As I have said, I am working on a Model 800 Hoover I found a few months ago. I asked about the color of the logo badge on the top of the agitator housing; mine is orange whereas the other 800 badges I've seen are black -- I did not get a definitive answer about my question on that badge. Some said it may have been a case of Hoover using up old stock, some said it may have been replaced when the machine was rebuilt, etc. etc. etc.

Well, that's all fine, really -- nothing like a bit of mystery to keep life interesting!

Now then, I am ready to proceed with the bag. I present for your consideration five options and I am soliciting your votes for which one you think will look best on my 800. Please identify your vote by Bag Number #.

I don't want to make too many restrictions on voting but I should make one -- NONE of these are strictly original 800 bags, so don't cast your bet on that basis. Just pick the one you like best. (According to Tom Anderson of Hoover, the original bag was black and gray with GOLD lettering -- something I have never seen!!)

LET THE VOTING BEGIN!

BAG # 2!!!!

Bag # 1 is from a 475, so I wouldn't use that!

Bag # 2 is the right pattern. I don't know about the gold vs silver, since I've only seen black-and-white pictures of the original.

Bag # 3 I assume is a 1940's genuine Hoover replacement

Bag # 4 is a geniune Hoover replacement for a pre-1929 machine, or for a 575, since these had bag spreaders, whereas later machines did not.

Bag # I think is also a geniune Hoover replacement.

To me there is no contest; Bag # 2 every time. If I was lucky enough to own that bag, it would most definitely go on my 800!

BTW, I thought I gave a definite answer to your questions; early 450/800/925's DID have orange badges! If you look at this manual, you can see the bag pattern, and the badge is also light in colour; it's not a black one.

Bag #4

I like bags #2 and #4, but I am in agreement with Dave that bag #4's orange lettering would be a perfect complement to the badge.

Well, I think #2 should be the winner. It is very pretty, as are all of them! Did you use your Hoover Bag Cleaner(s)? :-)

I knew it would! All orange is the way to go. Gives the Jazz Age machine real swagger like he has on a Zoot Suit.

Team the conservative silver/gray bag on a regular run-of-the-mill black badge.

The second one (formally Bag #4).

Post# 23094 , Reply# 25   10/26/2007 at 22:47 (5,997 days old) by em-tor64 ()

Ah yes, definitely the second one.
The orange on the bag nicely compliments the orange badge.

AND THE WINNER IS...

... the bag with orange lettering! I agree with those who feel it looks nice with the orange badge, especially after seeing both bags on the machine.

Now I am wondering, which model would the bag with the silver lettering be for? I know there was a Silver Jubilee model (425), and the bag was black with silver lettering, but there's a long coiled line at the top of that bag -- the same bag as the 750. In fact, isn't the 750 the Silver Jubilee model just with the silver and black logos instead of orange and black?

Stan told me a funny story about the Silver Jubilee model in my long interview with him (see link). I asked him the question, "What was your first contact with the main Hoover company, in Canton?"

He replied:

The only thing I remember is that I wrote them about a machine, which was a big lie! I wanted an original Silver Jubilee bag for the model 425 Hoover I had. I had just a regular bag; it didn't say "Silver Jubilee." So I wrote them a long letter — in fact I still have a copy of their reply — I said, "We have had two Hoovers for years, and one of them is a model 425. But our Silver Jubilee bag wore out and it's never been the same since!" I also explained that I collect vacuum cleaners. Well, I didn't hear anything for a while. Then all of a sudden I got a letter back. Their head of service wrote me back and said, "We’ve never heard of anybody with such a hobby. This [425] bag is yours, free of charge. All I ask is that you send us the old bag that you are using on the cleaner, whatever it Is."

-------

Thanks to all those who participated in this Hoover Election! I'm going to take more photos of the 800 and post them later.

Think I would have picked that one, too. Leave it to me to not get into my email until after the voting has ended. By the way, would you be interested in selling the 475 bag??

actually Jeff i asked the same Question to Charlie....LOL guess we both need that bag!

Kyle, the bag you asked about, #4, is not the 475 bag. The 475 bag is #1.

#4 is a later, aftermarket (but genuine Hoover) replacement for the earlier machines that had the spreader-tops.
