I dreamed last night that I was performing in an old concert hall. I was up on a very large stage, and the auditorium that stretched out from it was huge. I was singing in some sort of opera or choral work. (If you've ever heard me singing, you know what a wild fantasy this dream was!)

I went down to the dressing rooms which were under the stage where people were getting makeup applied. There were long rows of chairs and mirrors and old-fashioned wooden cabinets painted white. I stood in front of one of the mirrors and a lady came over and put makeup on my face with a sponge.

Next I went into a long maze-like corridor behind and underneath the stage, the intent being to get back up to the stage. I was walking with another person, a young lady. As we were walking along, the thought crossed my mind, "I wonder if there are any old vacuum cleaners back here."

No sooner had that thought entered my mind than we turned a corner in the hallway and there in a sort of alcove -- like a space under a corner stairway -- was one of those large cast-iron commercial-type floor buffers. It was painted a bright blue color and was very old-fashioned looking. It sat on a kind of rocky, concrete ledge that was all bumpy and rough-surfaced, just like you'd see in the corners of an unfinished basement. The polisher was covered with dust and schmutz and the paint was peeling and badly scratched.

I exclaimed to the lady walking with me, "Now isn't that something -- what a funny coincidence! I was just thinking that there might be some old vacuum cleaners back here, and the very minute I thought that, we came upon this old floor buffer!"

She laughed with me and then a guy came walking toward us. She told him what had happened. He said, "Oh, there are a lot of them back here!" He continued walking on past us, and we continued in the same direction.

We turned another corner in the hallway and in a similar space as the floor polisher I saw an old Hoover upright. I hurried over to get a closer look at it. It was a coffee-can style machine but unlike one I'd ever seen. On both sides of the top of the agitator housing were triangular panels of mottled brown bakelite that curved around the motor housing. In other words, the two outer corners of the bakelite were sharp and angled but the sides facing the motor housing were curved and wrapped around the motor. There was another, smaller triangular panel of bakelite behind the motor. The bakelite panels were raised up somewhat from the housing and were surrounded by thin, smoothed-off metal rims.

I mused to myself, "Wow! I've never seen a Hoover like this with bakelite on it. I wonder what model it is." I picked the machine up by the handle bale and turned it over. Underneath, it was all dusty and cobwebby with dirt caked on it, and there were only the sad remnants of an agitator -- bristles worn down to nubs and with a lot of threads and ravelings tangled up inside it. The bottom was so grotty that I couldn't make out a model number. I then realized the machine had no bag or cord so I thought to myself, "That's really a shame that this rare old Hoover is in such bad condition."

The next thing I remember was being up on stage again, and the dream became one of those awful "standing naked in front of a crowd" kind of nightmares -- I was about to sing a song, but I had a sudden sickening realization that I had no idea what the song was, nor the words or music! I got a desperate feeling and looked around for the music to see if I could grab the book and sing my part from it, but there weren't any music books around me.

Just then, I (mercifully!) woke up with a start. It took a moment to sort it all out and realize it was just a dream, but it left me feeling shaken and kind of sick to my stomach and the rest of my sleep through the night was not sound but restless and fitful.

When I woke up this morning, I still felt crummy and out of sorts. I had a hard time waking up and getting out of bed despite the alarm clock buzzing away. I continued to feel icky all morning long. I am still feeling drowsy and "out of it," and am about to take a nap. I wonder what landscape in Dreamland I'll find myself in.......
