Here is my Hoover Turbopower 3 Autosense U2880 that I got from another Vscuumlander (Dave Tranter) he was having a vacuum clear out and was getting rid of four vacuum cleaners so I jumped in straight away when I saw he had a Turbopower 3 so I went and picked it up and here we are now.

The Hoover Turbopower 3 was released in 1994  and replaced the Turbopower 1000 and the Turbopower 2's (initially), I suspect that Hoover didn't plan on making the Turbopower 3's (I could be wrong) as I imagine it was influenced by the Dyson DC01, with the stair cleaning hose).

The Turbopower 3's original line consisted of three models, which was this one - U2880 which was TOL which had Autosense and permabag and was in a shade of lagoon green, metallic  - the MR U2878 which had Autosense and was in the same shade of lagoon green metallic - the BOL U2876 which was the basic model and had just a bag light this was in a shade of deep chambertin red.

The Turbopower 3 was an improvement of the Turbopower 2 because it had a much longer hose that reached right to the top of the stairs, which Hoover boasted and it also had improved airflow, the hose was not just longer but it was wider and had a nice ergonomic hand grip unlike the Turbopower 2's straight hand grip. The Turbopower 3 had improved airflow over the Turbopower 2 because it had a wider hose and a bigger airflow ducting inside the bag compartment, where the pre motor filter fits, it was double the size, so more airflow could be pulled through the machine much quicker because of these two factors.

I hate to say and should not really complain as it was free but it was filthy and I mean FILTHY, I understand Dave intentionally didn't wipe it down for a better after picture, plus, he never really did anything with it in the (roughly) five years in which he owned it.

The motor bearing were terribly dry and I don't think Turbopower 2/3/1000 motors are serviceable other than the carbon brushes, so I couldn't get to the bearing behind the fan to lubricate it. They were awfully dry so I just took the motor out of my spare Turbopower 1000 which is ok anyway because the Turbopower 3's were 1000 watts, the bearings in that motor are a little dry but not to bad so I will stick with it until I can get hold of another 1000 watt motor.

Here is is anyway, I shall start with the before pictures and then the after pictures, obviously. :P haha

Autosense

Which I have heard it being slower at sensing grit than a Turbo 2 because of the wider, longer hose but I have found my Turbo 3 to sense just the same as the Turbo 2. If you have a "lazy Autosense" try gving the sensor has a good wiping as a build up of dirt will decrease it's sensitivity.

Redesigned hose/tool cady to fit the longer hose better and you can see the upper hook on the back of the handle to make up for the hoses extra length. You may also notice that the lower cable hook/carry handle is bigger and a bit different.

If you didn't notice before it has a little rubber "thing" attached to the hose which you hook on the corresponding bottom hook to keep the machine from toppeling over when cleaning upholstory, you do need to remove it from the hook when cleaning stairs.

Turbopower 3 introduced this "stair grooming" upholstory tool which the Turbopower 2's didn't have. You see this tool was put on Purepower cleaners too.

Speaking of stairs...

You can see that the hose does indeed stretch to the top of the stairs as Hoover claimed.

The bag ring is a brilliant idea! I can't believe manufacturers don't have one on every machine, or any product for that matter.  Engineering regression!

Glad you're enjoying your 'new toy'

Hope it was worth the journey....

Re: dry bearings. Is this a frequent problem with vacuum cleaners?? My background is in Engineering, and if there IS a way to get to a bearing for lubrication, I will find it... If anyone has such a motor (in any condition) local to me, I'd like to examine it...

All best

Dave T

What on earth is 'Autosense' anyway?? Why detect grit??

Mystfied...

Autosense

I think it is worth remembering first and foremost that two of Hoover's key philosophies was to have as many gimmicks as possible, and to offer much confusion as possible in respect of the choices of cleaner available.

In principle, the idea of autosense is that in normal use the motor runs at a wattage sufficient for cleaning carpets. When grit was detected, Hoover decided it would be useful to boost the wattage so as to aid cleaning. Were this not enough, the user had the choice of overriding the autosense feature and running the cleaner at full power.

Now, when autosense was confined solely to the two cleaners in the Turbopower 1000 range, it all made sense, as the 1000 watt motor was higher than that of the 800 watt motor in the Turbopower 2 series. But when autosense was introduced to the Turbopower 2 cleaners, the 800 watt standard motor power dropped right down when using autosense. This is confusing for me. Either the Turbopower 2 cleaners were needing an 800 watt motor, or they weren't. Effectively, if the autosense models were capable of cleaning at below 800 watts (autosense mode) then the standard basic Turbopower 2 cleaner should have had, say, a 600 watt motor, because as it was it very much looked like the basic 800 watt cleaner was a better choice as it was designed to be used at 800 watts all the time, unlike the autosense which potentially ran at three different wattages.

Of the autosense cleaners which came to me for repair, I did note that most of them seemed to arrive with boost button pressed down, suggesting that the user preferred full power all of the time.

Here is a video I made a while ago using my Turbopower 2 Autosense but the Autosense works the same on all models, this video shows what happens when it detects more dirt than what was already being picked up. When the Autosense has grit or big particles strike it's sensor it boosts the power to it's medium power setting and when no more extra dirt/grit hits the sensor anymore, it returns to its low or economy power setting.

These are the exact words from the Turbopower 2 demo video..

alexhoovers94's profile picture
The revolutionary Autosense system monitors the level of dirt in your carpet and automatically adjusts the power, grit particles strike a tiny sensor and an electronic brain boosts power where it's needed, and then returns Turbopower 2 to it's economy setting, saving energy.
