Hey everyone, here is my Hoover Turbopower 2 U2090 in an inordinately bright shade of Alpina Yellow.

I got this off eBay last week for £15 the seller was lovely, he was showing me how to use it and I was thinking, yes...I know, I do have 4 already! Bless him. It was in very good condition and the seller let me test it before I bought it and it runs great before and after I cleaned it.

This was the first of the two styles of model U2090, the first one which came out in 1997 was styled like this (pictures bellow) and the other later model from about 2000-2003 had the naff, tacky, cheap lettering on the bag door and cleaner head, but still had the same specification, obviously.

As the Purepower was released at that time (1997) this model was quite a run down Turbopower 2, with no bag-full light and Hoover didn't even include a dusting brush with this model, as it says in the manual, yet it still has the moulding for it!! Even though this model cost only about £99.99 at that time, I still feel it was better than those Purepowers, despite the stonger suction and the top end Purepower was double the price of this Turbopower 2 model!

I didn't need to do much to this apart from give it a good clean and change the filters, the seller provided me with an Electrolux Powerline belt for it!! Bless him. He even gave me the manual, extra bags order form and the guarantee card which were all brandnew and factory sealed in it's packet!! I shall be posting pictures of that later on in the thread.

Now, here is a few before pictures with the after pictures to follow it and then finally the manual.

This is the eBay listing picture, because I stupidly forgot to take a before picture of the assembled machine!

I found stones in the motor cavity, so that was what the rattle was when I was taking it to the car. I am not exactly sure how they found there way in there!

Surprised at the date

As I didn't think Hoover reverted to the narrow bore hose until 1999. I also thought they didn't 'down feature' the Turbopower 2 with the absence of certain tools until that time either. Where did 1997 come from?

I got 1997 from Argos 97 and it features this model (U2090) but it does show the dusting brush, short crevice too and narrow bore hose, mine is from a year later and has no dusting brush or short crevice tool but it does state my model on the manual and inside it says it only comes with a wand, long crevice tool and upholstory tool.

Other side.

alexhoovers94's profile picture

The later Turbopower 2's still performed to the same high standard but they were a little bit "shoddily" put together than the earlier ones, as can be seen by the gap between the body and the bag door.

Post# 243903 , Reply# 12   8/5/2013 at 17:38 (3,913 days old) by vintagerepairer (England)

Yes I see now. I think this cleaner may have originally had a wide-bore hose in the beginning; I don't know how they did it, but that rear veiw photo from your Argos book is of a much earlier TP2 cleaner as it shows two crevice tools fitted to the cleaner, just like the models did when Hoover first switched to a scabbard crevice tool. However, unlike TP2 cleaners of the time I talk of, the mains lead does not appear to attach to the back of the cleaner like they did. It is just possible of course that the the set designers at Argos took tools off another Hoover cleaners so as to fill the gap before photography took place. Having said that, I was given to understand that the manufactures were the ones responsible for supplying photography, although that might relate to brand-new yet-to-be-released stock.

I beleive this never came with a Hoover "roundle"

alexhoovers94's profile picture

I think it didn't actually because other Turbopower 2 models that did have it had a line ground into the plastic behind it where it was stuck on, so the "roundle" could be lined up to the correct angle as you can see, this one doesn't.

Wider ducting which was introduced on the Turbopower 3.

alexhoovers94's profile picture

Earlier models had a ducting which was half the size of that...Hoover claimed on the Turbopower 3 that this wider ducting and the longer, wider hose gave you 35% extra suction power than previous Turbopower 2 models, but all later Turbopower 2's had this wider ducting and mine is proof of that.

Vintagerepairer...

alexhoovers94's profile picture

Yes I did...I think that the picture might of been taken years before, the reason why I think this is because when I washed some of the plastic parts in the bath, the bag door said it was made in 1993, the hood said it was made in 1991! and the body was made in 1994, since the plastic was made for this machine years before it was out (from my knowledge) maybe pictures of an assembled machine before the Turbopower 3, as that is when they did away with the short crevice tool on the Turbopower 2, maybe they assemled one of these yellow ones and photographed it in the earlier 90's ready for Argos to put it in their catalouge in a few years time. That is my thought on the subject.

alexhoovers94's profile picture

At the bottom of the rear of the machine, you can see a circular cut out, if you will, where on Turbopower 3 models there would of been a little hook to attach the hose to, so the machine didn't fall over when cleaning upholstory.

Rating sticker.

alexhoovers94's profile picture

This one was made in 1998 and was the 21 st one off the production line, this is the newer type "Candy dating system" after the serial number there is another set of 4 four numbers, as you can see that is "9821" indicating it was the 21'st one off the production line, unfortunately, I don't think you can get a month from this style of dating system...This dating system applies for the new "Hoover" modles.

It says it is made in the E.C which is either Lisbon (Spain) or Cambuslang (Scotland, UK) I reckon this was probably made over here though. ;)

Well done

I have to confess I did not consider Hoover had made this model many years ahead of it going on sale and photographed it accordingly.

The dates on Hoover plastic parts have always been a source of mystery to me as many a 'new' model in a 'new' colour turned up with a relatively old date stamp on it. I have no knowledge of the processes as it has been well over 40 years since I last had any connection with production of goods, not since my time spent at Morphy Richards, and back then plastic was never really dated in this way.

The good old Activator.

The Purepowers of the same time had an Activator but it had shorter, softer brushes and less pronounced beater pads than  the Turbopower 2 brushroll.

As I stated earlier, the seller gave me the original manual, extra bags order form and guarantee card, unfortunately, I don't have a scanner so I took photos of them, I hope this doesn't spoil it for you!

There it is in it's original sealed packet...Isn't it weird to think that the documents inside the bag have not been touched by human hands in 15 years.

Address

Not quite, this was the UK national address for ordering spares. The department was called 'Gias UK' and they handled all aftercare issues, from parts to engineer visits. They had regional offices around the country who handled the bookings, but this was the HQ address of the company known as Gias.

I am not sure when Hoover stopped listing local service agents in their instruction packs. So few of them existed towards the end of the 1990's and from memory the rates which Hoover paid out to the agents was poor.

Nice

Well that machine looks almost mint! I would say you got one heck of a deal, and in such a striking color too. I wish we had gotten these hoovers over here, we went straight from the elites to the windtunnels which came at a point where the quality had already started to drop.
Anyways, I'm sure you will enjoy it just as much as your other four!

Scott...Thanks!

Well, the colour is rather striking to say the least, I had to take it downstairs for fear of loosing sleep over it! :P I do however love the colour, you can tell they were from the 90's were fashion was at it's brightest!

The Turbopower 1's that we had were not the best built machine, but they were not terrible or cheaply built, the plastic was just rather thinnner in areas that it should of been thicker! The Turbopower 2 (released in 1992) was FAR more sturdy and not to mention quieter! The Turbopower 2 didn't perform as well as the good old dirty air Turbopower 1 but they were still dam good!

I was really pleased with the condition of this machine, it had the odd few marks and scuffs on it but overall it is pretty good.

You got the windtunnle in 1997, didn't you? I have used one of the early Hoover windtunnles that my friend owns, it is VERY good but it is WAY to loud. :P I also Have our version of your Hoover Elite 200...The Hoover Turbolite, it is a very good machine, I still didn't think it was AS good as our Turbopower 1's or Turbomaster, the Turbomaster/Innovations are REALLY good!

Alex.

Loving that paperwork, you did the right thing by opening it up!

However, you can see the 'cheapening' of Hoover by this stage on the paperwork, ratehr than tailored to the machine as it was it's just a generic pack meant for many different models!

If you think the yellow is bright now, give it a good polish hand wax. You need sunglasses to see it then!

1997

Yep, you are spot on with the date. I wasn't meaning to say that the windtunnels were bad or anything, just that they were loud, had short hoses, fell over when using the hose, and the self propelled models had some mechanical issues.

I also really like the elite 200, it's my favorite out of all the elites and yours is in great shape(I have seen your video of it). Although just from looks I would say your turbopowers cleaned better with the activator, and I also prefer the looks of your turbopowers to the elites.

I would love to find an innovation one day, they are such neat machines!

What a comprehensive thread Alex - well done indeed.

That TP2 looks brand new, you have done a fantastic job of cleaning it up.

One thing that puzzles me though is why it has a Candy ID sticker yet my 1999 Turbopower 2 had a Hoover sticker? Strange!

Sam - Thanks and your welcome :) I could do with cleaning off some of those marks around the bumper.

Scott - The Turbopower 2's never had any issues from my experience, the only issue they had was that the brushroll bearings were prone to going bad rather quickly and were VERY noisy after a number of uses. The Activator was very good, although the Turbolite/Elite 200 does have a very decent brushroll. I like the look of both the Turbopowers and the Elites for different reasons, although, the Elites seem to have more "sticky out bits" than the Turbopowers, they look more "flush" if you see what I mean.

Jamie - Thanks.

Alex.

Oh, I forgot to put the Yellow Turbopower 2 on the photo, didn't I? Aww shucks!

Anyway, aside from my 'sense' of humour with the Turbopower 2's pardon the pun :) Ok, I will stop now, you can see that they are all in order of specification, starting with highest spec on the left.

There you can see the rear of the machines, you can see how they took away the short crevice tool on the later Turbopower 2's after the Turbopower 3 came out.

That was why there was a "cut out" on later Turbopower 2's it was were you could hook a rubber "dudar" on the hose to secure it to the rear of the machine while you cleaner upholstory, to prevent the machine from falling over.

This is what I meant, where I said earlier in the thread that behing the Hoover roundle there was a line in the plastic to correctly configure the angle of the roundle.

That one has the newer motor, by the sound of it. The original always seemed much smoother sounding, to me.

Yh, I see what you mean Benny, this is a 900 watt version, however. I do have another standard version, pictured above, model U2462, that has an 800 watt motor and seems more higher pitch sounding than this, although, that model has the original narrow internal ducting and this 900 watt version, like my Turbopower 3 has a wider ducting, could that be the reason it sounds different? Apart from the 900 watts difference. :P

I like the Turbopower 2s, my personal favourite out of all of the turbopowers'. I'm after one as well.

On the other hand however, the coulour of this machien. At the time this machine was made most Dyson machines we're yellow (well had yellow bin inserts anyway). Seeming as the DC01 took the market by storm, the 'paint job' of this Turbopower 2 looks like a cheap naff attempt at making something that looks like a Dyson. This does not mean i don't like the Turbopower 2, just not in this colour.

Can i ask, we're there any other colours the Turbopower 2 came in?

You name the colour...

...and there was probably a Turbopower 2, 3, or 1000 in it. Reds, greens, blues of course, and as you've seen, in later years yellow too. I have never considered that the yellow colour was chosen to look in any way like a Dyson; indeed by the time that this Turbopower was on sale, it was purple and multi-colours which Dyson was becoming recognized for.

Most vacuum cleaner manufacturers have made their wares in all colours under the sun over the years, indeed during the 1970's Electrolux seemed to have quite an affection for completely yellow cleaners, whilst others came with yellow / orange accents.
