Change always happens in organizations .....no matter who is in charge. It will happen by virtue of growth alone. I ask those of you who are not happy with the club to become part of the solution...give your ideas, join the board, host a convention....etc. Barb |

Vacmom,
You are right, change does happen and will always happen. The thought that many of us are rich and powerful makes me laugh. I live a very simple life in a very simple home with lots of wonderful friends. Our convention costs are very minimal and everyone that attends has a wonderful time. This has been an on going conversation for years. The membership voting body made the decision and has discussed it at several meetings. Reading through these threads makes me realize that we are not the only club moving forward and protecting our planet by going green. It sounds like the same folks complaining here have also had problems in other clubs and organizations they belong to. Perhaps it is time for them to form their own exclusive group, write their own newsletters and carry on like it is 1950. I for one am looking forward to the VCCC moving forward and having a wonderful time in Ohio! |

I despise personal attacks on a open format. One can most certainly have an opinion that is fine, but it can be done so without attacking someone personally. This entire newsletter thing should be easy to resolve.
Have a beef - send a private message! Alex has said on many occasions he is able and willing to act as editor and get something out and no one has responded to his generous request. Inasmuch, with many, many intelligent people here some solution should be able to be ratified by the membership. For the record - The entire membership did receive a poll I am thinking two maybe three years ago on what they would prefer; electronic or printed newsletter. The poll was conducted by then Vice President Rick W. I remember very clearly receiving it and completing it. I for one like the idea of the electronic newsletter...yes save a tree and it was decided to put the letter in a pdf format. Very easy to print if you so choose. You can even send it to FedEx office via attachment and they will print it and you can pick it up. (2.10 per page for color copy) Seems to me that was a great solution. With that said - let peace and harmony prevail. If you read through the postings as far as activities and such that are offered to the members - it is always the same people working to pull it together ie: Barb! If you don't have resource to attend the convention okay...but you can still be part of the solution via internet. Love and light to you all!! |

Some of you will remember when we lost our home to a fire in Washington DC. The outpouring of love, concern and phone calls left me speechless.
Morgan - called several times to check on us and offered his banking expertise too when we had issues with our claim and the bank. The thoughtfulness and love will never be forgotten. Morgan is a good man in our eyes and one day I am going to get him and Mark out here to play in the snow! Morgan will have a hay day with the snow blower on a 5,000 foot long drive. LOL!! Then some of the senior members got together and purchased and sent me a replacement for my most prized vacuum I lost in the fire. A BRAND NEW FILTER QUEEN 31!! It will be proudly displayed in our new home. Again - Love to all!! |

Thank you Louis, that was a great post!!! I'm am more than thrilled to hear that you guys are working on a website home for the VCCC as a separate club, it is a marvelous idea. I think it is an important thing to do.
With this news of a VCCC website coming soon, I'm going to update the clubs page since it is so out of date and has erroneous information on it. Now it will be a temporary placeholder for a few months until you all can get your site up and running. As for Vacuumland, it will continue to exist and go on as it has been. Both the VCCC site and Vacuumland can exist together in harmony, and both sites will fulfill very different needs of it's members. Vacuumland will continue to be an open forum be for people who want to correspond about vacuums, appliances and most other topics that are important to the member's lives. Vacuumland will continue to be open and paid for by voluntary contributions and advertising. I've been running automatcwasher.org since 2001 and after 13 years, I have no intention to close either site. Thank you again Louis and please keep us posted! I know you guys are going to do something great for the VCCC. |

In two private emails I told both Barb and Morgan that I was NOT going to get involved with this and I'm not. But I will say this. Neither the Vacuum Cleaner Collector's Club, or Vacuum Land are the club John Lucia and I formed in 1983. That died at the meeting in May of 95, when I walked away!
This mess, and by the way, I'm very upset by it all, is a result of my abandoning ship. What John and I started, has spiraled out of control. Feelings are getting hurt, friends fighting, and so on. The problem as I see it is that we got too big too fast. The club started out as a teaching group to provide information to people interested in vacuum cleaners, and the background information on them. It was to be a fun group.
Then in 1984, Mike Pupek suggested to me that we have a gathering of the few people in the club. The first 'meeting' was in my mom's home in Indiana. A small, quiet group, having a lot of fun and talking shop. Now we have conventions, and they are fantastic. The club has grown to immense proportions, but with it the problems are staggering. And I refuse to take sides in that area.
As for the newsletter, I'd love to do it, love to get involved again, but I can accept a newsletter done electronically, as long as there is SOMETHING for us to read. Also, I'd like to see the webpage open and updated again, and I'd be more than willing to do the work.
As for the rest of this mess, don't ask me to take sides. I won't.

If you want to know what the original VCCC meetings were like, here's the TRUTH. It cost $25 for the 'convention fee' per person. That included the cost of the meeting room, lunch for everyone (NO peanut butter sandwiches or Cheetos) - many different kinds of bread, meats, cheeses, snacks, condiments, and refreshments. There was NO alcohol allowed. No one under 18 could attend without a parent present. The meetings were a wonderful time, filled with sharing of knowledge and machines. We had the cleaning contests which took most of the day, and we also served pizza and refreshments one evening. All this for $25. We selected inexpensive hotels, since the meeting room was where everyone would normally be, not in their individual rooms. The friendships I personally made back then are still ongoing today.
The VCCC, for me, for a long time was a labor of love. I personally wrote and produced and mailed the newsletter for over 100 members. I was a pro-active President of the Club as was R.J.Vanik. Most people don't know there is an entire set of bylaws the club adopted, but they were discarded by the board several years ago. Many in the club have been kept in the dark either through omissions or outright lies, as to what really happened to split up the club. For me, that's ancient history. The Vacuum Cleaner Museum has become a reality and is the first one in the world. Every day when I go to work, it's like hosting a convention again (I hosted six of them in the time I spent with the VCCC). If anyone wants to come play with virtually every model vacuum ever made, come to the Museum. The hotel rooms in St. James are $55 per night, the museum is FREE to the public. Many former and current VCCC members have visited and all have had a great time. |

The V.C.C.C. C. meetings you talk about were the ones I ran, and they were a lot of fun. I had a great time planning them, but the fact is, aside from the $25.00 fee, I covered ALL additional expenses other than meals in restaurants, and motel rooms. But also remember there were no more than 20 members.
All changes happened after I retired and passed it on to you. After that I was gone. |

Minor correction. The original 'meeting' was held in Chesterton, Indiana May 4, 5, 6, 1985, and consisted of John Lucia, Mike Pupek, Tom Shimmik, Norbert Miller, Anne R. Taber (club secretary) and me. Then in August (85) I bought a house in Naperville, Illinois and made that V.C.C.C. headquarters. All meetings were in my home, mostly in my museum which was a former 3 car garage, transformed into the V.C.C. clubhouse. And that was what you were in that spring of 93. That was the last of the in-home meetings, from there we went to Hoover in 94, and to the home of Bob Kautzman (Vac-Hunter) in 95. But from 85 to 93, I ran it all. The term 'convention' was never a part of my gatherings. As I said the idea was to have fun and learn from each other. You were the first person to offer a vacuum cleaner give away when you brought a van load of vacuum cleaners for distribution. And I still have the cardboard box to the Electrolux model LX that you gave me.
Those were fun times, simpler times, and some of my best memories.

I remember the vacweb.com forum. When I first found it I thought I hit a gold mine. I printed out by month all the archives. I found so much knowledge about vacuums their. Then it was closed. A very sad day for me.
I am a member here and enjoy it very much. I post a few things now and then and made a library up of my collection to share with everyone. I also like looking at other peoples collections. When I was younger my only resource was going into a vacuum store or hardware store to look at the vacuums. Malls were not heard of. Ok so I was born in 1951, telling on myself. This site means a lot to me and I read it several times a day. The only convention I have been to is the one in Canton Ohio at the Hoover Historical Society. Not the last one, but the one when Tom Gasko was President of the club. I don't travel much and am scarred of flying so that limits where I can go for the annual club event. I hope I can make it to Kirby as it is one of my favorite vacuums.... With that said, I read many times the Officers of this club asking for material for the next newsletter. I remember filling out a survey on paper or electronic. I think the electronic works great and enjoy receiving them. However I understand and appreciate the work of others to make a quarterly newsletter. Quite frankly I wonder sometimes how they get enough to fill a newsletter up..... Moral of the story, this site has a wealth of information and I use the archives a lot to do research on vacuum cleaners I remember as a child. I would hate to see this website close. It is monitered and maintained very well and I appreciate all the work done by all the contributors that make this website and newsletter possible. I also have made some friends that I exchange emails with that I enjoy very much... Thank You All, Sincerely, PR-21 Bud Mattingly |

Frankly I'm exhausted with all this. I got little sleep last night worrying about the clubs (V.C.C.C. and Vacuumland) we need to table all the hurt feelings, and get on with life.
Let's all agree to disagree, but I for one do not want another migraine tonight, so enough already!
