An Electrolux model XXX from a good friend. It has a replacement hose and no attachments but I still love it. It's a little dirty but it will clean up fine. If anyone is interested I'll post before and after pics.

Model XXX

Joe,

Congrats on your "new" acquisition! I absolutely LOVE the XXX Electrolux vacuums! I have several in my collection, including one I sort of "modified", but I like each and every one of them! I can't wait to see your machine, just a quick question, did it have the round runners on it, or the flattened out runners? Out of the many in my collection, I only have one with the flattened out runners on it and the one-piece exhaust port door, and I have read that this is one of the earlier model xxx. Anyway, I digress, I can't wait to see it!

Steve

Runners

jfalberti's profile picture

I haven't had a chance to really check it out yet, but I will when I get home tonight.  It looks to be in really good condition, and isn't dented or beat up.  I'll check the runners and post some pictures tonight.  The hose definitely isn't original, and isn't in great shape, but I think it is a newer Lux hose.  You'll see it tonight and maybe someone will have a clue what model the hose was made for.  Wow.  This has been a vacuum week.  First the Constellation I've been looking for to match my Convertible and Dial A Matic, and now the XXX.  Who knew the Easter Bunny delivered vacuums too!  :-)

Here are a few before pictures

jfalberti's profile picture
I'm not a great photographer, so here goes ...

It's pretty rough, but no rust and a few minor dings.

The cord

jfalberti's profile picture
Is original, and the wall end has been replaced. The cord itself is rough, and is frayed on the machine end. I'm gonna replace it.

The bag is in good shape

jfalberti's profile picture
But the bag door hasn't been opened in years. The bag was stuck to the gasket, and the door gadget is dried out and also needs replaced. This is inside the bag chamber.

There is no model plate or

Serial number that I can find. Here is some text from the bag door. It's hard to read, but it says Electrolux Corp, New York, New York and San Francisco CA.

A few of the hose

I know the hose is a replacement. Does anyone know what model this hose would have gone with?

As a whole

jfalberti's profile picture
The machine needs some TLC, and I'm gonna start working on it this weekend. I know Electrolux made this model forever. Anyone have any idea about when this one was made? Any info anyone could give me on it would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, awesome. Looks like it will clean up nicely. I'd love to get my hands on one of these.

Model XXX

Great survivor of a true classic. The inside pic seems to prove no abuse on what should still be a good vac.The serial number would be stamped on ring the bag door fits against.Probably covered with dirt for now.The side trim can be removed for cleaning by pulling front/rear clips straight down. All will clean nicely and handles were once common replacement items although some were 'wrong' color.Vac is probably about 1950 or so.Hose type would be from Golden J era through Marquise.Color would indicate years but seems faded and not great pic here.I would say 82-84 but that would have light gray handle to match Silverado.Or handle could have been chaged. These hoses were for the very few that wanted deluxe Elux without power nozzle and replacement for XXX-L.

Nice XXX. It's almost impossible to tell the time this was made, as there were so many little changes that were not even noticable to the general public. There were two versions of this model. Pre-war and post-war and for a few months the model that was intended to replace it, the model XX (20) but the XXX was too popular, so the XX was scrapped. The pre-war XXX had flat runners, the leatherette was a dark gray, and the under belly was painted a very dark gray, almost black. There were also different air vents on the back cover (blower end). As the years went by, the leatherette became a light gray, and the paint on the belly was a light blue. My guess is that you have a machine from 1947-1950. (see photo). Certain things stayed the same, the cord was always black, as was the power switch. and the red background on the nameplate, unlike the model LX that went from the name Electrolux in red, on an egg yolk yellow background, to a chrome one.

The hose went through the same color changes matching the leatherette, but there was no suction regulator in the hose handle. Trim on the attatchments also matched the leatherette. As for the rug nozzle, it went through a myriad of changes, while the other tools and wands remained the same from the model X11 (12) through the model E.

See the thread Tools for model XXX in archives here in Vintage to look at the tools. The Cord winder, tool holder called the 'Companion' and the garment aire bag.

The man most responsible for the model XXX was Gustave E. Lofgren, head engineer of Electrolux. He bagan when the factory opened in Old Greenwich, Connecticut in 1933. Up to this time Electrolux vacuum cleaners were made in Stockholm, Sweeden, and exported all around the world. The XXX was the first 'all American made Electrolux.'

I hope this helps, check out the patents listed inside the front cover and the info stamped on the ring near the place where the bag is inserted.

Alex Taber,
Electrolux/Kirby historian.

That is indeed a nice looking machine! Thanks for posting the photos of it, with a little cleaning and polishing on it, that machine will look amazing! Handles, power cords, and hoses are still readily available. I purchased my replacement parts from Hesco, but I see them on eBay quite often as well, along with NOS bags, filters, etc.

If you would like to dig a little deeper into the Electrolux Company's history, Alex Taber is the person to ask, if he hasn't already, see if he cares to send you a copy of the History of Electrolux. He gave me a copy of it and I still catch myself reading it in my down-time! He is extremely knowlegable when it comes to the history of these amazing machines, and I for one am grateful as sometimes I find the history and beginnings of a company to be more beneficial than the actual machines produced....well I should say it makes me have a deeper appreciation for their products!

Finally, here is a photo of my Electrolux XXX that I rebuilt and modified with a new motor and my interpretation of a "storage box" to hold it. Good luck with fixing/restoring your XXX, they are absolutely amazing machines!

Here's my XXX

papasvacs's profile picture

Just like the one my parents and grandparents had when I was growing up.  It resides in Florida now and is my daily driver on the first floor.  The hose is, of course, replacement but is Electrolux product.  Cord is generic replacement.

Love it!  So quiet and powerful.  So many memories each time I run it.

I've always thought the Lux XXX was one of the vacs that ALL collectors should have. It will look great once you get it cleaned up & replace the handle & cord. Here's a pic of mine.
