The two speed switch has four color wires (red, white, blue, yellow). The motor has five wires (red, white, blue, yellow and black). The switch has two black wires. The cord has one black and one white wire. If you have a power nozzle receptacle, it also has two black wires.

First, join the white 2 speed switch wire to the white motor wire.
Second, join the blue 2 speed switch wire to the blue motor wire.
Third, join the yellow two speed switch wire to the yellow motor wire.
Forth, join the red 2 speed switch wire to the red motor and the white cord wire. (if you have a power nozzle receptacle, join one black wire to the above).
Fifth, join the black motor wire to the black switch wire
(if you have a power nozzle receptacle, join the remaining black wire to the above)
Six, join the remaining black switch wire to the remaining black cord wire.

That's it.

If you have a power nozzle receptacle, three of your wire connectors are larger than the other. The smaller wire connectors are used with the 2 wire connection, the larger connectors are used with the connections of 3 or more wires. The largest wire connector (wire nut) is used with the Forth connection.

For any single speed vacuum, the connections are as follows:
One cord wire to one switch wire
One motor wire to one switch wire
One motor wire to one cord wire

I had my sisters model 33 apart for a dual bearing change and took this photo of the wiring at the time. I hope it helps.

The wiring in the photo above matches Tom's instructions nicely.

Thank you! 28 years of standing behind a work bench fixing vacuums must have counted for at least something (lol).

WOW THANKS!

I had my L31X apart thinking I would harvest parts, but I got so interested, tinkered with it and decided to put the motor and switches back together. Just want to see if I "fixed" it. I took cell phone pictures, marked some wires, when I was ready to wire up, my pictures were not the best...confusion.

Googled the question and this popped up. Was exactly what I needed. Copied and pasted the instructions to notepad, saved and printed it out.

If the motor passes muster, I will file the sheet under Filter Queen.

Thanks to all members for sharing.

If Tom

Or Clay Floyd tells you how to fix something, you can COUNT on it!

That's one of the main things I like about my FQ. It may not be my favorite vac but the wiring is dead simple with not a circuit board (aka self-destruct mechanism) in sight. Even better, all connections are made with conventional wire nuts. The bottom line is it's actually designed to be worked on.
