one helluva deal on that one! I just saw one in mint looking condition for $200 and thought that was a pretty good price.
Why in the world would they toss it out? I saw a number of vacs next to a dumpster at a thrift store recently but i didn't dare ask if they were being tossed...otherwise i would have felt the need to save them. Nothing in that group (all low-line bagless crap vacs as i recall) was even close to your find however, congratulations.

Brushstrip

I've replaced a few of those, they aren't to expensive. Just be sure to get the 18 inch strip, not the 14 since yours is the "big foot" model.

After I cleaned it up I took it to work and my mom's workers where shocked on how well it did at the church we clean it ate everything in its path and left the carpets looking and feeling like new in fact the church called me to ask what vac it was to buy one (they have a commercial oreck xl) so I told them and they got one a 14in model and they love it so much and now its the vac I take to work
