Well I was bit again. I had to take these two diamonds-in-the-rough home.

A very nice all original 65 in real dirty shape
A equally nice almost original Hoover 31 ( the handle bail is not original, but I have one!)

Both machines work. They will both be stripped down and cleaned up.

The 2nd picture is after a wipe down with a rag. The Hood isn't terribly warped on the 65, which is good!

A wipe down.

Going to take them apart and send the metal through the dish washer. Not the hood of course!!!

Believe it or not,

This marks the SECOND time I have found both a 65 and 31 in the same place.

Here are the first two I had.... sad isn't it?

Can't wait to see pictures when they're all restored.

There is nothing like finding a vintage Hoover... Or two!

Well I did some cleaning of the 65 today. Stripped it completely down and sent it through a bath of soapy water. Tooth brush and elbow grease, here is what came out.

Still some paint scuffs here and there that a nifty magic eraser will clean up.

Anybody know how to get a yellow stain off the bag? The bag is a little dark, and not as vibrant. Wondering if anyone has any tips on how to brighten it up. I washed it out, and lots of dirt came out, but still some staining remains. Its much more supple now that I washed it too.

All thats left is some mechanical work and touchup painting.

Opps! not the right picture.

You can see the yellow stains just above the handle bail.

I still need to shape the headlight trim a little better. Its not really in place at the moment, since I still have the motor disconnected, and needing to take out again for servicing.

The bag again, with more yellowing.

By the way, the zipper does fully extend, I just didn't pull it down since there is no bag in it yet.

is there a dent in the hood?

I see why the women loved this machine!

Kirbykid,

Its not dented. The early hoovers were highly prone to hood warping because of the very soft plastic that Hoover used to make them. The heat from the motor warped them over time. Thats why you often see cracked, or wavy hoods on models such as the 63, 65, 67, 68 etc.

It wasn't until the late 50s/early 60s that Hoover got it right.

is there any way you can un warp it?

Post# 219683 , Reply# 20   2/18/2013 at 17:10 (4,055 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

Not really. The risk of damaging the hood by trying to heat and shape it is too high.

could you take another hood and paint it to mach?

Post# 219685 , Reply# 22   2/18/2013 at 17:14 (4,055 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

Yes. You can still find the plain white hood for sale from time to time. The pink would be hard to match though.

ok, i got a qestion for all orginal 65 ownders, and hoover e

since ive had my all original 65, ive noticed a difference in the bags. some like Brandon's have a very high tailored collar around the fill tube, before the bag reaches its largest point. but mine, also a two piece handle has a very square low non tailored bag......

ive seen others with this bag as well. i think Kenney Loveland has a one piece handle and this bag (Kenney would you please confirm that??)...and Chad C sold one like that....

hers mine to compare the difference

and the back of the bag......

just see how low and boxy it is...

Yes I have two with the one piece handle. Nice finds!

Had a few minutes to clean the 31 up. It didn't come out as nice as the 65, but looks good! I will have to try and find some touchup paint for the scuffs on the base.

The bag is just beautiful on this machine. Couldn't be nicer.

Still need to service the motor and wire it back up, and replace the handle bail with the other 31 handle bail I have.

Another of the base. You can see the scuffs here. The bumper is relatively nice for the scuffs on the side.

Rear. I really wonder why they put the bottom snap in because its almost impossible to stretch the bag that far.

Post# 219813 , Reply# 29   2/19/2013 at 17:29 (4,054 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

The awesome bag. I like the wide look of the 65. These seem so slim compared to it.

Post# 219814 , Reply# 30   2/19/2013 at 17:32 (4,054 days old) by Brandon_W_T ()

The base. It appears that the paint was sprayed on thin in places. I can see some metal in the deeper parts of the base.

With the 65. When serviced these are going to be two fabulous machines!

wow I never noticed the difference in the 65 bags! Interesting question for some Hoover experts.
Jason, mine has the taller bag
