I emailed Doug and he's having problems logging on with his old i.d. so he asked that I post this.

Hi Everyone. I got Pete's message. Guess it would be easiest to start from the beginning and work through. Electrolux began in Canada in 1932 with a small sales force selling the Model XII which was being imported from Sweeden. By 1934 sales and the sales force had grown to a size that warranted a factory being built here in Canada to produce the XII. The XII continued to be produced till 1939 when the factory was retooled and the model ZB30 went into production (an interesting note on this period is that some of the Model Z24 were also imported from England at this time and sold as a step down model) In 1939 the ZB30, which was a Canadian modification of an Sweedish design, went into production with the model XII (now in the same grey as the 30) still being made as a step down model. Shortly there after vacuum production stopped as the factory was retooled to make small motors etc for the war effort.
After the war production of the ZB30 resumed. In 1949 the first version of the alligator skin ZB55 was introduced with the second appearing in 1951. (The first version has the runners attached to separate points on the body like the 30 - the second they go right into the name plate). Also around 1950 an optional cord reel (made by Belden in the US) was introduced. In 1953 the 3rd and final version of the ZB55 came out - this time with a blue covering and blue parts (including the new style crevice tool). At the same time they introduced the step down model Z54 (red ends and only the cheaper US flip over parts) and a delux model Z57 (Brown wih cord reel).
In 1957 the factory was again retooled and the 80 series went into production. Following the cheap - standard - delux idea introduced in 1953 the new models were the ZB83 (cheap), ZB86 (standard - had a cord reel) and ZB88 (delux with mechanical brain ) In 1961 the design changed slightly with bumpers being added to the machines. At this time they also discontinued the 83 and began producing the 86 with the manual cord winder or, for $30 more, the cord reel. Shortly thereafter they also began importing the PN1, as an optiona accessory, from the US in red and cream to match the machines. The outlet for the PN was placed in the handle as it made it easy to retrofit earlier 80 series to use the new power nozzle. Also in this period (61-67) Electrolux Canada Introduced the telescopic wand (which didnt catch on in the US)

In late 1967 the models 87 (cheap) and 89 (delux) were introduced. The first machines used a standard hose with cord on the outside as did the 88 but soon modifications began to appear. The first modification was a handgrip with a trigger switch to turn on and off the PN. Shortly there after the first powerhose appeared (very dark green with a gold tracer and the same metal end as the standard hose). By 1969/70 the power hose became standard with the machines (It should be noted that these machines now bore the 89E or 87E designation instead of ZB87 or ZB89). The 89 also had 3 different power nozzles during its reign. Starting with the PN2 (Canadian designation for the lime green -US made PN1). The next 2 Power nozzles - the PN3 and PN4 were a strictly Canadian design. The PN3 was lime green with a dark green bumper and featured a controll which allowed the user to lower the brush when it became worn. The PN4 was basicall the same in dark green with a lime green bumper but did away with this controll.
In 1973 the factory was again retooled and the all plastic Ap100's and AP's went into production.
Another interesting note. On all Canadian made machines (up to the 2100 at which time production switched to the US) you can tell the manufacture date from the serial number. Eg: if it is a 89 (made from 67 to 73) and the first number of the serial number is 1 then it was made in 1971.
During this time period various imported Electroluxes were sold both from the US and England as well. Either to test out new ideas and see how the Candian public would accept them(eg: the US LX and E for the paper bags and cord reel) or to keepthe sales force going when the factory was either shut down due to mechanical problems or strikes.
If anyone wants more information (Or parts - I have a ton of them) give me a yell at mjdkas@hotmail.com as I rarely have time to check these boards.

Thankyou very much, Doug and Pete. Immediately printed and 3 ring bindered in the reference file. First chance I get I'm checking my serial numbers. Dave.

Btw, Pete, now that clouds are rolling in on Sunday and Monday spoiling my boat day, what are the chances you are free either of those days for a visitor from Stratford? I'll email tonight when back from work.

lux cylinders

Hi Doug Pete,
interesting stuff what fine machines these are .I love them as you know, and my mom would always say her z55 was "worth every penny of the Ł28 it cost her in 1951" i was wondering you said about the new kind of crevice tool did it replace the rubber one i talked about in my thread or are you not familiar with this tool?

Si, re the crevice tool, from Doug in M Jaw

Hi Si:

The Rubber Crevice tool that came with the European machines was never used here in Canada. Our model 30's came with a metal Crevice tool then the model 55 replaced it with a fiber one which was replaced in 1953 by a plastic one whos design is still used by Aeris today.

I've never even seen a rubber crevice tool. Anyone have a photo?

I just recently find a neat old item, a Kirby crevice tool that's metal, and 3 ft long! I have seen it in old Kirby literature but had never actually found one. It's painted glossy black.

Thank you Pete

Wow,, this is great that you are willing to check out the serial numbers of the luxes... very kind and helpful of you to offer that.

rubber crevice tool

Yes the rubber crevice tool was made out of about half inch thick rubber as i remember. It was slightly shorter than the plastic or metal jobbies and just straight with no narrowing. The cleaning end was cut off at an angle and end that fitted onto the wand was oval and you had to squeeze it between thumb and forefinger to get it on. 2 sets of lux "tramlines" down each side and they split very easily. Once a slight split started it went all the way down and that was it. Maybe if todays superglues were around then you might have had a chance but i doubt it . Not very successful but part of the lux history! Ours was in biege to our z55 my nans was in dark grey to her z60(i think it was a z60 ? like the z25 but a bit more modern red leatherette and all in 1 up and over bag end cap clip )

I've posted this before but seeing as we have quite a few new people I'll post it again.
This is the sold in Canada only Electrolux Tri-Vac from the 70's and 80's, not sure of the dates. The handle unclips and slides out and it becomes a handvac. They're very well made. When the handle is removed and you lay it down it looks like a miniature full sized Electrolux I think. It also came in a nice blue with gray highlighting. I had one but regretfully Ebayed it last year. What was I thinking. It uses paper bags that were discontinued but are again available at Aerus dealers, whew.

I'm unsure if the US's Turbo Rug Washers (or the UK's Turbo Polishers), Little Luxes, Little Pro, Sidekicks, or Sidekick IIs were sold in CA during this period.

The first version of the Air-Powered Polisher & Scrubber (U.S. 1949 XXX ~ 1956 E-Automatic) was sold in Canada and called the Junior polisher. See below.

Then the second version of the polisher, originally called the Turb-O-Tool, was also sold in Canada. Again, see below. (I actually have one of these that I found on eBay some years ago, sold by a seller in upstate New York.)

Interestingly, both versions are shown in an early version of the ZB88 instruction manual. As far as I know, both versions were never sold in the U.S. simultaneously -- once the Turb-O-Tool was introduced in hammertone blue sometime during the run of the E-Automatic, the earlier polisher & scrubber seems to have been discontinued. They were never depicted in the same instruction manual, at any rate.

I also have a later version of a ZB88 manual and neither of the air-powered accessories are displayed or mentioned.

Furthermore, in the earlier manual the electric three-brush machine in polished aluminum is shown and in the later one the machine in matching maroon is shown.

I don't know whether or not any of the later versions of the air-powered attachments with rug-washing setups were sold in Canada. I have a couple of different versions of the ZB89 and AP100 instruction manuals (showing slightly different styles of power nozzles for each model), none of which mention or show any turbo tools. The ZB89 manuals do show the matching electric floor polisher, and the AP100 manuals do show the floor polisher / rug beautifier.

Finally, the two early versions of the air-powered attachments were sold in the U.K., Sweden and Germany. I have specimens of the early Swedish and German versions, and one of the later U.K. version. They were likely sold in other countries as well where Electrolux had a strong market in those days, e.g., Australia and France. But I've never seen any.

(Does any of this make any sense? It's 2:00 p.m. and I really should be asleep ... but once I get going on Electrolux Polishers, I just can't quit -- even though I am half-asleep and half-coherent!!)

Re: Reply 10 Thanks a lot for the info (including the pics)., Charles. No worries about making sense--you did great. Sorry to keep you from getting to bed (haha)!

With regards to the triple brush machine being in two different colors in the early and late versions of the ZB88 manuals I wonder if you have a very early one that displayed a photo of the model BX5 instead of a BX10? I believe it was one of Dave Kerr's replies in another thread that mentioned the BX10 being in his older edition manual and a B20 being in his 1961 manual, so that was one of the considerations for my list. I can imagine that some machines would have had later starts than others, but without company records we'll never know for certain. If you can find some time to post those photos--along with the one showing both air-powered polishers pictured in the same photo--I'd appreciate it.

I will take for granted that Lux Canada never made its own Floor/Furniture Polishers or Turb-O-Tools and that it only carried US imports unless I hear differently from you.

So, did Lux Canada name both air-powered tools "Junior Polisher" or just the first one?

I'm going to check out some other threads to see if I can find photos of the Swedish and German polishers. I'm wondering if they were all that different than the US versions.

I have a Turbo Rug Washer but not a Turb-O-Tool, so I'm keeping my eyes open for one.

_____

All: I'm thinking I was wrong in listing a Trivac during the 1973-76 period. I thought the one pictured in reply 8 in this thread was that one, but I'm thinking now that it's the almond-colored model 1450 and the first Trivac was the model 1421 in 1976.

_____

Charles, I found Dave Kerr's reply regarding the 1961 ZB88 manual:

"The new B style first appears, in Red & Cream, in the 1961 manual for the Eluxomatic ZB 88 with the white bumper surround. It is Model B-20."

Post# 311778 , Reply# 12   1/12/2015 at 19:53 (3,384 days old) by kevin (Livonia)

Charles -

I'm thinking this is the early ZB88 photo to which you referred that had a chrome and polished aluminum-hooded triple-brush machine. To me, it looks like the motor shroud is covered in tan tweed like the BX5. I could be wrong, though. What do you think?

One item I've neglected is the fact that the BX10 was the first combination scrubber/shampooer, and the photo doesn't depict the shampoo function.

Here is Dave Kerr's caption for the pic: "It makes its next appearence in the back pages of the 1957 Elux-o-matic 88 Owners Manual, once again in Chrome, but I suspect also in a matching Red, as Pete has this Polisher-only model version in Red. He'll have to look up the Model Designation Number for us..."

I have a bunch of corrections for you but will have to go through it again tomorrow to makes sure of what I have missed.

To start with - to my knowledge the B-3 Floor polisher was never sold in Canada. According to the Electrolux history book put out by the company in the 1980's the first polisher sold in Canada was the BA5

The model 24 was only sold in 1934-35 as it was brought in with the last model XII's that were made in England before the Canadian factory opened. When the factory opened only model XII's were made.

There was no XIIA in Canada. That is a US model. The Grey model XII - which was only produced till production halted in 1940 for the war was still designated model XII

The models for 1953-1957 were the Z54, ZB55 and Z57. There is no B in the designator for the 54 or 57 as they were Canadian exclusive models. Where as the 55 was found around the world with designators ZA, ZB, ZC and ZE that I know of. Each a different variation of the machine.

In the 49-57 Era the Swedish commercial vacuum model Z33 was also being sold in Canada, although I cant tell you exactly when it started to be sold .

Around 1957 they changed to the Swedish commercial model Z73.

I'll try to find the history book and add the rest of the corrections tomorrow
Doug

Updated List #1 based on Replies 10 & 14 & My Observations::

Re: Reply 14 That's fine, Doug. I would have emailed this to you but didn't want to be a pest.

Which other countries besides Canada, USA, France, UK, Germany, and S. Africa had AB Electrolux divisions? Did any have all the same machines?

agggggg - Then I forgot to note that the model ZB55 v2 (alligator skin) was also brought back as a sale price model in 1955 and the model Z57 was brought back as a sale priced model around 1960 just as the 2100 has been brought back a couple of times for special offers.

Thanks, Doug. I'm glad that the list is revised according to the company records. One thing that caught my eye, though, was that I remember reading somewhere else that the ZB87 and ZB89 had been introduced in late '67. I remembered that, because I'd made a connection with it and the arrival of the green Kirby DS 80 that same year. Just wondering if that was a typo or a company error?

It's like the US's tan Model G that debuted in late '66 instead of '67 that a lot of literature and comments have mentioned.

I know It's not as important as something like world hunger or immigration, but it's the principle of being accurate.

Hey Pete - you never know but all the literature I have says spring of 68 for the introduction of the 87 / 89. LOL depends on who wrote it up I guess.

Another thing is that reply 11, according to Dave Kerr who originally posted it, displays a 1961 manual. In that case the B20 would have been introduced in '61 instead of '66 (as your records seem to indicate).

Also, attached is a photo of a current eBay listing of a Model 2102 Trivac manual (supposedly from 1982 which doesn't fit with the information on the list). It doesn't look like sand and jade either. I wonder, then, if the Model 1450 and 2102 were sold concurrently? The "E" logo with the Canadian maple leaf is cool!

Regarding the term 'jadestone' that you use. I googled that and didn't find anything except a jade-colored stone which appeared as 2 separate words: jade and stone. When I looked up "jade" as a color, though I found lots of stuff. So "jadestone" must have been a color that Lux Canada invented just like "Jamaican Bronze" for the ZB86s and ZB88s. A search of that color was more of golden brown like actual bronze (metallic brown).

Hi Kevin

That is a 1967 revision of the 1961 manual. It has a different cover on it than the original. Therefor the copyright is on the original date but it has additional info. I have all of those manuals. There are 3 different versions with only slight changes in them from 61-67, one of which was to show the new shampooer in the last one. It also showed the new power nozzle - see cover pictures below.

The terms I used for the colours - such as Jadestone, Taupe, Regatta Blue, Jamaica Bronze etc are the companies designators for the shade of the colour on the machines.

The 2102 Trivac was out with the 2100 & LE vacuums which is 1985-87.

And, truth be told, there were actually 4 different instruction manuals put out for the model 88 from 1961 - 1968. The first one was just the previous model 88 manual (no bumpers) but with a new cover on it showing the 88 with bumpers. That was used until they did the photography for the new one. Very often in Electrolux history the manuals didn't totally match the machines until a few months after the new models were introduced. That's why you see some of the old manuals with a sheet of paper with them that "describes the differences between your new machine and the manual enclosed" as seen in the picture below for the B20

thanks for the clarifications, Doug. I wish people wouldn't be so casual in stating years such as the person who has the 2102 manual listed. That sure adds to the confusion.

I like how the overleaf of the B20 is so complete by mentioning such things as its 32 years of existence along with a detailed diagram of the new features on the B20.

As far as the paint/plastic colors I figured you'd found the names in company literature; however, once again the confusion came mainly with the "jade" description by Aerus in its product history list. I guess they don't use any of the other actual color names such as "aqua-marine green" for the Model G, anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to upload all the pics. It's too bad that later manuals are only in black-and-white and no longer include models using the equipment--which makes it more personal.

I hope you have a plan on where your collection, including your documents, will go someday when you're either too old to keep it or when you pass. Without you much of Electrolux (Canada)'s history would be forgotten.

I forgot to comment on the "B" model designation versus "BA" and "BX" of earlier shampooer/polishers. I'm guessing that the single letter identifies it as a Canadian-exclusive machine (as the overleaf states) and like you'd explained with the "Z" designation for Canadian-exclusive vacuum cleaners. Any ideas which countries are denoted by "A" and "X"?

I find it interesting that Electrolux Corporation in the States didn't create its own version of a BA-5 or BX-10 as early as Elux Canada; and that there is no mention of the Model B-3 or B-6 Floor Polishers in owners manuals prior to the introduction of the US Model B-8 in 1959.

Getting back to model prefixes is the use of "AP" in the model designations AP, Model AP100, and so on similar to the use of "ZB" in that it signifies shared body designs with the US? That, of course, would have been after AB Electrolux sold its minority shares in 1968 to Consolidated Foods, Inc.; thus bringing an end to style sharing with the overseas Electrolux models.

As far as I know the AP was a designator used by the Canadian factory to designate that particular body style series. It differentiated the models from the English / European ones (eg. ZC100) which were totally different machines. Same thing with the E designator which was used in the new series starting with the E2000. There is actually some early literature referring to the 2100 as the E2100 and that whole line is still referred to as E Series machines.
