This week Michael Turner,Duane Taylor and Tania Voight met at my house. Of course they all had upcoming Convention ideas to discuss but first we got to see Michael's fantastic "new in box" GE Roll Around Cleaner!
What a beauty.

Testing the GE's ease of use on the hardwood floors. It was a dream to roll over my kitchen floors.

Tania secured one of her life time vac treasures. It was in beautiful condition and as you can see she was one VERY HAPPY collector. She was able to find the machine, all tools and the tool carrier.
I enjoyed "looking only" at an early Rexair model "A". It went back on the shelf, but a nice chance to view the machine in person.

As you can see Duane's truck was full of machines when they left my house!
Thanks to Tania,Duane and Michael for such a fun 3 day vac meet and vac hunts.
Tania brought me parts to finish my Rexair "B" and Duane did expert repairs on 2 of my Air-Ways.
We also made a stop at Michael's house to view his collection. We were all so interested in seeing his collection that I forgot to take the camera inside.
What a beautiful collection of Hoover's Michael has and thank you for sharing them with us.
I DO hope they had time to work on their convention but it's hard when old vac friends meet and the machines start coming out!

Many thanks to Tania for the parts and Duane for the expert repair on both my parents and grandparents Air-Ways.
I was quite shocked at the difference in both power and how quiet both machines were at their peak. Big difference from the screamers we have today.
$92.50 was big money back in 1952 for the 66 Air-Way!

Thanks to Tania for the parts to complete my old Rexair "b" . It was a fooler too with a good hose it has quite a bit more suction!
Again I was surprised at how well made and quiet this old machine was for it's time. Love the unique swing carpet tool.

Duane Taylor,
I thought you would be interested in this since your family were Air-Way dealers.
I was showing the old 66 Air-Way to a neighbor and she was amazed when I showed her all the unique features of the old Air-Way compared to cleaners on the market at the same time:
(1) It stands up in the center of a large room and because it stands up it gives the user a longer hose reach
(2) the dura-aluminum wands are so much lighter to handle and the "S" shape allow them to go under furniture WITHOUT bending down or twisting the wands
(3) revolving intake and the hose and wand rest on top of the machine so the user did not have to reach down to pick up the wands every time.
(4) could be tipped down using the hose and used as tank cleaner on ANY of the 4 sides
(5) throw-a-way Sanibag bag and the user DID NOT have to bend down to remove or replace or even to check the bag or shake out a dust bag
(6) seal for the used bag so no dust escapes when you replace.
(7) cord can be wound on any of the sides of the machine
(8) matching tools with the rollers on the rug tool for easy movement on the carpet
(9)combination floor tools that uses fuller brush and also has felt buffing pad for wood floors.
(10) step on power switch that can be used in the vertical or horizonal postition
(11) attacha- kit to hold all the tools either on the machine or hung in the closet and could be attached to any side of machine
(12)She could not believe how quiet the machine ran after 62 years!
It was so much fun showing all the features and this was on such an old machine.

Works of ART

Hi Guys What works of art quality and the list could go on. todays vacuum plastic, plastic what a shame that things are made that way. Last month we had to get a new washer W.P. any way the guys had to use a hand truck to take out the old washer. Carried the new one on their back. They said if you get ten years out of this one you will be lucky. So i guess not only quality on vacuums has gone down it is on everything. Doug

Thanks John. Did you notice Duane and Michael working on my grandmother's little Hoover? It went to it's new home with Michael.
I made SURE we got at least ONE shot of a Hoover so you could read the thread!
We did have a great time and it was the first time Tom had been exposed to several vac collectors at one time. I think he was in shock but he made it to the dining table.
He knows Tania,Fred Nelson,Fred S.and some others in the club, BUT never on a steady 4 day course of NOTHING but vac talk. It was great.

This was such a nice 3 day gathering with friends. Rob,Michael,Tania, and I had so much fun. Tania and I was treated with two great vacuum collections that Rob and Michael show us at there homes. Rob has a great collection of Air-ways, Rexair and many others. Michael has a great collection of Hoovers uprights his GE and Compacts and many others. We went Ft. Wayne to Allen County Sweeper Co. and other vacuum stores. We spent some time with Michael to get some things done for the convention. It seems to me that my truck is empty when I get here, but it is full when I go home. For now one I am not taking Tania to any Vacuum shops. She seems to find some very good vacuums that are one of a kind and always in very good shape.

I still find it interesting that people, well "members" in Indiana aren't still invited to participate in the mini meets.

Makes me feel so glad to have spent what little money I do have on membership to the VCCC.

ENOUGH, there will be no unnecessary drama on this website. This is not the first time you've posted something like this Ben BUT IT IS THE LAST TIME. If you have an issue like this again you will take it to private email. If I catch you posting anything like this again it will be your last post ever on Vacuumland. This is your final warning.

Norm,
By gosh you are right on. I heard that same story about how much the Air-Way cost but when you think she only had 2 Air-Ways in 61 years, they were a bargain. I also kept her Hoover Dail-A-Matic and it was 40 years old. All 3 still work!

Sam,
I didn't think ANYONE would know what Tell City Furniture was or that it came from Southern Indiana. All hard rock maple. It is built like a battleship. There is no staples or fiberboard even on the backs of the dressers. I know it is WAY out of style but I am keeping it!
If you know what Tell City is you may also know about Cushman Maple from Vermont. I kept my grandparents bedroom set and their sofa and chairs in my family room. They bought it in the 1930's. Just like the old Hoover's-with a little care they last and last.
Also funny note, Michael Turner and I both have our dining room furniture passed down and it is in a very similar 40's style in Mahagany and both came from the SAME store in Indianapolis.

Air-way model 66

dysonman1's profile picture
Rob: Your Air-Way model 66 is GORGEOUS. I remember bestowing a blue ribbon on it when I was President of the VCCC (many years ago). I know you had it rebuilt directly at the factory.

Here's a shot of my Model 66, along with its optional "Wheel A Way" carrier/cart. I was very lucky to find a machine with the perfect original hose, not one drop of air leakage.

Tom,
I have neer seen the wheeled carrier for the 66. I notice yours has a slightly different switch and bottom plate. Tania had a new Silencer cloth for my machine when Duane changed the motor. Those original GE motors have a very unique sound when they shut down but amazing how quiet they run compared to todays vacuum motors.

Also thanks for posting the picture of the Electrolux with the first power nozzle. Our neighbor had one of the first ones. I was just shocked when she invited us over to see her new Electrolux with 2 motors! She bought hers in summer of 1960 and hers had the SAME removable clips for the hose.

Yes Rob, I am quite familiar with Tell City and their hard rock maple. My favorite finish is Andover # 48. My grandparents sold it through their furniture and appliance store along with century furniture and GE/Hotpoint.
Tell City is a bit hard to find throughout the Pittsburgh area but it's out there. Ethan Allen maple was more popular here when Early American was in.

However I have never heard of cushman maple.

That was a genuine Air-Way optional attachment. It was called the "Wheel-A-Way". The model 66 was the first to offer this option. The model 77 had a "Wheel-A-Way" as well, but it's styled completely differently. There was also a Commercial Wheel-A-Way that turned the model 77 into a commercial machine. If you'd like to see the pictures, I can post them.

The Carrier is very nice. Would that have been sold for commerical use?

Rob, I do think you were correct about that, as I'm also a huge Buick fan. I believe in the past we both had early 90s Centurys. I'm now in a 2000 Park Avenue for daily driving and a 2008 Lucerne CXL, both of which I really love.

I believe the Wheel-A-Way lends itself very well for commercial use, but it most definitely was an optional attachment that any salesman could add onto a sale, or use to close a sale.

Air-Way model 77 Wheel-A-Way

dysonman1's profile picture
This is a shot of the model 77's Wheel-A-Way carrier. The machine is horizontal, unlike the carrier for the model 66, but it does stand about six inches off the ground. Too tall to be practical for use - it tended to tip over. This is the household version of the Wheel-A-Way. Note that the wands and attacha-carrier can also be stored on the cleaner. This machine is in our overhead storage area for the overflow from the Museum waiting for the Vacuum Collector's Convention in June here in St. James, MO. I'm hoping to give away at least 40 vacuums that are duplicates.

Commercial Wheel-A-Way for the Air-Way 77

dysonman1's profile picture
This is the Wheel-A-Way that turns a model 77 into a Commercial model 77. The machine slides horizontally into the middle, and everything rides along. The machine is protected on all four sides. I need to clean this one up and place a model 77 in it before the Vacuum Collector's Convention, here at the Museum, in June.

Glad to have seen a 1911 NSS Pig-does it still work?Do you have a bag for it?Figure the new bags should fit. Then you could try it.Tried to get a 100th Anniversary Pig-but the dealer said they were no longer available.I have a Pig like the 1970 one.Bought mine new from Daycon Janitorial Products in Wash DC in the 70's.And on the Daycon truck was a fleet of Pigs to be delivored to the White House! The Pig is on the GSA products list(GSA product supplier to the government)A government agency.Another of my Pigs has the "Pigtail" power outlet for a powernozzle-again mine like what you have shown.I no longer use the power nozzle-I made up a "Tandem" vac using my Kirby Sentria and the NSS Pig.Just put the Kirby hose on the Kirby in place of the bag-the connect the Kirby Hose to the Pig's hose.Great combination. When I dig up my Royal hose-will try this with one of my Royal metal uprights. The other three Pigs I have I bought from Wilco in Danville,Va.Daycon no longer carried NSS.A freind of mine from Danville suggested I try Wilco-sure enough they are a NSS dealer. If anyone wants to sell a 100th Ann Pig I would be interested-same with a 1911 model.

Thank you very much for the pictures of the Eureka, nice looking cleaner and its seems like the styling detail was carried on to the floor or is the rug nozzle in the carrier. I presume that this is late 1940s/early 1950s.

I was aware of the "can of ham" Eureka and models of similar vintage but not of this earlier model.

The NSS powernozzle should be still available-the nozzle is designed to be used with either the NSS Pig or the NSS Designer Dry canister vacuums. You can check NSS Enterprizes website for info about the powernozzle kit and where a NSS dealer is near you.I figure it must be still around since Dysonmans Pig came with one.
