I Cannot speak for the Riccar but have only heard good things. I have a Miele cat&dog, Its ok but heavy to use, Its got very good suction and the brush roll is very good at removing pethair but the turbine nozzle for upholstery is useless.I have 10 cats , 3 dogs and the bags fill up way faster than Miele says they will( its was one of 3 vacuum used in the house.) I gave it to my Mom who at first like it as it was so quiet. She also started to find it to heavy.
The biggest bugbear with it was the bag, It has never since new sealed properly meaning the bag compartment is always full of fine dust on the inside walls. It also means the Charcoal filter gets clogged and needs replacement ( expensive ). We also found the machine started to smell after a while, about 3-4 days after a new bag was fitted. I made a post on here about it and others expressed the same view. Its not a bad machine but it has its faults. Like every vacuum out there. |

Isn't the initial price of the cleaner. It's the cost to maintain it. The Miele's bags are VERY expensive (five dollars each). You cannot replace just the cord if you run over it, you MUST replace the entire handle assembly ($125). When the Miele's brush roller bristles wear out (about five years) you must replace the entire brush bar (well over $100).
The Riccar is made in the USA, the bags are inexpensive (we sell them for less than $2 for the HEPA bags). Every part is replaceable without having to buy the 'assembly'. Both machines use a turbo brush for the pet hair, the Riccar's turbo brush is much less expensive. It's ironic that Miele in Europe is LESS expensive than Dyson - but in America the Miele is positioned as "the BMW of vacuums" and everything is very expensive. Add up the cost to maintain the two machines, and the Riccar comes out the winner each time. If you want a better machine than the Vibrance, check out the Riccar model 8955. |

If money was no object and based on the space of your home with your requirements, the SEBO D4 Premium would be a good bet if you want a canister. The PN alone would be able to be used on both hard floors and carpets and the long cord on this canister is a benefit - far more length than a Miele S8 canister vacuum. You also get more dust bags with SEBO in one of their packs compared to Miele.
I know you mentioned upright but the SEBO Felix has a smaller dust bag than the D series canisters. |

Riccar or Simplicity all the way. I recommend a canister style machine. They come with a wide array of attachments and have a long telescoping wand with bare floor brush that will leave your hardwood floors gleaming!! Very powerful, easy to use systems.
Mieles are good but very expensive. My experience with Sebo has not been positive. I find the power and cleaning performance of a Riccar or Simplicity or even Hoover Windtunnel canister to be significantly better over Sebo D4. Sebo filtration and build quality is great though.
