'd keep an eye on them and service the motor if they get any worse.

Jake,

I know. I will have dad look at them one of these days (can't say when).
