Has anyone familiar with replacing gaskets on models 562 through G4 ever known how to install a new O-ring gasket (122068)?

My dad recently did so on my Classic III 2CB. However, my concerns are these:

1 - after successful installation of the new gasket, do you really have to wait at least 24 hours from the time of the installation before next use of the vacuum?

2 - while allowing the sealant for the gasket to cure, should I have the rug nozzle or hose installed on it to hold the newly-installed gasket for the 24-hour-long duration?

Hi Ben, When I had my store and fan case gaskets got replaced on 50% of the Kirby's that came in, i used to remove the old gasket, then clean the residue off with lacquer thinner, I used to apply a thin film of brown Kirby sealer, I think if memory serves me correct part # T105 or T110, it was a brown, highly flammable rubber cement, they discontinued it,it was made for them by 3M, well anyway, I used to apply a thin film to the new flat side of the O ring, put it n position and then I used to coat the edge of an old 518 style hose coupler with grease or Vaseline then put it on the machine to apply pressure to the new O ring, I let it sit a few hors, removed it, cleaned the residual grease of and it was ready to use. Hope this helps.

Charlie,

It was #T106 that you refer to as the plastic sealer Kirby had used.

Anyway, today I just ran my Classic III, and with the hose on it, I finally got it to run fast again. The new fan case gasket obviously makes a better seal than a worn out one in this case. But I remain concerned about premature gasket wear so soon.

Ben, No the T106 was the plastic sealer that you put between the fan case and the motor housing, the glue I was referring to was a brown rubber cement, that was used to glue the O rings on the fan case, the O ring on the Sani Emptor and also was used to glue the rug plate gaskets on. If you have an old Kirby part order sheet it is on there.

Charlie,

What rubber cement do you use currently when installing new O-ring gaskets on G4 and older Kirbys? I know some repairmen use 3M's plastic and emblem adhesive.

Charlie....by any chance, are you referring to a special type of brown rubber cement called Pliobond? That's what our former vac shop used for Kirby seals & anything in which a foam or rubber seal had to be attached. Worked great, I actually use it myself now as it can be obtained easily in most hardware stores.

The brown rubber cement came in a tube it was highly flammable and I remember if you gave the tube a squeeze is kept coming out, so you just had to gently dab it, ironically now that I closed my store after 30 years I work for Whirlpool home appliances and we use the identical glue to glue the felt seals on the dryer drums, there is no name on the tube just that it is from Whirlpool, if anyone would like one when I get an extra one I will send it to you, this works great. Pliobond also works well, I used it at my store after we could no longer got the brown glue from Kirby, but this Whirlpool stuff is identical.
