The person I bought my DAM from has this Lewyt (pictured below) and needs bags for it.  Question is what bag does it take, and are they still available anywhere?  Any history on this model?  It looks interesting.

I Think..

It takes the same Speed Sack that all older Lewyts used, that is one of the mid 60s Shetland built Lewyts, The bags are no longer available, but you can find them in old hardware stores.

Joe....Hans is right, Lewyt bags are no longer available to buy new. However, I have seen packages of Eureka canister bags that were aftermarket, by DVC or Studley, that have said they also fit Lewyt. I believe the Eureka Style B canister bags, for the metal canned ham canisters, are the correct ones....but of course go into your local shop to confirm this. And for anyone who has a Lewyt Big Wheel canister....the owner of my local shop told me before he went out of business that Hoover Type SR bags can be successfully used in place of the original bags.

Good Luck Joe....Rob

@kirbylux77, what is the difference between hoover type  S and type SR bags? I have a lewyt model 55 and been using hoover hepa cloth like grade type s sucessfully however, I decided I'd like to learn the difference between the two. S bags with out rubber inlets wont work like the ones stated above.

Thanks

The SR bag is for the Hoover Duros & Maytag Legacy vacuums, which were made by Sanyo for Hoover. They are paper micro filtration bags. The S bags fit the earlier Hoover canisters....Futura, PowerMax, TurboPower...lots of different names were used, as well as the Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Edition canister & the Hoover Envy canisters.

Gawd I remember my parents had one of those old big wheel Lewyts when I was a kid. The tools went on posts on the back of the vac, the cord would around them, the hose attached with a bayonette lug sort of set up and when you opened the lid the inside was covered in red velvet. Funky old vacuum. No powered brushes for those as I recall.

Lewyt did make a PN version of the Lewyt Big Wheel, which came out in 1957 if I remember correctly, & along with Whirlpool was the two first power nozzle canisters introduced into the marketplace. Actually, it was Lewyt's power nozzle & their design that caused them to be sued & go bankrupt, & SCM Corporation purchasing Lewyt. The Lewyt's design took the power for the power nozzle off the motor windings directly, instead of having a receptacle & a pigtail cord on the electrified hose or external cord to supply power; rather, the current went directly thru the hose, & was sent thru the wands directly to the power nozzle, eliminating the need for a external cord for the power nozzle as well as the pigtail cord & receptacle on the canister end. However, this was a HUGE mistake on their part....when the varnish on the motor windings got hot enough & melted off, the design malfunctioned & caused so much current to go thru the hose & wands, it actually electrocuted people! Which caused lawsuits against Lewyt by owners & their bankruptcy, which I believe happened in 1961 if memory serves correct.

The Lewyt Big Wheel power nozzle was also unique in that it used no flat or geared belt to transfer the power from the motor to turn the brushroll. Instead, there was a plastic geared wheel on the motor, which turned a smaller wheel mounted on the brushroll, which caused it to turn & brush the carpet.
