That is a beauty for only $10.00. Can't wait for pics, congratulations!

She said it was her first vacuum, but that she had to get a different one after she got a dog.

I can't imagine what she's going to replace a good Hoover with. What do they make now that will pick up dog hair?

Dyson?

I don't know, I think I will ask her what she bought. Maybe a Dyson? My cousin has a Dyson for pet hair and raves over it.

I thought of that too. I guess that would be a logical choice.

Hey I have one of those! Same color even. I got mine about a year ago at a thrift store. It ran great in the store. then I got it home I found the cracks in the base where the brushroll slides in. I stuffed a ruber band next to the brushroll to keep the bearing plates from turning. Maybe I'll transplant a metal base someday.
I hope you have good luck with yours. Right now mine is the loan out machine if someone needs to borrow a vacuum.

...'vacume'

Glad you posted this... I've only been searching Craigslist for 'vacuum', completely forgot it's a commonly misspelled word.

Quick search using "vacume" and "vacum" turned up a handful of vacs that wouldn't be found under the correct spelling

Nice find Debbie!

I have the exact same vacuum and I love mine. I think that will treat you well.

Enjoy!

Stephen

P.S. the lady you are getting this vacuum from said that she needed a vacuum to remove dog hair???? I always felt that Convertibles were pretty good at removing dog hair. Oh well...that's just my opinion. IBAISAIC!

Well they're not very good at removing dog hair from stairs and furniture. Still, let her think she's done the right thing or else she may just want to keep it.. LOL You can snicker at her folly once you have the Hoover in your hand and your back turned LOL

Picked up the vacuum this morning and found out what she purchased to replace it.

I asked her if it was a Dyson, and she gave me a look that said, "I wish, if only I didn't have to take out a small mortgage for one." She said to me, "OH something with a HEPA Filter, it's so neat you can see all the stuff in there swirling around, I think it is a Bissell."

So there you have it folks! A Bissell replaced the trusty Hoover.

I found your Hoover at the St. Lucie West Goodwill for $9.99, but left it behind because it has duct tape where the handle meets the "yoke" that attatches to the maroon part. I might get it anyway. It's pretty like yours. Pics!

Alan, you should get it, it probably only needs a bolt or something simple like that. Maybe there is nothing wrong at all, I have gotten things with duct tape on them only to pull it off and find the item fine underneath. Some people like to reinforce stuff with duct tape.

I will try to get that today, it stayed in the store for over a week, it should still be there. I can get the parts it needs from someone here, the vacuum shops in the area don't handle any thing over ten years.

I did what you told me. I bought this clone of your new vacuum for $10.64 from the St. Lucie West Goodwill, and here's what I got: Hmmm......what's under the duct tape?

Oh great--black electrical tape. I think I need a nut and bolt. Or maybe I'll spray it down with cream Krylon. Goo Gone put a nice lustre on my plastic. This is my second Convertible, and the first with a headlight. I ripped a dime sized patch of dark maroon bag paint off with some of that accursed duct tape. Hate that crap. Debbie, I won't ruin your Convertible debut with any more pictures. I don't want to steal your thunder. Happy vacuuming!

Alan,

Great find! I am so happy you went back and purchased it. Keep on posting pictures, I am dying to see what exactly is hiding under the tape. I am not ready to post any pictures yet. Mine is still in the back of my car. It has been pouring rain the past two days, so I didn't feel like bringing it up yet.

I read you loud and clear. I would wait too. There is something holding my handle on besides the tape. I don't have the nerve to take it off yet. But I'll keep you posted. Good luck with the weather.

Can't wait to find out what is holding that handle together. This should be very interesting.

Here is my U4387 Hoover Convertible. It belonged to my grandmother. I have the instruction book where she wrote the date when she bought it. She bought it at Marshall's Dept. Store, Barberton, OH on November 6, 1984. You see grandma saved everything. She bought it in the vacuum dept. where all of the machines were put together for you as well as serviced for you later on. The man even put it in the car for her. Keep in mind that the vacuum dept. was in the basement with the other appliances. Too bad that the store went out of business in 1989. Grandma's house where my parents currently live is only about 1,000 sq. feet. She kept things very neat and rarely used this model. I bought her a new Soft and Light in January 2001 to replace it as it was too heavy for her. She went to a nursing home in November that same year and died in June of '02. When my mom cleaned out the house, she gave me the vacuum with the tools. She traded her Marine Blue Hoover Convertible model 1070 for this one. I was very disappointed when I saw the new maroon one as it had squared off corners unlike her all metal Convertible. However, she kept the still working all original model 62 in the basement. That one was more fun to play with anyway!

Here is a close up of the machine and the instruction booklet. You cannot see the writing which is in pencil. It says "Bought 11-6-84 at Marshall's - Joe Hollaran"
