I recently got an oreck commercial the people said it needed a new brushroll so i got it and looked it and the bristles were worn down to the wood, has anyone ever seen this before?

Not on an oreck but often on entry level Eureka's. I think its from using them with the brush running on tiles and stone flooring, also possibly on hard industrial carpet.

used to get vac in the shop like this all the time lots of hoover juniors they would be down to the plastic holders of course they would still pick up reasonably well with worn out brushes probably because the beater bars were still doing there thing

Vacuum manufacturers should color their brushroll bristles to show when the brushroll needs to be replaced.

I saw one on a basic Oreck in a pawn shop that had all of it's bristles completely worn it was a pretty shocking site and left me wondering what they did to it

Vorwerk brush rollers have indicator bristles for exactly that purpose. Note in the pic below the shorter tufts of red bristles at the end of the roller. Once the black bristles have worn down to the same length, you know it's time to swap them for a new pair.

Not so common on the Radiance, but common on a lot of other vacs.. Heres a rare radiance one.

I think German Vacuums are top notch. I love Sebo. I want one of those weird shaped Airbelts something 4. I would love to find a Vorwerk. They make a neat canister too. Viel Besser Staubsauger

 Upright that the brush looks the same as pictured here, it almost looks like the bristles were yanked out.

The Indicators are pointless, we get the vorwerks worn down to the plastic too, It depends on who is using the machine, If you can see the indicator is worn out then you could see the brush is worn out too

Oreck brush

 This is extreme but typical of what we often see on Oreck(and it seems to be only Oreck)brushes.Otherwise not a bad vac for the size and weight.Also check fan housing for crack especialy if you see more than usual dust on base.

I've seen it on a couple older and slightly newer Hoovers. Most of them were from machines that had heavy use, such as a Hoover I was given by a lady that cleans houses...Worn to nubs. And I've gotten 2 Hoover elites recently that had worn down to a point where it wasn't picking up in one section, but the rest of the bristles were in usable shape. Seen it on f&g eurekas and probably a couple other vacs. I was not suprised at it happening with an Oreck, those bristles are so soft under heavy use I'd deffinitely expect them to fall apart

The Oreck roller was defective

 Oreck had a bad batch of rollers a number of years ago. The roller shown is one of the defective ones. Those brushes are not worn but broken off rather. They were recalled at one time by Oreck Manufacturing. I don't think they will honor the recall anymore it may be expired. But yes that is not wear by any means but a defect. I think the plastic used for the bristles was too brittle causing them the break off during normal use.

Back when I worked at a hotel, we had a few Dysons that barely had nubs left for brushrolls. Left them to be nearly useless cleaners. I believe they were a mix of DC-18 and Dc-17 units. Needless to say, management went to Riccar after that fiasco. I'm not a dyson hater, but they just cannot hold up to (and were never designed for) a commerical setting.

I blame it on glued down commercial carpeting. We had an Oreck at a church I used to attend, and the bristles were nearly that bad. My Oreck has bristles starting to get thin in spots, but it is still useable.
