I've seen a lot of posts on swivel tops but have not seen a lot of pics of this particular model which I own. It is different in that the power switch is the round button above the blower port. Is it more rare than the others? Can anyone tell me its approximate year of manufacture? How many different models of swivel tops did GE make? Although the hose in the pic was original and looks great, it leaked like a sieve and practically made the vac useless to use so I put on a new 7 foot hose and wow what a difference! I've started using the vac on a daily basis for cleaning up around the cat litter boxes and in the utility room. The carpet nozzle works pretty well for cleaning cat hair. Why did GE make the wands larger in diameter than other makes such as Eureka, Lux, etc.? I also have the original instruction manual.

Thanks,
Gary

I agree with you about the carpet nozzle. I have had a different model Swivel-top for a long time but hardly ever used it because it felt to me like it didn't have much suction. But after using it for a couple of weeks as a "daily driver," I discovered that what it DOES have is very good air flow and a very well designed rug nozzle. In particular, I couldn't believe how much pet hair that it groomed out of the large oriental rug in the living room!

Except mine has a blown motor!

Those were around in the late 60s, early-to-mid 70s I believe.

Don't you just love that nozzle? I have another in mint green running, And it's amazing at cleaning!

Nice vac!I think this is closer to about 1964 and the only one with this switch.Does seem rare probably because of limited time of production(maybe 2-3 years at most)and it was a more expensive deluxe model when many would buy the cheaper standard version(both good quality).Very long life vac with one of few problems being worn or leaking hose as you found out.

The only thing I don't like about the vac is the ease of mobility. The front swivel caster seems to bind sometimes. If the vac is not pulled directly from the front, then it tends to want to tip over since it only has 3 casters.

Introduced in

1963, I have one with the little GE hangtag saying the guarantee is in effect from 1963- , they used this rug tool for their top of the line machines until 1972 when GE quit making cleaners, It is in my book one of the very best straight suction nozzles ever, it draws air in from the slots in the top down by the brushes creating a jet effect.. similar to zwhat Rainbow did with their rug tool, the GE has much more power than the Rainbow so it really performs well, GEs locking wands were introduced on their last tank type cleaner in 1951, the square one that Fred S has, when the first canister came out in 52, those attachments were carried over,,model AVC-815.

"caster seems to bind"

This can sometimes be greatly improved with a drop (not a spoonful!) of oil above and below shaft it swivels on.

Under the front desk!

At our Kirby factory distributorship we kept a GE swivel top under the counter and one in the work bench area. Ran both of those all day every day cleaning in and around our Kirby repairs. So much air movement even on a full tank, and easily cleanable. Love the old GE!
