What is your favorite Dyson?

I liked my DC23 canister. It had a lot of suction and I liked the Dyson designed tools. My favorites were the tool used for the hard surface floors and the brush designed to be used for dusting blinds.
No trouble selling my Dysons when I sold off my collection, they went fast.

I like my DC17. My experience with Dyson's is limited though, so I haven't gotten to try out all the models. That thing picks up insanely well though.

The DC04 has to be my favorite.

Ditto Joe - DC04 was the best vacuum they ever made! Relatively sturdy (certainly more so than anything that came after it), very strong suction and decent pick up, even on the clutched models. They were far lass bulky and awkward to use than the DC07 and DC14 that followed and far more sturdy than the current models.

The DC41 is probably the best I've used for carpet pick up, but I'm not a huge fan of "The Ball" and find them to be very flimsy, especially considering they're almost £400 new.

The worst has to be either the DC02 or DC03. Both were a complete joke in terms of performance.

Pic below of the DC04 Absolute that I used have. Sold this one on a while ago.

PS The DC03 is worser than the DC02, I found the DC02 to be Okay, but not good and atleast the DC02 is better made than the Dc03

Why hate Dyson Jamie? They are decent vacuums, They are powerful, have the best suction, and are good at filtering, and also are quiet, well depends on the model, just try a DC14 or DC15, or better, a /DC25, and you will like Dyson, be honest, you liked your Dc04 but started bashing Dyson when you sold it, they are decent vacuums, better than any VAX or whatever, I know they are not the best, but if you hate Dyson, then you might as well hate any bagless vacuum made

Sorry Tayyab, but your posts do make me laugh!

Say what you like about Dyson - love em or hate em, but they are NONE of what you said. They don't have "the best" suction, they aren't that good at filtering and they are CERTAINLY not quiet by ANY standards.

I'd love to know what actual experience you have to be able to say that you know they are the best. Personally, having used almost, if not every, model of Dyson going at one time or other and owning an absolute heap of vacuums since I started collecting, I've found that they are indeed the best bagless vacuum going. However, Dyson have spent far too much time thinking about marketing gimmicks and attempting to refine the cyclone assembly and have completely missed other features that make a good vacuum, such as build quality, brushroll design, ease of use, easy to use and access tools. I don't want to have to stop vacuuming and take half the cleaner apart to get to the hose, just to pick some crumbs up from the corner or dust off the skirting board. I also want to be able to vacuum under my bed without moving it.

They have strong suction and in many aspects are very well designed, but they are let down by poorly engineered brushrolls, poor tools and a poor build quality that doesn't reflect the high price of the machine and always have.

I agree with you, mostly, I think the hose and tools are quick and easy to use, the tools are quite well designed, but they need to improve the ferformance of them cause there are many older cleaners and many new cleaners that pick up better, they need to make a brushroll that has stiff brushes that are close togther, and to do away with the tracks in the sole plate because it causes you to have to make more passes where dirt is left behind.

Dysons are sealed systems and do have excellent filtration...Untill you empty them!! The suction is Excellent, but I think the Vax cleners, which are the majour bagless uright competitor perfom, A LOT better and are cheaper, however, they don't have the same bagless technology, if the VAX Mach Series Brushroll was put in a Dyson, they would probably be MUCH better!

I disagree, Alex. Especially on cleaners like the DC07, it was particularly notable that fine dust was escaping around the gaskets on the airways. If you leave it for long enough, you'll notice. It's different from model to model though, the 07 and 14 were the worst ones I noticed for it.

In the USA, the DC17 would have to be our 'best' model. It was designed specially for our carpets, with a really good brush roller (far better than the 'hairy stick' he used on the DC07). The DC17 is, in my opinion, the deepest cleaning Dyson upright next to the DC28. Sure hope Dyson gives us a good electric power nozzle for the DC54 - the turbine heads are horrible on U.S. carpets.

We have a DC14 at home. My wife has tried all the Dysons in our shop and she preferred the DC14.

There is nothing it doesn't do well. Kinda like when Volvo got to the 940 range. There was nowhere else to go so they had to start building in obsolescence thereafter in order to sell new models.

Sorry Tayyab, but...

Although I love Dyson (being my fav brand of vacuum and taking up most of my collection), but there are other brands which are just as good as Dyson. Such as Electrolux. My Turbo 2 Super has a lot better brushroll than most of the Dysons' I have. It's also a lot quieter, and a lot lighter than my Dysons!

There are some Dysons with decent brushrolls in them, such as the Origin models. And the DC25. Yes, they have great suction, but suction isn't everything. In a vacuum (uprights especially) you need a balance of good suction and a good agitating brushroll.

The moral of the story is to conclude the 'best' you need to use several other types of vacuums in order to come to the conclusions.

In terms of my favourite Dyson, then that's my DC14 Animal.

Anyway, that's enough from me...

In terms of general daily use then my favourite is the DC14, and I completely agree with MVacs 940 comment (I need to scratch my Volvo itch!)

However, the DC24 is great in terms of its quirkiness! Hopefully after a refurb it will perform on par too

Mine would have to be the DC17. Like dysonman1 said its the best for deep cleaning carpets because of the big brush roll with stiff bristles and separate motor to power the brush.

My DC38 for hard floors its great, very light and follows behind me and does not get stuck on furniture and after it fits in the tiniest cupboard out of the way till next time lol

I agree ManchesterVacs, I use a DC14 Blitz it daily. I purchased it £16 off eBay, blown motor, one new motor later, and a wuick clean up, I had an almost fully working Dyson :) I'm surprised at how well it copes in our house, 3 kids, 1 baby, 1 teenager, 6 Adults urgets used 2 or 3 times a day, every day and it still works wonders with a broken bin flap, and a worn out brushbar/clutch :)

Tayyab, the fact that it has a broken bin flap and a worn out clutch and brushroll in a relatively short lifespan (lets not forget the Blitz It was one of the last DC14's) says more about the cleaner than any of your praise.

Just to put in perspective, we had 1 cleaner in daily use in a house with 4 kids, 4 cats and 2 adults for 17 years with flawless performance. The only repair it ever had, was a belt replacement. That particular cleaner is still running and is now part of my collection.

My Grandma has 2 dogs. She vacuums daily, sometimes twice. She had 1 cleaner from 1986 - 1997. Despite it being rather battered by the time it was replaced and suffering with broken height adjustment, handle release and broken top cord hook, it still worked after 11 years of twice daily use AND cleaned 2 cars fairly regularly. Since then, she has had 5 Dysons (DC01 standard, DC04 Silver Lime, DC07 Animal, DC15 Animal and a DC27 Animal). None have lasted longer than a few years.

After all that, I think I'll stick with the Sebo.

I think your Grandma would be best with the DC04 constant max if she likes bagless, its durable, long lasting and powerful, Just a filter wash every 6 months and a new belt once a year should keep it running, and is really needed, a new brushbar every few years or 2 years wouldnt hurt :)

Post# 253600 , Reply# 32   10/23/2013 at 08:05 (3,834 days old) by Turbo500 (West Yorkshire, UK)

turbo500's profile picture
Tayyab, the constant max is just a DC04 silverlime with a lower wattage motor and a changable cable. The DC04 that she had lasted the longest - she had that for about 5 years. But despite regular maintenance, it still wore out. I believe the motor burnt out on that one.

Plus, the constant max is no longer in production.

My Grandma has now got a George which is used mostly. The DC27 has been relegated for use upstairs now.

First, I have to add my Fantom Thunder; while not technically a 'Dyson', from looking at the early Dyson versions it's quite clear of the sibling link between them all. Fantom introduced me to Dyson's designs, and while it may not have the suction that the newer ones do, the way that the hepa filter stays so clean and all the dust in the dust cup indicates how well the original designs really work; I've only replaced the hepa filter once and it probably really didnt need it. Next would be my dc44, the one I use most; I just pull it out of it's hanger, touch up around my bird cages and put it back, wonderful lightweight design. Last but not least would be the dc17, yes the one with the 'design flaw'. But Dyson addressed that, and it now works like a champ. The Thunder's lasted 15 years now, and shows no signs of giving up. Now that it has 'company', my vacuum society will give each other a breather and I hope they'll last forever, never to buy another vacuum bag.
