National Geographic crew came last summer to give a look to my vacuum-cleaner collection here in Italy and - after many delays - the program is now airing worldwide on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL ( and other channels from the SKY - FOX group ).
They were very nice guys and kind and hopefully the program should be something interesting for collectors like us, even if they probably will present it as a "curious" passion. Some collectors did not appreciate the attention and declined the oportunity of displaying their collection. I did not, cause I am proud of it and enjoy every minute of my many different hobbies. Ignorant people who get nervous or aggressive for things they don't know or understand do exist and always will, so...who cares ?
Some other collectors from this site will also feature in this television-special, as far as i know.
By now,it has aired for sure in Brasil, Belgium and Uk but have not seen it yet cause it's arriving in Italy only in late march.
Anyway, I have been told the following article has been published on the DAILYMAIL site :
www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/articl...

Hope you enjoy and leave comments. Cheers from Italy ! GUIDO

I'll go through the sky EPG in a mo and find it!

Oh, and you really should move to a bigger place Guido!

Oh, and please don't take the daily fail too seriously. I'm very surprised they didn't link collecting Vacs to cancer or global warming tbh

The smallest of them all ! A hand vacuum by LESA - called SPALESINA - in its 2 versions : the blue one had a special attachment for car use ( lighter-plug and 12 volts motor, today extremely rare with this colour scheme ) while the white one was for regular home use at 220 volts. Both very noisy but powerful. The streamlined design is an italian icon of industrial design of the 1950's and almost every family use to have one !

This is a fascinating oddity from the 80's - also an italian icon, with its serious and "military" look - which had a giant success in its days ! It was produced by defunct ALFATEC firm, which closed its doors in the first 90's, few months after the founders sudden death. This was a great cleaner . I still don't have one, so the image is from a design magazine :

Oh yes !

guido's profile picture
Yes, that's it ! And in very good conditions too !
LESA had a distribution in the USA too called "LESA OF AMERICA", based in New York city.
This little marvel was created by MARIO BIANCARDI - a project manager at LESA - in far 1957. A copy of it is displayed in the TRIENNALE DESIGN MUSEUM in MILANO, together with the VESPA, the original FIAT 500 and other italian design icons of the 1950's.
After this funny-looking vacuum-brush, a more square model called "SPALESINA 2" was launched too, as a sort of ugly re-styling.
LESA closed its doors quite suddenly in 1970 - after years of top selling their famous line of portable turntables ( the socalled LESAPHON line ) - due to low sales ( Japanese products arriving from east such as NATIONAL-PANASONIC, SANYO, etc were lighter and cheaper new products, and quickly destroyed the internal market of the time ). Heavy workers strikes did the rest and LESA was closed by the italian government together with other famous brands like MAGNADYNE, GELOSO, PHONOLA, etc.

However, I searched the program listing for the rest of the day today (Wednesday) from around 6:30 p.m. and through the entire following week and didn't find any listings for "Clash of the Collectors at all, incluuding none for today. I wonder if it will air in the U.S. on a different date. I'd sure like to see it.

SPALESINA

Hello Guido,

I recall visiting my physiotherapist as a boy during the mid to late 1960's and one day he produced a cream coloured rounded plastic bodied mini vac which now was obviously of the SPALESINA type.

Do you know which make this could have been? I had never seen one before or since.

Great pictures. Love that particular type of bag thats fitted to your Hoover 700.

Does your 541 run well?

Love the TORNADO cleaners, a friend and fellow collector has one; very well made and good performer. I think that a well designed stick type cleaner is so versatile.

I'm sure that the LINCOLN was marketed under the PHILLIPS brand in the 1970's over here and was in dark orange.

If we ever have a UK vac connvention You and Tommy (Milan) would be very interesting to meet.

Was it you or tommy that won the original and complete Hoover 160; it came from Wales which is about one hours drive from me?

Regards, Walter.

Okay, I've posted the video. It's a fairly big file, about 150mb, so it may take a couple of minutes to download -- depending on how fast your internet connection is.

I suggest you right-click the link and choose "Save Link" rather than just sit here and wait for it to load. Then you can play it from your computer at your leisure.

This is a privately hosted file, so please don't pass the link around all over the place and send my bandwidth through the ceiling. Thanks!

Hi WALTER !

guido's profile picture
Thanks Walter,

the SPALESINA vacuum-brush was produced in ivory-white or blue colour, both with red finishings. But they were quite common in europe in the 1950's and many small appliance factory had their own ( similar ) models such as CGE ( the LIZ brush ), ADLER, ELCHIM, etc . HERE ATTACHED IS ANOTHER FAMOUS VACUUM brush from 1955 produced by Elchim ( wich stood for ELettromeccanica CHIMiniello ) with design by GIUSEPPE DE GOETZEN and won the 1955 COMPASSO D'ORO award for industrial design.

Yes, my HOOVER 541 runs good, even if it sounds little bit "tired" due to the fact that the fan is missing some blades . I will try to find a spare one in the future, Also the bag holder is missing, but I renovated the chassis quite well few years ago.

The TORNADO was found almost MINT IN BOX about 15 years ago but short after it was brought to the basement for about 12 years. All attachments, original stand, cable and original box were lost ( ! really sorry about that ! ) and it even collected rust, shame on me, really.

In case this years convention will take place in UK, I will surely be there ! Hopefully Tommy - wich I meet quite regularly - will also join us ! That would be great !

The downside to this television program is that, as expected I suppose, there's a slightly mocking tone to the story -- little hints about all the collectors all being single (wink-wink-nudge-nudge), spending all their spare money on - what? - vacuum cleaners?! - having so many machines that their living spaces are overrun with them - their family members (with one VERY RARE exception) complaining about "all the damn vacuums" etc. etc. etc.

I love it when I tell someone I collect vacuum cleaners and their reaction is a blank stare and then a perplexed "--Why?"

Having been teased, mocked, ridiculed and dismissed all my life because I collect vintage vacuum cleaners does make me a bit sensitive to this aspect of my interest in them. Granted, the show does take a kinder approach than television shows have sometimes done in the past, where the hapless collectors are made to look like absolute fools. But still, there's that subtle undercurrent of "These guys really are kooks, aren't they!"

The upside for me, personally, is that the collector with 330 vacuum cleaners doesn't make me feel so had somehow! I only have about 40 or so - granted, that's down significantly from about the approximately 150 of them that I had at one time. But I'd never want to go back to having that many again. It really does become a burden.

The other upshot is the surprising number of people there are who like vintage vacuum cleaners. Most of my life, until 1990 when I met another vacuum cleaner collector for the first time, I thought I was the only nut on the planet who liked old sweepers. But I'm far from alone, as it turns out. The Internet has brought together all sorts of groups of like-minded people, and that does include the kooks who collect vacuum cleaners. We're gonna take over the world!! hahahahahaha

Thanks for posting that !

And thanks for your comments, I totally agree with you. I was fearing they might make it sound like a "disease" or something similar, so - after watching the episode - I started breathing again !
But they were serious enough not to do that, as they had promised. Of course, they underlined the collections as "unusual", time consuming and "space-killers" for our families, but the main intro clearly and cleverly explaines that - all over the world - like it or not - people collect everything ( as you also say on your website, right ? ).

I also enjoyed the quick and funny cut of the episode - which is pleasant - and I suppose the imaginary competition among us collectors was the " blending element " for all three collections, that's all.

Finally, you Charlie are from an earlier generation of vacuum collectors then me...probably the ones that started it all !
Internet, online markets and well done forums like VACUUMLAND made the rest.
I remember seing some Hoover marvels for the first time on your site, many years ago, and saving much precious info about the different models.

Sincerely, I am not sure I would have started an "official" vacuum collection if I hadn't seen your wonderful cleaners first !!!! I probably had stopped much earlier with my few machines.
And also I remember getting sad when you had started giving so many vacuums away ! I couldn't believe you was getting rid of so much beautiful stuff ! ( at the time I was still looking for a pink convertible, i remember ! )
Maybe giving some stuff away really were the seeds that are now spreading around the world, who knows !?

Anyway it did work !

Maybe you didn't know about that but...thank you also for introducing me to this crazy-funny world of cleaners that I am enjoying everyday more !

Cheers from Italy !

Hi Guys

Here are some of my pics from when they filmed me, I have not seen the documentary yet, I tried to download Charlie's link but I only manage to get as far as Scotts Collection before it times out.

As I stated in another thread I am very worried as to how they portrayed me and how they twisted what I was saying, They also were only interested in part of my collection and would not let me Focus on many of the models I like the most.

All of these pics were taken when they filmed me. I have also downscale'd my collection considerably since then too

Guido, thanks for your kind comments. I didn't know I was responsible for "introducing you to this crazy-funny world of cleaners." It makes me happy to hear that. :)

Believe me, no one was sorrier (at the time) than me to have to give away and, ultimately, throw out, so many vacuum cleaners, accessories and parts. I cried many bitter tears during that process and I do still miss certain machines that I had cherished.

But in the passing time since then, I can say it was for the best, actually. I don't have nearly as much stuff to shovel around as I did before. I still have more than the average person of course! But the size of my collection is fairly manageable now. I just have to watch how many of them sneak upstairs into our apartment from my workshop, lest I start heard mumblings about "all these f$#%¢@£ vacuums all over the place..."

Garrett why don't you try to do right-click on Charlie's link and save it as I did, it's an MP4 format.

Anyway - as I think you will notice - they have put 1 % of what they filmed for the show. I also would have like some more focus on certain models, but it seems they wanted to concentrate more on the collectors rather then on the collections themselves.

As I noted, the cut of the show is quick and quite funny, I personally feel well about it and - anyway - not offended at all.

( Wish they had avoided the last images of me, on the show - where I seem worried to win, or something : it was the last day of shooting and I was really ill and got a cold, so my face looks little bit strange and upset, but I actually was just going to SNEEZE ! AHAHAHA )

Anyway a funny experience !

Charles, I think your site was one of the first I discovered too, actually. We got the internet in 2002, so I'm going back 12 years (and 4 house moves!) and even at 24 my memory ain't what it used to be.

Jack had The Vintage Hoover Emporium up and running too, with pretty regular updates. I remember reading through that and 137.com (as it was at the time) and being amazed by the stories and info and just STARING for hours at the pictures.

Having had a rather unsupportive family around me all my life up to that point, and being convinced I was somehow wierd or strange and should hide my interest as best I could, the discovery of those 2 sites and subsequent discovery of Hooverland on Yahoo Groups and then of course vacuumland was probably one of the greatest things to ever happen to me.

Be it intentional or not, stumbling across yours and Jack's sites all those years ago has led to some incredibly happy times and brought some of the greatest people (and the worst people) I know into my life, so I owe you both. Big time.

I think we can all relate to that startling, yet amazing discovery that we have all made:

OH. MY. GOD. There are OTHERS!

I still have not had enough time to watch it yet. But I will say that I am not a hoarder, as Gareth has said many of the machines seen in the program either have been sold off or will be very soon. Plus, since the filming my garage has gotten about 10 times better. I now have it all somewhat organized and I now have a workstation set up. I think I should post some pictures of that!

I too have started ridding myself of newer machines which I do not and will never use, especially if there is a new one I would like to try.

Scott

Hey SCOTT !

guido's profile picture
Nice to see you here, Scott ! Sorry but I didn't know your username to contact you before !
Hope you will enjoy the show too, as I did.

In my case I must say that my house did not get better since the filming of the show, even if I have moved much stuff to an unused ex-guestroom for being able to make some polishing at least one day a week, with the help of a "well trained" maid.

But the number of vacuums really went up in the last months - reaching about 200 machines - especially during my last trip to London last november, where I was able to find some really old and nice HOOVERS ( I am posting some nice new arrivals on this same thread in few time ). I must admitt that the general interest for my vacuum-collection shown in this program, certainly gave me possibility to do make a step forward, above all with the persons around me and with my father, who had never considered the thing as "interesting" at all. I suppose he has now undertood that it really does make a sense.

As far as "hoarders" reference, well I suppose nobody spoke of hoarders neither here nor in the show. Hoarders are people that collect usually EVERYTHING or MANY KIND OF THINGS, with no project at all, in whatever condition they are, thinking they might actully need them one day, usually careless of higyenic conditions, etc. Which is not our case, no doubt. So I wouldn't worry about such comparison, if I were you.

Well, I will now post some pics of the AFTER-THE-SHOW-MACHINES ! Cheers from Italy

HOOVER 800 - working fine - the spring that protects the cable going from the motor-housing to the handle has been replaced with a plastic tube BUT the original spring has been kept ( you can see it hanging in the plastic bag on the left ! )

A strange HOOVER 262 with grey hammertone color scheme.
Other collectors say it's a rebuilt machine, but I am not sure, as the underside of the machine and even the motor-space are that color. Many details - such as the screws, the HOOVER plaque indicating features, etc - have no trace of having been repainted. If it is a rebuilt one, must have taken really much time to do that !

I thought the show was great.

Though the "contest" was a little silly, at least 3 great collectors got some airtime. You guys all did a great job. Your collections are all quite impressive. I wish all young collectors had a supportive parent like Scott's mom. Gareth, I enjoyed seeing your large and unusual collection. And Guido, your Italian collection (and others of other origin) are unique and fascinating. I especially like the floor polishers with bags - something we never got here. Scott...you've done a good job of organizing your stuff to not disrupt the household. That's not easy to do, is it?

Congratulations, guys! That was fun to see.  - John L.

Well, I have finally seen it and I must first say, Gareth, Guido, you both have really wonderful and well restored collections! I think the program turned out alright. Not as bad as I had expected plus they didn't really take much out of context from me. I think the competition was a bit silly though.

However, that lux model 60? Definitely not my absolute favorite machine.

Plus I'm surprised that take with my vorwerk falling off the wall made it in.

Scott

PS: Thank God my garage is not like that anymore!

Hey Scott I hear you. I was thinking of taking picks of my place aswell. I only have vacuums I use at home, If I decide to change to a new one I take it back to my shop and swap it out. I do have a Few Vintage restorations going on in my garage at home but most of the work is done at my shop. They did try to make it out like my shop was a ware house I rented to "keep my Hoard" we had to close the outer doors of the shop over the shop ones, Move stuff around it was a bit irritating how they wanted it to be, The aim was to make you look like a mental nutcase I think. They wanted us to do the filming at my home They would move all the machines there at no cost to me But I said NO.
As I said Its not as bad as I though they had made it but I dont like some of the terms they have used, Or how they have used them

Hi Guido

Here are those Columbus's The concorde is the only one that has been restored and I use it weekly in our home in the stone flooring.

The other Three need major restoration but I just haven't had the chance to do them yet. Its taken me over a year and a half to complete and its still not done I just don't have the time I want to spend restoring them But that will be changing this year with the Hiring of some new employee's

oh what a marvel !

guido's profile picture
Garreth these are all wonderful machines ! All 4 are priceless ! If you have a buffering machine to make them shine like new, I think this will come out to be the "best restoration project of the year", as they really can become INCREDIBLE ! I have many Iron-made machines but unfortunately not yet a "buffering device" to make them shine again !
Hope to have one, someday !
Please make photos when you retore them, that would be great !
The foor-polisher is also very nice but it seems to be the one in the worst condition...the black rubber-bumper is clearly gone ( like it happened to many of my models : I have kept the old rubber-guards just because I'm planning to find spare-new ones someday ).
P.S.
The problem of RUBBER-BUMPERS is one of the things I am hoping to solve one day, as at least 30% of my vintage machines have severe damage on that part. Certain types of rubber can resist 100 years some others tend to crumble like biscuits...Actually I am keeping them - even those in very sorry conditions - just to have the exact shape to recreate them in the future, when it will be possible...

One really must be careful when dealing w/ the media. You NEVER know the "twists and turns" the story will take. And, Guido. beautiful machines.. collector too.

Hey Guido

That bumper is actialy material like felt. I have an amazing array of buffers and refurbishment machines. They actually filmed me using them. I will have these in great shape soon, I will post pics.

John

Nice to see you again sir

And Garreth,
I also am planning to find a small hand-held buffering machine, possibly NOT ROTO-ORBITAL ( cause I have tried and cannot control them ) in order to be able to make machines shine without dismantling them totally. I suppose the ones used by car-repair shops should fit. But first I will have to understand what pastes/products to use and other suitable products for this kind of job, as I don't want to make damages.
Few years ago I polished some machines very well using BRASSO polisher and 0000 iron-wool. The result was astonishing at the moment but the machines soon oxidated and - finally - some of them became even worse then before restoration, dark spots appearing eveywhere. So I suppose I will have to find out also a "finish product" which will avoid future oxidation on these alloy-aluminium leagues and will preserve the glittering shine for a reasonable time....

Sorry folks, but I had to delete the "Clash" video from my server. I got a notice from my web host that the monthly (February) bandwidth had ALREADY been exceeded and if it continued at that rate they would pull my web site. I checked the file stats and sure enough, it was this video getting all the hits -- almost 700 in one day.

That's why I had suggested people save the video to their computer instead of streaming it. And that's also why I had asked people not to forward the link all over the place.

Again, I'm sorry, but I can't jeopardize my web site (actually, a client's web site) because of excessive traffic to it.

Hey John
Thank you, Its what I really enjoy doing as far as the collecting goes, If I could make a decent living out of restoring Vintage vacuums, or even vintage appliances I would.
