I don't know if it's just because I like old vacuum cleaners, but I keep finding them in books I read to my kids. It seems that a lot of illustrators have an eye for vacuums. Here's an example: |

One of the earliest paperback Peanuts comic books had a strip that ended with an image of Linus pushing an upright vacuum cleaner. I remember this so vividly, because it kind of unfortunately taught me that I should be embarassed about liking to play with vacuum cleaners. I think the short strip has his older sister Sally saying: "some little brothers like to play baseball, some little brothers like to play with cars, but my little brother likes to play with vacuum cleaners...oh brother!"
Would be wonderful if someone could find this strip and post it!!! |

I remember THIS book in particular as it was the ONLY kids book in my schools library having to do with vacuum cleaners. Apparently it was written in 1979 by Gunilla Wolde and there are some available, but are quite pricey.
The general gist is that Betsey used an amorphous Electrolux to do things, or possibly suck up things around the house. Remember I haven't seen this book in nearly 40 years. So I am going on limited memory. I checked it out so much, that no one else did in the period from 1982-1985 I had the whole card inside the cover filled in with my initials, and the dates. The Librarian would just raiser her eyebrow, and sigh. And on occasion say something like: "you know. we DO have OTHER books to check out". |
