I took my Hoover U4003 brush roll off today to change the belt which keeps snapping. Is there supposed to be a metal piece on both ends of the agitator? Mine has it only on one side. I do not have a book with it, so I am stumped.

Do you have a picture?

Do you mean the metal spring like mechanism on the end? I believe that is only on the one end.

You should have 2 metal screw on end caps, with a bearing, washer and clip on each end. For belts snapping I would check to see you're using Genuine Hoover Convertible/ Decade 48 belts otherwise known as 49258AG. Ensure brush roll rotates smoothly- no rubbing, no sticking. Motor pulley is tight. Possible replacement of belt pulley.

Could you

explain the purpose of that spring on one end? My Convertible has that exact same thing and I forgot to put it back on the last time I took the roller out.

I think it's just to make sure it's a snug fit in there. But perhaps someone else has a better answer!!

As far as I know . . .

. . . there should be a curved metal washer that is placed down in the center hole of each end cap. The bearing (if you have the original bearing) sits on top of that washer. The washer serves as that "spring" because there is a small triangular clip that holds the bearing in place.

Now,
It may be a good idea to replace the original bearings with new sealed bearings for smooth, quiet operation. Should you perform this procedure, you will not need a washer or a spring. Simply insert a sealed bearing on each side and thread on each end cap.

To be honest, the one and only downside I find about Hoover Convertibles is that the brushrolls can be frustrating to work on and need considerable attention and care.
