I have to clean the bumper and polish it.I never understood why the had a rubber bumper on the first tools, and then took it off for all the later ones??

Just a thought...

The Compact was designed to clean airplanes,so it was specifically designed for flat carpet, hence the lack of a brush, the later Compact rug tools were designed for any type rug, so they had a brush and a flip over port for stubborn lint etc, this is what I have figured out, Tom or Tania, you all are the compact experts, any comment??

When the first Compacts were demonstrated in the home (1947), they would have had a very hard time with threads, pet hair, etc. Adding to the fact that no one had ever heard of this brand of vacuum before, I'm sure the sales department pushed for something better. Remember, they were going up against model 12 and model 30 Luxes every day. Both could easily pick up clinging lint and hair with their flip over suction ports. I believe that the first rug tool was just slightly adapted from Universal's, which was actually used on their straight suction uprights as well. Just a thought though, I don't know that for sure.

Many people don't know that the first C-2 models were all aluminum (as were all C-1's) - very heavy compared to the Magnalite they began using soon after the C-2's launch. The first C-2's had a flange with two little arms that went into the exhaust port to deflect the air stream upward. Don't know why they did away with that so early in the C-2's production run.
