Hello,

Here is an attempt to show all the models of Sidekicks and Sidekick IIs that have been manufactured over the years by Aerus/Electrolux USA since its introduction with the Marquise in 1987. Feel free to add your own pics and info.

I think the previous model should have been 1753A--I don't think there was a 1753.

Very nice lineup! In reply #9 that shows a sidekick I and II, that was actually an eBay item I won just a few days ago! I've not had a chance to hook the II up to my renaissance yet, but the "I" I paired up with my Silverado Deluxe is unstoppable!

When the Sidekick was introduced

Electrolux had Sidekicks for Kenmore, Hoover and Eureka so anyone that wanted one could have what was not out on their cleaner yet.

Sidekicks

The first pic is early box with 2 part styrofoam packing.Later a small box with lift up lid. There was an adapter kit to add sidekick to Disc style UR.Uprights later came with electric connection and deluxe kit had electric hose similar to tank. All SK used gear belt that did not slip & stretch.
Tig21er is right about the SK for other vacs. They came in a larger color box with adapter tube & cord.I may have some of these boxes in another box somewhere. The SK was same for all.Later the SK was standard with all deluxe tank and many UR and the Hoover,FQ,Eureka versions were dropped.

Completely fascinating... I knew about the early square sidekick but the first one I actually saw was the sidekick II that was included with the Epic 6500 SR my sister's best friend had. I really like the sidekick. That's my favorite attachment.

Thanks for the replies Steve (#12), John (#13), Jimmy (#14), and Christopher (#15).

Congrats on your purchase Steve and thanks for the compliment! I always like comparisons and timelines of products. Too bad Aerus doesn't have them on their product history chart.

Thanks for the info. John. I saw a pic of a Sidekick in Eureka packaging on another thread. Electrolux must have shared the profits with the other companies; otherwise I don't think think it could have used their names. Not a bad deal--Electrolux sells more of its product than it would have just by selling to Electrolux customers, and the other companies get a free test-run while they manufacture their own designs.

Jimmy, I appreciate your information about the boxes and the uprights' adaptors. What is a disc version? I'm not that familiar with the uprights. I'd like to see pics of the other brands' Sidekick packaging if you can do so.

Does anyone know which Sidekicks were sold with which machines originally? That's always nice to know from a collecting perspective.

Also, would one of the Sidekicks work with a '70s cleaner or before--if they didn't have electric hoses?

The sidekicks

that are on the uprights right now are the same as the first one out. A sidekick will work on 1205 hoses on. The electric hose with pigtail and handle that inserts into power nozzle wand will work to. That was the nice thing about it. you could sell a customer a sidekick even if they didn't need a new machine, just add to your cleaner. If you had a turbo tool that the customer couldn't get because it wasn't out yet, you could get in and sell something to them. How many times did you get a car and a new item was added and you wish you had and couldn't get? Buy a computer and it changes.

The Sidekick II in reply #17 was mislabeled. It is actually Model 1753.

Thanks for the message John (#21). Why did they go back to the old style of Sidekicks for the uprights? I thought the upright and canister attachments & hoses were interchangeable.

The Uprights

have always had the same sidekick. The same sidekick goes on the Low end canister..

It used to be true that they were kevin. Before the coming of the direct connect push button wand system on the Epic 6500SR all attachments were the same. The uprights used to have a plain hose, wands, and tools. The sidekick I was designed to fit the pistol grip metal/plastic handle ONLY on the canister vacuums. The sidekick II was designed to fit the all plastic direct connect wand system featured on the Epic 6500SR and the Renaissance. The sidekick II was used until the Guardian Ultra when the sidekick III came out. The uprights were only equipped with a sidekick when they were adapted for an electric hose instead of the regular non-electric hose. They were then able to utilize the sidekick I also on the hose handle. The sidekick I is still available for the Lux Classic model. The difference is in the hookups. Hope that helps clear it up.

Sidekicks

Disc = Discovery
There was no need to share profit. It was just an official way to adapt a quality Elux att if customer kept an off brand vac.
Part of the first Sidekick adapter kit was a plastic hose handle with metal end to replace the all plastic end of standard att kit.
The SK could be used on non electric hose using a strap cord as on L & G(or first upright kit) if metal end had notches to latch on or a tight friction fit.

Sidekicks for Canadian Electrolux models?

kirbytradition7's profile picture
Were there Canadian versions of the Sidekick (ie, for the Canadian Electrolux models)?

I have a 1982 AP280; would that be too old for a Sidekick?

I bought an AP280 new in 1981 and a Sidekick did not come with the machine. A few years later I did buy a sidekick separately to use with the AP280. I'm not sure when they first started being sold.

Sidekick,cont

First SK was about 86-88. After Silverado. Quickly became popular. Rainbow had a similar electric version (optional)about the same time. Kirby and many central vacs had used an air turbine brush previously.

Thanks for answering my questions and giving me more info., John (#26), Christopher (#27), and Jimmy (#28)!

I didn't realize there was a Sidekick III, and that the I and II designations marked the style of the unit--not the era like one would expect.

Jimmy, what model of Sidekick has the pigtail connection that will work with a non-electric hose vac?

Post# 268697 , Reply# 33   2/20/2014 at 15:15 (3,716 days old) by rugsucker (Elizabethton TN)
Sidekick,cont again

There was no SK with an attached cord.If it was not on a direct connect Elux electric hose as had been used on 1205 and later you could insert hose and then plug cord onto the 2 round pins as also used on sheath cord, etc. That was why the SK could easily be used on the Hoover,Filter Queen and Sears/Eureka type with the hose adapter and cord included in the one package.

Thanks, Jimmy (#33). I'm just trying to figure out how to find an adapter. Does it have a name or product #? I'm assuming it would work with just a Sidekick i?

Sidekick,cont once more

Before most vacs had electric hose with built in and direct connect connections strap on and adapter cords were more common and most canister and some central vacs used same size 2 pin connection.Cords should be still found in different lengths at some vac stores and suppliers.

These seem to have been sold with Kenmore vacuums as well, since the early 1990s. Also, the Sidekick II looks a lot like the Petpowermate that came with my new Kenmore Progressive canister.

Wow kevin and rugsucker, you have taught me something new tonite. I never knew the uprights had been equipped with a non-electric hose with a strap-on cord to operate the Sidekick. Just goes to show how easy it is to miss a step in the evolution of any particular machine... Now the hose is just like a hose on the Lux Classic canister and no strapped cord is present. It's also worthy of note that while Electrolux might have designed them, and while they might say "by Electrolux" on them, the Sidekick was not made by Electrolux. They were never made at the Lux plant to my knowledge. They always came from overseas, did they not? I was aware that the Kenmore Powermate was the same as the Sidekick, and I believe the Rainbowmate is the same isn't it? Huge Lux fan here. Keep it comin' as I love this.

Thank you for the additional information, Cole (#41).

I was also going to inquire about a 'Dust-Kick'. Someone on Ebay has that name along with 'Sidekick' on a listing. Is/was that a type of Sidekick?

more Sidekick

Good pics. This att box was direct shipped to the customer possibly because they sold faster than branches received inventory (as with the first Mo E).The big box held hose with all plastic hose end,2 wands, above floor & crevice. The SK adapter was in a smaller rectangular box with cord, straps,& hose end with metal end.SK camer from branch inventory. The strap cord was similar idea as the CB 2000 of the same time.Straps were installed with a button hook type tool.
Only motor came from overseas as I understood it.R Bow & Sears were similar but different.Elux was better with gear belt.
Never heard of 'dust kick'name.

Interesting trivia, Jimmy (#44)--thanks. I'm beginning to wonder if "Dust Kick" is a generic name or even made up.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a wand connector and cord for my Sidekick? I have non-electric hoses.
Also, the sales rep at a vaccum store said that it sounded like the motor bearing was going out. Can the bearing be replaced, and is it an easy job for an amateur such as myself? If it is replaceable, where can I obtain a bearing?

It's interesting to note that the first version of the Sidekick did not have a model identification. It likely was what would become known as Model 1562.

Wondering now if the black button on those first units was a reset rather than an on/off switch, and if so if they even had on/off switches; or were they like the first power nozzles that just went on when you plugged in their pigtails?

The Sidekick with the "rocker" switch was an on/off switch because at that time, the machines didn't have a switch on the handle. The round push button was reset. If I remember right, the Lux man demonstrated one to me in the store once and he turned the Sidekick on and off from the rocker switch.

Post# 272143 , Reply# 55   3/16/2014 at 15:41 (3,692 days old) by kevin (Livonia)

This is very similar to the Sidekick in the original post, but it has the on/off switch. You will also note that the box and manual are a bit different. I don't know if there were different versions of the actual Model 1562 (I know there are different look-alike models), so it's hard to tell if this was one of the first ones or not. Maybe Jimmy or John know?

Nice price, huh?

I really like that Sidekick. I think that gray model is unique to the Ambassador III and Epic 3500SR of the mid 1990s. I've had a couple of those. The uprights are around, but the Ambassadors aren't too common. There's an oyster/for variant that matches the same models of those vacuums, as well. The only person I know who might have one is John Pease. The original Sidekick is my favorite handheld power nozzle.
