This has been doing my nut and the mrs's in all night!

Without the field/white bit in the middle, with the casing screwed together it spins beautifully, without the washer...

Can anyone enlighten me on which end it goes? Before or after any bearings etc.

The service manual doesn't explode the motor annoyingly

I am sure that goes on the rear end of the motor, I am sure it goes onto the rear end bearing case and then that spring goes ontop and then the armature.
I am sure it is metal though, not plastic...

Alex that is exactly so. There is a felt washer too. However, it has been a good deal of years since I had one apart so I cannot recall the exact order.

Sounds good. Yep its metal and yes there's a felt washer and spring. Got to get the flipping bearing out though!

Got it together

and it spins now, although not very freely. May wire it up and see if it spins with power, rather than my hand.

Or is this a bad idea and I shouldn't do it?

It should spin very easily by hand.

Ah nuts. I'll wait a few days to clear my head then have another go!

Fixed it!

Had it apart again earlier and still couldn't get it to free up. So I reassembled it and gave either end a good thunk onto the carpet at either end and suddenly it was perfect!

Fitted it into the chassis and wired it up and its lovely! No vids though sadly as my phones broken. Need to give it an extended run to re bed the brushes in too. And re-assemble and polish the thing...

Going to be a fun week!
