Hi Folks

I have just purchased a Hoover U1012 on ebay.

It works great but :-

The Handle Release is broken
The Top Fill Part of the tube is missing
I cannot work out for the life of me how to get the motor out to clean it up and get to the upper carbon brush :-(

Does anyone have any of the above parts

Hi, I got your email, I just hadn't got the chance to reply, but I saw this thread (assuming it's you) so I will see if I can help you now.
I think parts such as the fill tube are obsolete but you can usually pick up a 1980's Hoover Junior of eBay really cheap, all the 80's Juniors have top fill tubes, I assume you know but what you are looking for is this...

The handle release on mine doesn't work very well, if you try and push it around in the "locked" upright position it stays in that position for a few seconds and then drops down to operating position, all Juniors do this, because the 60's and 70's ones are getting on for 30-40 years and the metal on metal handle release has just worn from constantly being pressed and tugged on over the years.
You may be able to get a "new one" from a vacuum shop as they usually sell the refurbished Juniors but I am not certain on that, plus it will be bright white and not the yellowy creamy colour of the U1012.

If you need to get to the motor, there are four screws that need to be taken out. Fist take out the two screws that hold on the black bottom cover, then you will need a VERY long Phillips head screw driver (if you don't have an extra long one it just won't work, no innuendo!) and then unscrew those four screws, the motor will just lift out.
When you have the motor out (from memory) you should just be able to unscrew three long flat head screws that have a bolt on the back, the motor casing should start to break into two when the screws are out, just remember that the screw and bolt that goes in at the rear of the motor is slightly longer than the other two, I think. The carbon brushes are held in by two little plates and there are two little flat head screws that hold them down in place, when those little screws are out the carbons will just spring right out.

Hope this helps you,

the 60's and 70's ones are getting on for 30-40 year

Sorry my Maths wasn't top notch there :P I should of said the 60's and 70's Juniors are getting on for 40-50 years and some of the 60's type junior are even a bit older 55 years old now if you had one from 1958.

It appears that the outer shell of my 1012 has been painted white.

The plastic under the paint is creamy yellow ?

Would this mean that it has had its cover replaced at some point.

I have managed to get the motor out.

I have cleaned it out, It was full of dust and nasty black rubbish :-(

The Rotor appears to be in good condition,

I have ordered replacement bearings for the machine (front and rear motor bearings)
New carbon brushes were ordered too

The carbon brushes are different lengths,

The one at the top of the motor is shorter (original) the lower one which is accessible under the black cover is longer, Does that mean someone changed it at some point ?

The label was also covered in white paint, The Serial Number is U101210105142

Yours is from January 1981, didn't even know they still made this model in 1981! It certainly isn't from 1971! top fill was not out then, are you sure it is a U1012?

It must be from January 1981 then...

alexhoovers94's profile picture
As I said before, it is certainly not from 1971, it is top fill the models in 1971 were all bottom fill and anyway this model didn't come out until 1976. I believe this was the firt upright from Hoover to use the "U" at the beggining of the model number.
