I tore apart my Classic III recently for some "inside" cleaning.

In other words, I've owned the vac for 7 months, and haven't taken it apart to clean the inside.

There was quite a bit of dust, and I'm pretty good at knowing a Kirby like the back of my left hand.

But... It's making a "noise." It sounds like a hard drive from the early 90's with the almost "scratching" but not scratching noise. I don't know how to describe it...

So here's a link to a video I made. I used the Crystalator to show that it's not my brushroll.

The carbon brushes are fine. Replaced within the last 5 or 6 years with minimum used. I didn't switch the carbon brushes around or rotate them or anything. Basically, I did a normal check like I do on all my Kirby's.

I didn't take apart the motor. I just used my rainbow duster attachment to clean the inside. Didn't know I could harm anything like that.

Will,

Maybe it is one or both motor bearings (front and/or rear).

It just doesn't make sense. It was fine a month ago.

Like Ben says could be either Bearing more than likely it will be, but just check to rule out the possibility of the fan being slightly loose I had it once where id replaced the fan but a month later it came slightly loose made a similar noise to the one your getting. Also this is doubtful but check your motor fan, is that loose or even if once of the fins is slightly bent and rubbing on the field housing iv had this also lol, if these are eliminated as a possible cause then you know its probably a bearing.

*sigh*

Hopefully, if it is one of the bearings, it's the front bearing. I have the tools to replace the front bearing. I don't have the tools to press a back bearing on.

I'll rule these out sometime. Unfortunately, my Sentria and Sentria II both need servicing, so this Kirby is pretty low on my list.

Just listening again and to me at about 49-50 seconds the noise or as I call it the waft seems to pick up a bit don't know if anyone else can hear it, so I wonder if the fan impeller is spinning.
I know sometimes when you turn a Kirby on the pitch can alter at first usually as the bag inflates and you get proper air flow after it's been sitting idle, but in this case the bag had been inflated in the first run all as you did was swap the front attachment.

I don't think it sounds that bad- maybe bearings starting to get tired?

I know everybody's different, but the noise would do my head in if I was using it lol, I would have to investigate and sort it just in case it was a small problem, which could potentially turn into a major problem.

My Sentria needs a new impeller and SEVERE cleaning. It's an 06 machine.

As for my Sentria II, it just needs a new brushroll and cleaning.

I'll check my Classic III soon, hopefully I can fix this problem easily.

Will,

I say this Kirby does not sound too weird to my ears either, Crystalator or the nozzle.

Hmm, I'm starting to think that I may as well not worry about it.

The bearings were replaced 2 years ago... I found out by looking on the inside of the housing. Someone wrote on it that the bearings were changed.

I guess there's nothing to worry about. It's not like this is a vacuum I use constantly either.
