If it's Westinghouse!
The carousel canister cleaner. Note the telescopic wand (right hand wand). Could lengthen or shorten by about 8 inches.

The ad

The ad for the Carousel Canister. Note the price was higher than an Electrolux (the Automatic E was $89, same time period).

Speed Cleaner. It actually has four wheels, two little ones in the back help the two large side ones. Rolls much easier than a Roll Easy.

Straight Suction

Upright Cleaner. Westinghouse was 'in the game' well before World War II.

The styling on this very Art Deco inspired Westinghouse Upright with motor-driven brush.

Westinghouse Uprights..

Were kind of strange, they had the one pictured, then the all plastic/bakelite model, then the one stoke, which was a ultra modern design, then they went back to the earlier style?????

I have this brochure on my hard drive but don't remember where I got it. Isn't this a gorgeous vacuum cleaner!

Then there was the Westinghouse Convert-A-Vac which I don't have and don't have any photos of. When I was a little boy a lady in my dad's church had one. I thought it was the ugliest and stupidest sweeper I'd ever seen -- at the tender age of 10! She also had an old Kenmore streamlined upright, not the Commander but one in two-tone brown, metal and bakelite housing and a dark brown . She kept it in a broom closet in her kitchen. Whenever we went over there, I always wanted to see it, and use it! But she wouldn't let me because I guess I must have hurt her feelings telling her what I thought about her Convert-A-Vac!

I also have a maroon Westinghouse tank, similar to the silver one, but I can't find any photos of it.

Then the last one I have is this straight-suction upright.

Charles,

That Captain brochure came from me. I think it is post-WWII, perhaps '46? BTW...what is the model number of that GE next to your Westinghouse straight-suction? It's gotta be one of the earliest headlight GE's...JL

John, I don't know the model of the G.E. as I no longer have it. It is a stunningly beautiful machine, right up there with the Kenmore Imperial & Singer R-1.

Speaking Of The Captain,

Here's mine! A Westinghouse model F1-46 upright, with attachments. The vacuum itself seems to be identical to the one in the brochure, but the attachments are slightly different. Handle end of the hose is longer on mine, and it has 2 straight chrome wands instead of one straight and one curved. My crevice tool is different, and I also have a dusting brush with my set. But I am missing the blower coupler, and it appears there is a slot in the caddy for a sprayer, which I don't have either.
It's a great running machine and has remarkable suction with the attachments, but the brushroll is shot and it could use a new cord. The original bag is in good shape, except that the gold printing is quite faded.
Jeff

And My Cannister!

hygiene903's profile picture
This is the model SC-1 Westinghouse cannister. Think it was made in 1956. It belonged to my Aunt Lu and Uncle Jim, and I got it when they went into assisted living about 12 years ago. Most of their appliances were Westinghouse, as Uncle Jim worked at the Westinghouse plant in Mansfield OH most of his life, and could get them for half price if I remember right.
So the SC-1 is a great running vac and is all original except for the cord and bag.
Jeff
