When I first cleaned it out, the bag was packed, and the Mini-Emtor had baby powder, sheetrock dust and a bunch of fishing weights. I gave it the spa treatment, but I could not get rid of the rancid smell. I took the bag off, washed it in the bathtub with All, very vigorously, and it still reeks. I can't afford a new bag, so I am at a loss. I even sprayed it with Febreeze - no good. I can't use it at the moment because it would stink up the whole house if I did.

Two tips you can try...

Tip # 1.....stuff the bag with crumpled up newspaper for several days...

and/or

Tip #2......Using REAL vanilla extract...place a cotton ball on top of the bottle and invert it letting the cotton ball absorb a good amount of the extract. Place cotton ball in the bottom of the bag and zip it closed for several days.

My mom said something about washing the bag in vinegar? BTW, it has a high airflow white bag installed. I'll definitely try the vanilla trick.

Another thing you can try is to take the bag off of the mini-emptor and then run a bunch of water through the hose that leads from the mini-emptor to the bag. You don't want the bag attached to do this. If your shower head can come down and has multiple settings, put it on the most vigorous setting you can.

When I first got my Kirby Sentria it had been used as a "cat litter hoover" so as you can imagine, it reeked of cat crap. The only thing to get it clean was to do what I posted above.

After you do that, do the vanilla cotton ball. It should make your Kirby smell new.

I figured out what the smell is...

MOTH BALLS! My aunt didn't tell me she put moth balls in the bag to "kill fleas." How do I rid the bag of the horrendous smell of MOTH BALLS?

Do you have a washing machine or a laundromat near you?

If you do, take the outer bag off, flip it inside out, and wash it on the coldest setting.

While it's doing that, grab the mini-emptor and bag tube and hose the inside out...

Or, better yet, if you have a detachable shower head with a massage setting on it, turn it to that, put it up to the mini-emptor and flush the bag-tube out. Then, pour some dish soap down, let it foam up inside, and flush it out again. This can be done with a hose easily if you have a hose head with settings on it.

Re-assemble everything.

If it still smells, then I'm out of ideas, I did the above with my Sentria which had been used to clean up cat crap and it smells nice now.

OMG I hate the smell of moth balls!!!

UGH.

After you clean it up as best you can, try this stuff

Baking soda or activated carbon might work. Both remove odors to some extent. Activated carbon (charcoal) ADsorbs odors. yes, that's adsorb and not absorb.

My Mother just bought a new Kirby today so I thought I'd come over here and snoop around a little. I'm from the other side, as some of you will know.

Mark- I don't know if you know it or not, but Odors Away smells just like Kirby Odorific used to smell. I ran across it a few years ago and was supprized and pleased when I opened the bottle.

Will soaking a cotton ball with Rainbow "fresh air" work?
