I suspect that my grandmother was ripped off by an Oreck dealer. I was at her house yesterday and she asked me if I wanted to vacuum with her "new" Oreck. I suspect that it was refurbished by some kind of a moron. The first thing I noticed was that the brushroll was hitting against the rug guard and making a terrible rattling-clicking noise. Not something I would expect from Oreck. And there was no spare belt on the underside. When was this model made? My grandmother paid $499 PLUS her old Oreck.

The Pilot models do not have a spare belt on the bottom. They use a "lifetime belt". Like Dan said, just take it back to the store and have them look at it.

That still doesn't explain the horrible noise the brushroll makes. I took it apart, cleaned and adjusted it. It is set on "normal".

The rattle is the cord guards as already stated

This is a common annoyance with some batches of baseplates. The Oreck store can replace it under warranty. There is no real threat with the sound. I have personally had customers who fussed about it but it never bothers me. If all else fails take the channel sweep off ( only the channel not the whole baseplate) and put a drop if hot glue on the wire form where it goes under the channel sweep. Smush the microsweep back on and screw it down. Its a cheap and easy fix that almost always works.
