I was using my Dyson today when I had an urge to switch to my Kirby 560. I was surprised how much more I enjoined vacuuming with the 560 over the new Dyson. Like driving a Carolla all day then going for a twilight drive in a Shelby Cobra. When I use the Dyson I am simply vacuuming. When I use the Kirby I'm using a time machine.

Wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Cheers!

Joe

Vintage vs new

I can certainly relate to what you're saying when it comes to using old vacuums or new ones. I have a Hoover bagless upright that I use on the rare occasion, but when I do, it's boring, mundane housework. On the other hand, when I pull out my Electrolux Super J or Olympia One, I am magically transported back to when I was a kid and so excited to get to help my mom run the sweeper. I think it's the nostalgia of using an older vacuum that makes them so special, for me that had a big hand in me even starting collecting in the first place!

Works here also, I have a dc18 daily I use because I can move it around easily and works for that purpose, not as easy to get around for me anymore. If I want to have an experience and enjoy it, out comes the Silverado. That will take me hours though.

So true I love to use my old 511 Kirby reminds me of how Mom would get after me to vacuum before the company came some 55 or 60 years ago Doug

I do this! As good as my Miele S5 works, I get more enjoyment using a turbopower, or the 119. My baby daughter likes the junior more too!

I mostly tend to agree. The new vacuums I tend to like are those whose design hasn't changed much from their classic roots - like Filter Queen, Silver King, Kirby or Royal (the all-metal uprights).

I want to like more modern, "newfangled" machines like Dysons, Fantoms, or even Simplicity or the like, but they just don't have the panache of the older, but ahead-of-their-time vacuums. Not that the well-made new machines are bad, mind, they just somehow lack something.

They Lack

STYLE and METAL!, just like all the new appliances, all stoves and fridges look the same, it used to be a Frigidaire was totally different from a Norge and it was nothing like a Westinghouse..ETC.

sorry to say for me its the same thing in the kitchen with the cookware, love my old and heavy Le Creuset and All Clad, but there are days they are just too heavy for me.I have to work with what I can do anymore.

The new ones do lack something. Soul.. as if a vacuum can have such a thing. But every time I grab my 560 I feel just as I did in the early 80's when I first found my grandmoms. It was just so cool! Still is.. in fact I think its gotten cooler with age.
