Has any one ever switched a plastic Hoover Convertible base to an old style metal base? Also do Hoover plastic bases break or last a long time?

It certainly can be done.

And, with NORMAL use and care, the plastic base will last indefinitely. They are lighter, etc. I personally am more fond of ther metal ones. But, there is a fair representaion of "plastic HOOVERS" here in the house.

plastic bases

I have never switched one.As above these can be great vacs with normal care. But the weak spot seems to be at rear sides where handle bail mounts.Cracks seem to begin when handle is pulled without releasing foot pedal first or other stress. Also neglected brush bearing with string/hair build up can have friction and heat that will melt housing at brush ends.

I have had two plastic bases that were cracked. They made good parts donors. The hoods from both of them are now on metal bases. I also have a half dozen plastic Convertibles that are in good shape. That makes a 25% failure rate over about 35 years. Lets see anything you can buy now beat those numbers.

The reason for asking is I have a Hoover made- Advantage vacuum from the mid 80's. I love the thing and way it to out last me. The one thing that bugs me is the plastic base. I worry about it cracking or breaking even with normal nice use. So I'm curious about finding a metal version of the base and swapping.
