I recently rescued an ancient Premier canister vac from my grandmother's basement, and was wondering if the dust bag can possibly be gently laundered? It has acquired quite a funky odor from sitting in the basement for so long with dirt in it. I would also appreciate any info on where I might be able to get a spare when this one finally craps out. Thanks guys. This post was last edited 06/15/2013 at 09:59 |

Premier Itself is long gone, 1970s-ish gone. Parts for your cleaner will likely be rarer than Hen's teeth.
However. Depending on the opening size of the bag chamber, a paper bag might fit, is there a way for you to post any pictures?
As for the current cloth bag, It would all be determined by condition. If the bag is rough, and dry-rotted, I wouldn't suggest laundering it, and usage with the bag may not be probable.
If the bag is still in Excellent, or Pristine condition, though, The bag is likely still usable. GENTLE laundering is a possibility, and be sure to buy a bottle of a LOVELY Kirby Odorific, Two drops on a cotton ball, suck it into the vacuum, no horrid odors
I would check with other members, though, before proceeding, They've likely had more experience than I have when it comes to this matter :D
Hope this is of assistance, -Alex. |

The current cloth bag seems to be in very good condition given its age. When I emptied it yesterday it didn't feel stiff or show any signs of dry rot. There is a thin metal shaft with a round disc in the center of the bag chamber, how would I get a paper bag over/around this without cutting a hole in the paper bag? Ignorant newbie here. Unable to post pics, sorry. |

The cloth bag goes back into the machine first. The disposable bag is like a grocery sack - open ended. You insert the disposable bag into the cloth bag, and tuck the edges under the rubber ring of the cloth bag. The tube in the center of the tank is to keep the bag from being inhaled against the motor's air intake. The cloth bag is a support for the paper bag, which will filter the dirt and keep the cloth bag clean.

I remember changing my mom's GE canister. You put the paper bag over the top of the canister, turned it on , and it sucked it down into place. There should be directions on the pkg. of bags. |
