I'll bet Pennsylvania's flea markets are primo. Hope you made a killing there, good luck all around!

Well, I am back from over three hours of thrifting, and sad to say I returned home with an empty car. Nothing! I saw a few (very few) vacs at the Quakertown Farmer's Market (Q-Mart), and the ones I did see were the newer variety...bagless junk. The oldest vacuum there was a Eureka Boss. Loads of dust busters and dirt devil hand vacs. Overall, the general quality of merchandise was disappointing. I am seeing less and vintage items and more and more purveyors of; cheap knock-off cologne, socks, Chinese tools and kitchen gadgets, tables of tacky jewelry, etc. I see this trend at every flea market I visit.

Rudy's was my next stop and was equally disappointing. Now bear in mind, Rudy's a few years ago was a place similar to Pete's favorite thrift stop.

Rudy's was on a huge property and there were several very large buildings on site, stuffed with goodies. He had an entire level with old tools, and several floors filled with estate sale type finds, all for a very reasonable price. It would take a couple hours just to sort through everything. I would often make a day of Rudy's alone, and I always walked out of there with several items.

The beginning of the end came when the owner of the property Rudy's was on decided to sell it. Rudy had to relocate. He moved to his present location, which is nowhere as large as what he had before, but still, he seemed to have a lot of quality vintage items, and again I would always leave with at least something.

I haven't been to Rudy's for probably 2 years, now he seems to have turned into a garden center and furniture store. He always sold furniture, even at his old location, so I was used to that. But, the collectibles and general "junk" has lessened considerably and is now confined to a small attic room. His prices are still reasonable for what he has.

He had a tan Sears hand vac called the Kenmore Handi-Vac that I considered purchasing, it had extra bags and looked complete. There was no price on it, but I am sure it wasn't going to be more than 5 dollars. I don't really collect hand vacs, I already have a couple (I love my Little Lux), so I passed on it. If you think it is worth getting, I would certainly go back for it. I believe it to be from the late 70's from the look of it.

After Rudy's I made another stop on the way home to a store I noticed that was called The Thrift Shoppe. It was really more of an antique store, with antique store pricing. Again they had a pile of vacs, they were Eureka Wind Tunnel and that ilk.

So, not a productive day day at all, but still it was a beautiful weather to be out and about "junking."

Based on what I have read lately on this board, I think my only alternative is to move to Ohio, or Sarnia.

Alan,

In spite of my rant here, PA does have a lot of great flea markets, but they are spread out in different directions from my location, so I have to choose one each outing. This link below is an excellent one. I will try there next week. There is another one called Green Dragon which is only open one day a week and from what I have heard it is one of the best!

Ahttp://www. I know what you mean though about many so called flea markets now selling new tacky junk like those socks, colognes, belts, gaudy ornaments and stuff. Similar to that junk you see being sold in many mall hallways on cart/kiosks but worse. LOL

Just wondering was the Kenmore Hand Vac like the little blue one in the back of this picture. They're actually very good little vacuums.

Hi Pete,

No it was different than that. Didn't have a hose at all. The front cap had the Kenmore Handi-Vac logo on it with the dusting brush attached. So basically you had to unscrew this dusting brush front to insert the bags. It had sears written on the sides, but Kenmore Handi-Vac on the dusting brush.

I am thinking now I should go get it tomorrow. I am sure it will be there. Seems like most folks there wanted pumpkins, mums, Adirondack chairs, and garden trellises.

I went junking two days this week, and got one record album. I'm sorry your trip out was uneventful Debbie, and with your link, I discovered two events in Mt.Dora, FL. that I will attend one of. And you, Pete as usual, with your neat seemingly endless supply of swag. Great Porta Powers!
