Robert scanned and posted Hoover Dial-A-Matic service instructions on Automatic Ephemera earlier today. He wanted to add another vacuum-related document to the ever growing library, and I thought this was a good one to put out there. The DAM can be a somewhat daunting machine to work on; at least that's how I felt the first few times I worked on one. I really just taught myself, by following these step-by-step instructions; especially when disassembling the motor. The service manual covers all models, both Self-Propelled and non Self-Propelled; and is a must-have if you've got a DAM and have the itch to tear it apart.
What's also interesting about this service manual is the fact that there are service instructions for the Self-Propelled transmission. There was a point in time where these were serviced in the field... I believe that because of how complex and time consuming these little transmissions are (lots of little parts), that Hoover eventually stopped servicing the transmissions and just replaced them if they were faulty.
I'm pretty meticulous when I get a any machine, that I completely tear the machine apart and clean/sanitize every last piece before I "add it to the collection" and put it to use. I hope people find these instructions useful, so those DAMs can be kept in service!
