I regularly check the local thrift shops. So few actually ever have vacuums, but hit a good one yesterday. Found an Electrolux Ambassador for only $12.00! Of course, the bag was jammed and the power nozzle wasn't working, but....worth the $12.00 just to tinker.
Brought it home; new bag = brilliant suction. Took the tank apart and cleaned the inside well. All the internals seem to be in good shape. Power nozzle also in good shape; however, the brush roll is very difficult to turn on one side. I think it's time to replace. So will be getting a new brush roll and belt while I'm at it. The hose....well that's another story. Cosmetically there are no breaches, but it leaks like a sieve. And the reason the power nozzle wasn't working....the main hose part had become separated at the pistol joint so that the contacts were not being made with the electric part of the hose. And the end where the hose fits into the pistol grip was all bent and maimed. How that ever happened? So fixed that and put the pistol grip back together. Voila, PN works. I'm going to try Adam's trick of wrapping the hose in Press and Seal to see if that will make it usable for a while until I can afford a new hose. I think I will keep this one around for a while for dusting. I've always been a Kirby man, but I hate disassembling it when I want to dust or do the kitchen floor. We'll see how it goes. |

Come to think of it i have never seen an Electrolux canister at a thrift store in San Diego county... my usual stomping grounds for all things vacuum. I think pros snap them up for resale on Ebay. Or lux may not have had a big presence there, or people hang on to them, or all of the above.
The hose on old machines seems to be the weak point. Considering a PRC copy runs $50 new, a brush roll will also set you back for a good one...well sometimes a cheap vac isn't so cheap is it? But they are more fun...good luck. This post was last edited 03/03/2014 at 09:39 |

Thanks, Robert. Yeah, I know this ends up being expensive. But I figure I'm not a drinker/partier; don't have many other hobbies...so I enjoy fixing up a vac now and again :) I wonder when it crosses the line into an obsession? Now that I'm divorced, I don't have a wife to keep my vac-love in check haha!

Years ago I found a Model G complete with the floor dusting brush, extra wands, and the clip on above floor dusting brush at a thrift store for $25. It also had a PN2 that came with it. It was probably the quietest vacuum cleaner I've ever heard. That's when the wife started interfering and made me sell it. It was such a sweet machine; in great shape, purred like a kitten!
While I've always been obsessed with Kirby's, even since I was a little child, several of my "southern" family members had Electrolux's and I have fond memories of them as well. I would love to find another one of those G's! |

That era of Lux is probably my all time favorite. The power heads are very effecient, they do an excellent job of cleaning and are very durable. Does that one have the idiot lights on top like the 2100..? |

Is that an Ambassador or Ambassador III? Also, what is the model? |

Ordered a new hose off EBay and it arrived today. Hard to believe how much that improved suction. This is one powerful canister! New brushroll does a superb job of grooming the carpet. I'm very impressed. I still think my Kirby's get deep down better with vibration, but this little gem will be added to my daily cleaning arsenal.
