This is another Hoover I stumbled across during my "week of Hoovers" odyssey. I found this thrift store in the phone book and decided to give it a try. It was late in the afternoon about an hour before closing when I spied this in their downstairs housewares/furniture room. I looked at it then walked away, went back, looked again, checked the underside, then walked away. No price on her and I wasn't sure I should spend any more money on vacuums.

I decided that I would come back the following day when they would be having a 50% off all electric appliance sale. If it was gone, then so be it, that would be fate.

I had to work in the morning, so I went later that day, once I was free. Since there was no price, I asked the manager about the vacuum. She told me to offer a price and I said how about 10 dollars pre-sale bringing it to 5 dollars with the 50% discount.

So there you have it...my $5 Hoover. What can you experts tell me about this one. It is model U4119.

Yesterday, I was at my favorite thrift, (the one that seems to get vacuums and parts in on a regular basis), and they had this same model but they were asking 15 dollars. I passed since I have this one and I don't know if I should be getting doubles unless it is something really special. The bag on the 15 dollar one was in better condition, the body on my vac was better though. I didn't think the better bag justified me in purchasing another since I really have to watch what I spend overall on this hobby. If anyone thinks it is unique or special, I will get it, but otherwise i will pass.

Decisions, decisions LOL
Nothing says you can't offer them less especially if it sits there for a few days. That is if you decide to go for it. The brushroll is worth looking at as well just in case yours is worn and that $15 one is in better shape.

Debbie...

Wow...Hoovers just seem to be falling out of the sky for you. This was a VERY popular model for Hoover and it was produced from about 1978 to the early 1980's. It was a low end one speed cleaner. This model was one of the first all plastic Convertible models too. I remember that my best friend's mom had one and the tracks that it left in their deep pile plush carpet. (They also had a blue Portable Cleaning Center!) I think that you got a great deal on this one. The earlier models had a steel lined fan chamber but this was removed on the later ones for cost reduction. I think that these could be had for around $40-$50 or possibly less on sale. Yours seems to be in great condition too. I am sure that it will receive the same spa like treatment that your other Hoover cleaners have gotten.

Wow, 9 of these? I guess they are pretty common.

Pete,

I am going to see if the other one sits there for a bit. I have a hunch it will. They have a Kirby heritage there that has been sitting for ages. They wanted 70 dollars for it originally now it is down to 40 (and it even has all its attachments). At this point I think they would take any offer just to get rid of it.

They also have a Hoover Spirit canister vac that has been there forever. They wanted 69 dollars for it originally and now it is down to 40 as well.

There is one manager there who you can really bargain with, I think he is the main boss. He is the one who gave me the Hoover odds and ends I bought a few weeks ago for probably 50% off what they were marked at.

I am going to go back next week, and if he is there I will see what kind of deal I can get on that other Hoover. I could certainly combine the two to make one really good one, and keep the leftover for spare parts or a not as good second one.

Definitely go for the spirit. They are great vacs. Nice convertible too.

$40 for a Spirt? Are they crazy? It's worth less than half of that at a thrift store no less.

Pete,

They were even crazier when it was 69 dollars! I don't think it has all the attachments either. I can see the Kirby for $70. I would consider the spirit if it was $10 maybe.

Here's one on eBay with a gray bag. Did they come with gray bags too? The cord looks like it might be gray also.

that's nothing compared to what I paid for my spirit. I paid about $110! Go for it. You won't regret it.

Wow! $110 for the spirit? Did you get it on eBay? It must be a great vacuum. I noticed you are in Northeast Pa, whereabouts?
