I found this listing on eBay today, sold by Great-Vacs. It looks extremely similar to a UK Turbopower, so maybe it is produced by the same manufacturer? Does anyone have information on this new "Prolux Lite" cleaner?

Yep, the Turbo Power isn't made by Hoover at all - comes from China and sold originally in Germany under the brand name Clean Maxx Multicyclone Z8 - see previous posts on here as well as

It is a sad day when Hoover jumps on the bandwagon of sticking their name on a cleaner they had no part in making.

What a shame the red circle no longer stands for quality and durability.

For modern cleaners I'll be sticking with my Numatic!

At least I can look at my pre-2000 Hoovers and see that they USED to be a good brand - the best even. But not anymore.

The drive for profit at any cost

The end of the great Hoovers came at the end of the 1970s. Once the 80's came - everything went cheap and plasticky - the 80s was the start of the throwaway society, where greed for profit became more important than quality or customer satisfaction. If only I could turn back time. The Hoover-Candy company now has got a cheek to slander and defame the once brilliant Hoover name by producing cheap rubbish made in China. And sorry, but most of it IS cheap rubbish compared to the well made and long lasting Hoovers of the pre-80's era.

I completely agree Steve, but you have to admit that their products were still pretty good until the millennium. If was after the turn of the 21st Century that Hoover put their final phase of "nastiness" into the production line by moving EVERYTHING to China and squeezing every last penny of profit from their products by reducing quality to an absolute minimum.

The worst thing is, even if Hoover had stayed in the family (so to speak), it probably would have ended up being cheapened eventually anyway.

One thing I know for sure is that Boss Hoover would be turning in his grave if he could see the state his company was in now.

Even during the 1990s, Hoover products in their floorcare range weren't as good as the classic uprights and cylinder vacs. You moan about plastics and quality, and yet Hoover's entire line of floorcare ranges were following suit with plastics, and I may add, not all floorcare machines were built very well. Some machines were made in France, Spain and even the UK - but clearly even before the move to Asia, Hoover were cost cutting. Don't blame it all on China - Hoover, the company were continually losing money, no matter where the production was located.

And its not just Hoover that do this is it Jamie - Vax seem to be producing some really cheap and nasty products these days, riddled with manufacturing defects and design faults. I've witnessed some of these with a few Vaxes I have recently bought - and in particular the Mach Air Reach, and Mach Air 3 where cyclone seals have failed and hoses come apart from the housings, tools that wont stay on the end of the hoses, and hoses that wont stay on the end of the wand handle on the Air 3 and quite frankly I'm just not impressed - build quality of Chinese made stuff is getting pretty dire now. Why do they all have to do it? Why cant they make stuff here instead of China then ship it halfway round the globe? Pennypinching Jamie - plain and simple. And I bet the Scottish know the meaning of that word lol! hehehehe!

At least Miele and Sebo still make vacs in the good old EU, and AEG Electrolux still make stuff in the EU too. But after buying some right lemons recently I am not buying any more vacs that are made in Flamin China!

Actually, Steve - AEG/Electrolux also produce vacuums in China. I think the Nimble is made in China as well as the current line of AEG branded Electrolux cylinder vacs in the UK.

It isn't the fact that it is made in China that is the issue. After all, all my computers including my fab Apple Macbook are all made in China. My Pure Evoke (one of the very first DAB portable radios) is also made in China and is now coming up for 7 years of reliable and effective performance and quality - it is down to the brand.

Even in the 1990s whilst Vax quality of plastics was largely down to Dirt Devil from the U.S, who in turn also produced vacuums in China, the company compromised on the quality for sales and having Dirt Devil produce the vacuums gave Vax a much wider floorcare range than they could dream of.

Without Dirt Devil in the U.S, Vax would still be surviving on its canister tub vacuums and AVC/Bosch merge big cyclone upright alone - products that wouldn't really survive in this day and age against wider products from bigger brands.

Well sebo_fan I'm amazed about that - I was interested in buying one of the AEG Ultra-one range, as I thought they were made in Germany, I will have to go to Currys and have a look at the label on the display models. Are you absolutely sure the Ultra-One is made in China? I know there have been complaints about the Top model with the motorised power nozzle switching the cleaner off by itself, but the other models seem to have good reviews and they use the S-Bag system, so similar in design to the Miele canisters. I also like the LED display on them too.

Once again though dont be put off just because a brand's model is made in China. Im not near a John Lewis store at the moment so it would be impossible to check the back of the rating plate on the Ultra One. Certainly if you see PRC / People's Republic China, then that's where it has been made.

Hi Guys

With regard to AEG I can confirm the Nimble is made in China it was quiet a shock to me as I expected it to made in Hungary but it is very well made with solid good quality components, my UltraPerformer is made in EU and although a good quality well made cleaner feels no better made than the Nimble, I also keep looking at the UltraOne and I know they used to be made in Europe, if they still are I don't know but I'm sure it will be well made regardless.

The Hoover above I think quiet a few of us knew it was just a rebaged model, I hope this isn't going to be a growing trend for Hoover I have a strong suspicion the Hoover Curve cyclinder is another rebadged model as well.

Dan
