I was on Ebay, and low and behold the first vac I ever saw is for sale. It is a 47 GE upright number AVF17S. My parents bought one of those in 1948. I was born many years later, but they had that vac into the 70's.

I have not seen one since they got rid of it in the 70's when it was traded in for a GE swivel top. It was right around the time GE was leaving the vac world, and they were closing them out. I remember mom paying 24.00 for the canister, with the trade in. It was kind of sad seeing the old one go, since it had been around so long.

It had not been used the last couple of years because in 72 we got our Hoover 1020 Convertible.Since the Hoover did not have very good tool suction, the canister was added.

The GE spent a lot of time in the fix it shop. It had good suction, but it was forever falling apart. The bag, handle, cord, and it would eat belts like crazy.
Yes, the belt would snap and it would suck it right up into the bag.

Tool conversion was awful and they would always fall off. It took 2 people to get the bag apart to empty.

Needless to say, when they finally broke down and got out new Hoover, it was a joy. Throw away bags, easy carpet adjustment, and just slip the converter into the back of the vac.

The Hoover and swivel top went to my brother when they passed away in 77. I wish I had them today, great vacs.

As for seeing the old GE upright, it brought back many good memories of my childhood.
