Hi everyone,

I'm working on the Model XXX that was given to me a couple months ago, and besides being dirty (imagine that:->) it is in pretty good shape. The hose was no good so I bought a new one for it. The cord was also no good. It was brittle and cracking so I replaced it as well. It runs well, not noisy, and very smooth. Questions I have are:

1. How may filters does this machine use? I figure one goes in the backside of the machine where the exhaust port is. Is there also supposed to be one in the bag chamber as well?

2. What do you use for a filter? I've been trying to find some, but no luck. I tried the Aerus web site, and while they do carry filters, they specifically state no parts/filters for the XXX. Where do you get filters for yours, or is there a decent substitute?

3. While the machine runs well, the switch is broken in the on position (better than the off position). Where can I get a new switch for it?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Hi Joe,

The XXX uses one filter. It goes inside the rear compartment as you surmised. Replacement filters are no longer made. They do turn up on eBay every now and then, sometimes with sets of other attachments or accessories.

An good alternative would be a central heater filter, outer wire criss-cross material removed and then cut to size. You can pull off the rear cover and place it onto the filter material and draw around it a felt-tip marker and then cut to size. This won't cut down the noise quite as much as an original pad would but that's actually a good thing because it means the airflow is not impeded as much. You will find that the rear cover won't fit tightly until there is some sort of filter inside, as the material acts as a sort of gasket to seat the rear cover in place.

Ditto for a replacement switch -- you may have to find a grotty old XXX to use as a "parts donor."

Good luck!

Charles Richard, correct me if I'm wrong, but.

Electrolux machines didn't need a filter, it was there to catch the residue from the carbon brushes. However, in the Electrolux LX instruction book it was reccomended that you change the filter every six months. Most people didn't! I think it began with the model E or E automatic, that the filter bag eliminated the need of the exhaust filter.

Alex, the rear filter on the XXX is most necessary. Look at one that was left in a machine for 20-30 years without being changed (which I have seen many, many times over the years), and you'll see why. In addition to, yes, being black with carbon dust residue, it would also be clogged through and through with fine, powdery dirt. The cloth bag in the XXX was not efficient enough a filter to eliminate all the dust. Also, as I said, without a filter in the machine the rear cover will not fit tightly and leaking blower air will whistle around the edges of the cover.

The last model to have a rear filter was the E-Automatic. Keep in mind that the early disposable bags were only two ply -- the outer paper layer and a single layer of tissue-like paper inside. The new, improved bags that were introduced with the Model F were four ply -- outer layer plus three tissue layers. The rear filter in the F was done away with in favor of a rear end containing a system of baffles to deflect the air flow and reduce the motor noise somewhat.

Thank you Charles Richard.

As always, I bow to your knowledge. Stands to reason that the XXX needed the rear filter. You also mentioned the whistling if there wasn't a tight seal on the front cover. What made the LX whistle just before the ejection process began? As a small child hearing that whistle told me to get ready, if not that day, then sometime soon it was going to eject.

I have several wrappers and the original box as well as two filters still in the packaging. I also have the original hose (shown here,) though the suction end coupling end leaks. If I trim the hose 1/4" it will be fine, but how do I attach the coupling to the hose?

Thanks for the correction,

Robert Alexander.

No need to bow, a kiss of the ring will be sufficient. ;P

Well, I was saying that the rear cover (not the front) of the XXX would whistle if you run it without a filter, because the cover does not fit tightly against the back of the machine. It also hangs somewhat loose.

I somehow misplaced the ring that the filter goes on for my Model 30, unless it's in some of my unpacked stuff from my last move.
