Hey guys.. hope all are well..just wanted to share some info, that i replaced my Convertible U4401 plastic fans with a metal 11 blade fan and the metal cooling fan for the top of the motor. It sounds really smooth and quiet just like the old metal converibles. Could that be the reason why it sounds that way? Before it had the normal vibrating sound the plastic convertibles make with the 4.8 amp motor.. just happen to come across the metal parts from an old metal convertible and decided to replace it. now just makes a quiet hum almost as if its running without a belt?? but the brushroll spins great and seems to have better airflow? just wanted ya'll feedback if anyone has done this before? i know some of the earlier plastic convertibles did come with metal fans just wasn't sure why it was changed to all plastic?

Andy, sounds great, I'm sure.

Everything went plastic for cost reduction. Also, they wanted everything lighter. There's nothing like a metal HOOVER. A lot of people change the blades AND, especially, the plate on the bottom of the cleaner. Enjoy!
John.

ill tell you,

I have done this a time or two, and every other time I've had no problem. But one time with a higher end, type "A" bag model from the early 80's, that another collector put a metal fan into, as nice as it sounded, it just didn't seem to pickup as well, and i found my self passing over spots several times, i discovered that for some unexplainable reason that particular Convertible demanded a plastic fan...I don't know why to this day. But i have done metal fans in several others, and never had a day of trouble....

The heavier fan

Probably acts like a flywheel giving the motor more rotational momentum. That's my theory, it works that way in the small engine world as well.
