Hi all,

Out of Henry, Hetty, Harry, George, or James vacuum cleaners do you prefer, and why?

I would be interested to know. Personally I like James the best, soon followed by Henry. But what are your thoughts?

Talk to me people! :)

Henry - the best all rounder for all round dry dirt suction in the home - less weight to pull due to the longer 2.5 metre hose and easy to use unless you have stairs and limited space.

Hetty - I have never used a Hetty vacuum - I'm put off by the pink colour, though kudos to those who aren't.

Harry - I have never used a Numatic Harry before I have used Numatic Basil and the Charles model -love the Charles model for wet and dry, great for use in the garden and only downside being that you have to lasso up the cord manually even though there are two storing hooks on the back end. As with George, does possess the ability to be used with bigger dust bags than the smaller Henry/Harry/Hetty/Basil models though.

George - George is the well made 3 in 1 tub canister vacuum that has stolen Vax's thunder in recent years. One reason to why Vax don't make as many full size canister shampoo/3 in 1 machines anymore despite new tools added. George is easy to use though bulky.

James - a good one for small homes because of the smaller length hose, cord length. Pity he lacks the bowler hat cord winder though Numatic could easily fit one with the shorter cord length as well as decent aluminium tubes that aren't a chore to fit or remove.

Just an FYI, Henry, Hetty and Harry are all exactly the same cleaner. The only difference between Henry and Hetty is the colour and Harry has the Hairo turbo brush included, but that's it

Yes, Henry, Hetty, Harry are exactly the same, but the Harry has the small turbo nozzle & a better filter system. James is the more basic version, but a lot of people like him for his more compactness against Henry.

George is said to be better than a VAX Multifunction, but as I have never used George I can't comment on him.

If I had the choice, I'd go for a Henry Xtra, which has the Autosave feature plus the Full Size Airo Brush & Hard floor nozzle in addition to the main combination head. My school uses them.

The Henry looks like a $100 shop vac with a smile, gimmick

It may look like a gimmick but the Numatic series are used in hospitals, schools and most commercial establishments as well as the domestic market - some don't even have the face. Something so simple yet built with durable components, a sealed system, superb power and suction with low cost consumables. What could be easier? Lets see now though, the U.S have had soft bag vacuums with outlandish colours -they seem to be popular judged by the amount collectors have shown on here - nothing less than a smile on a tub vacuum cleaner.

Why atack Americans? I am not a fan of any product by the fact it is made in the US. I like, Miele, Sebo and own a 40 year old Citroen. Lets keep the Nationality of the makers out of the debate. If someone is foolish enough to purchase a Kirby for $2000, God bless
them no matter where it is manufactured.

Numatic machines use two-stage Ametek Lamb motors. I dare you to find a "$100 shop vac" currently available that's powered by a two-stage motor...

It really is amazing what a face and a name can do to create respect amongst commercial vacuum users. Numatic machines, while extremely well built, simple and easy to take care of, tend to be kept in better condition because it's a "person".

I was referring to the fact that vacuums with unusual bag colours are as much as a gimmick as Numatic's smile. The Numatic is much better than just a Shop Vac.

I personally..

Would love to have a Henry, it is much more practical than any of the American machines, at least it LOOKS like it is, I have never seen one in person, i have a GS90 Nilfisk, and I know its a great machine, so my general opinion of European machines is favorible, unlike the cheap junk made here.

I like the Henry the best because its the most British looking to me, luke the Dyson DC01 for example, and I like Henry.s looks along with features, and Hetty is the same as henry. But its the femininne version :)

I have seen a Henry and trust they are well built but the Country of manufacturing guarantees nothing. The Miele S7 has many issues for a German machine that is supposed to last 20 years. The Miele dealer by me told me he only likes the Miele canisters because the S7 need service and repairs too often. the simple design of the Henry I am sure is why they are so bullet proof. Would like to see some nice PN with the Henry.

Numatics are not so called 'shop vacs.' Although bagged ( I prefer bagless), Henry is good value for money. With Autosave technology as standard, which I like! Also those GIANT HEPA Flow bags which are better than normal paper bags, also don't clog as often and take some time to fill up

The face on Henry and other Numatic vacuum cleaners has become a design icon. For me personally, that face makes me feel warm and happy inside. I suffer from depression and when ever I see Henrys face it makes me feel better.

Well Henry is a darn sight quieter than the Vax canister & Karcher "special" wash tub I tried in Currys recently. For a tub vacuum you get better quality than Karcher and Vax plus a 2 speed suction facility.

The Smile...

turbo500's profile picture
Numatic started manufacturing high quality commercial machines in the early 1970's. the face was added because the bosses at Numatic noticed how much of a lonely job commercial cleaning is and and thought that "characterising" the vacuum would make it a slightly more pleasent job.

Numatic are currently the best selling vacuum cleaner in the UK. They branched into the domestic market in the late 1990's due to high demand from people who had seen and used them in their offices, hotels and shops. They're also the best selling commercial brand in Europe.

My Dad has a Numatic NV250 from 1979 that he got when he first joined British Gas. It's never missed a beat, despite being used to clean domestic and commercial boilers

He is indeed Corgi registered. He used to work on the side, but stopped years ago. What do you need doing, Rob? My Dad probably won't do it, but he might know somebody that will do it cheaper than British Gas for you
