I love seeing all the foreign made machines that get posted on here, about the only thing ive ever found is a gs-80 and gs-90 Nilfisk and a few Canadian machines,I would put in a 220 volt outlet if one of these ever turned up.

Im glad Numatic haven't gone to town to personalise any more of their tub vacs. Can you imagine what people would do if a drawing of a backside was put round the back?? Mind you, I could see the fun in being able to custom build you Henry with a furry tail lol Or those battery pack light chains to add a bit of flashing colour any time Henry is switched on.

Just had another thought - if Viking horns could be put on the top, you could just slide the tools on!

It has been said that in the event of a nuclear explosion, only cockroaches will survive. I would add Numatic Henry cleaners to that too. I saw on this forum that someone asked if they were merely an expensive shop-vac. They are not. Henry is a top-quality canister cleaner, with lots of useful suction, top-quality tool kit, larger paper bag, very long lead, and a relatively low price tag. They are around half the price of a Dyson, and as the years have progressed sales have boomed, meaning more and more high-street retailers and supermarkets are now selling them (at one time it was solely independent retailers and janitorial houses who sold them) and in turn so sales boomed further.

The fact of the matter is that everyone in the UK knows who Henry is, and he makes few promises, but lives up to those which he makes. A good deal of UK consumers have tried many bagless cleaners and have been disappointing; although very basic and cheap to buy, Henry does manage to quench that thirst for those who just want a high-quality no-nonsense suction cleaner. Under normal use in a domestic setting, a Henry could literally last someones lifetime.

Henry

At risk of hijacking a 'Vintage' thread.......

All I can say (regarding longevity) is that the 'Henry' featured in my photographs was purchased (used) by my mother at the beginning of 1992. It has outlasted her, and is still going strong, though it is not my 'daily drive' now.

I am somewhat mystified by the references to 'bags'... Whilst I have seen a bag in a 'Henry' in a commercial setting, my mother's has a large fine-mesh 'screen' filter, which is all that it has ever used. When everything is 'clean' the suction is phenomenal.....

All best

Dave T

Bags

All Henry cleaners can be used without a dustbag, and commercially I expect a good deal are. However, it is arguably much more convenient to use a bag.

VR - also in support of Henry - the vacuums can take a lot of abuse. This isn't a vac that is made to be coo'd after, or treated with kid gloves. The bonus with Henry is that although he already has a long cord, the boy is well endowed with a long hose - so you're really pulling just the hose for more access half the time than shifting the tub around.

A fleece washable cloth dust bag is also available. I've used it and it isn't as messy to empty as bagless only with Henry - dump the dust and throw the caked fleece bag in the washing machine. Simples!

Hey Dave:

Interesting - I havn't seen very many of those under the National name that I can remember. I know they were made in Scotland by Vactric - I have one in my collection that was sold in Canada by the State Vacuum Stores under the name President. (Says made by Vactric Ltd, Lanarkshire, Scotland on the name plate). Wasn't National one of the electric board's house brands over there?

Was indeed a local Electricity Board model made by Vactric, very popular cleaner of the era, solid and heavy, the hose has one of the most heavy screw-in adaptors out there...sold with an array of accessories - even the ubiquitous moth ball crystalizor..

Heres one of the older models from the 50`s, always supplied in a wooden box, compartments for all the accessories...surprisingly the braid cable is usable, and the little details and instructions printed on the box..it has lovely chrome ends and a "Snakeskin" effect on the body..

General reply

Collector2/ChesterMike.. Mine says 'National Utilities, Manchester, England'.. But, of course, that may mean nothing (it says 'Oxo' on the sides of 'buses, but they don't sell them.. ;) ).

Mike... Does the mains lead unplug from that 'Dudley Junior'??? It looks as close as anything that I've seen to the first vacuum cleaner that I remember from my childhood.. Including dark casework and chromed ends, but I seem to remember that the mains lead plugged into ours.

All best

Dave T

P.S. I have a spare motor for the 'National'..... And possibly a hose in very poor conditon, but with good ends....

It may say National on the label, but they WERE manufactured by Vactric in Scotland - they are absolutely identical to the Vactric machines apart from the body finish and the floor nozzle - Mike's picture above shows both types - the metal one is the Vactric the one on the wand is the National style. I think they were also sold as Viscounts as well.

It always amazes me how many of these national turn up on Ebay for, at least in the Vactric version, they were by no means cheap.

I have only seen one other National cleaner and that is a tub style, based on an Apex (US) design I think so probably manufactured by Bylock

If you look very carefully at the blower end of the Dudley you will see the cable receptacle on the top

Hi Dave , heres another pic, the mains adaptor plugs into the top of the vac chrome end, large black right angled plug like you get on the coffee percolators, does it look familiar, cant find a pic of the plug at mo..

Dudley Junior

Thanks for the info/pics Vacbear/ChesterMike.... Still can't be sure, but certainly looks very much like it (as 40 year old memories go) :-(

I have a small, round, wooden bodied brush somewhere, but that wasn't from my mother's cleaner, it was from an old cleaner from a G.P.O. Telephone Exchange, and IIRC, just has the Govt. 'arrow/crowfoot' and a 'type' number. I'll post a picture, as and when I next come across it... ;)

Vintage accessory

My memory was 'jogged' somewhat by the picture of the 'accessories box' in Reply#20, and I had a look around.... I have a 'spraygun' accessory, similar to the one in the bottom of the box shown in that picture, but it is branded 'Electrolux'. It appears to be complete, and I am open to offers for it...

All best

Dave T

P.S. My floor brush has the wooden back.

Weird coincidence

This afternoon, while 'channel surfing' at my Good Lady's house, I spotted a modern copy of this type of spraygun on one of the 'shopping channels' being used with it's 'pump' (a vacuum cleaner motor arranged to blow) to spray a fence panel... What an amazing new invention!!! I think I'll have to rush out and spend £70 ($100) on one...... ;-)

All best
