IMPORTANT!

air-waycharlie's profile picture
if you are COMMITTED to attending, would you please let me know as the number of attendees affects a LOT of the costs.

Several conventions have lost money for the club. We would like to avoid that this year.

So, if you have any inkling of coming or will be there come hell or high water, please let me know here or in an email.

Thanks!

Evan,

You might want your parents to be involved in this and then with the Board. The club has certain regulations for your protection and the protection of the club.

They would't go. They don't like anything involving vacuums. So either i don't go or someone takes me as a guest. But my parents would be fine if someone took me as a guest. as long as they can get to know the person a bit first.

Please explain a slang term

caligula's profile picture
While I'm not Jewish, my step dad was, and I heard a lot of slang terms as a kid, so I know what a sclemeel is, but don't know the meaning of schlemazle. I know it was used in the theme song of Lavern and Shirly. I'd love to add it to my list of terms.

Hello my darling! Sorry not to respond sooner to your other posts but between the whoop-de-do at Tarantula Arms and my flying schedule and trying to get some rest...........well, time gets by.

I'm so glad y'all will be coming to Milwaukee. Just about two weeks ago, Tania, Duane and I did a walk through with the hotel and it is great. It will serve the club and the convention very well.

We are anticipating a nice size crowd and we feel we have put together a nice event encompassing Tania and Duane's collections. It will be great to see you both and I am counting down the days along with Duane's counter in an earlier post.

My best,
Charlie

Party People?

air-waycharlie's profile picture
John Chan, we invented the term, "Party People"! (They always tell me I had a good time.........)

There are going to be great vacuums for sale. I am bringing a near mint Hoover Dimension 1000 for the raffle, (we have a raffle too), that belonged to a dear deceased member, Terry Lattz. I am also bringing a NIB Filter Queen 31 with power nozzle that has been used in my house less than 5 times. Due to age, I did replace the brush roll and belt. It is a beauty and WILL be for sale!

If I have enough room, I may bring a NIB Lux upright in gold that matched the Golden J with a supply of bags and it WILL be for sale!

I know of others but don't want to let the cat out of the bag. You should plan to attend and see everything first hand. It is an experience you will not forget!

Charlie

PS--Thanks John for the update on the PA delegation! See you in June.

You read correctly.

aeoliandave's profile picture
An organized Convention like this is certainly not free.

The $75.00 Registration FEE for members, same for guests of members, for 4 days, some banquette meals and other included events is a relative bargain but these days Hotels with suitable convention facilities are expensive even at $99 + tax a night. But once you arrive there's free parking and wireless internet and free run of the Hotel facilities like the pool, jacuzzi, gym (if you can find the time in a jam-packed schedule beginning at 8:30 AM until midnite, nightcaps and bedtime).
Ancillary expenses are some meals not included, road tolls if you take that fast route and of course, gasoline costs if you drive.
It takes a certain commitment and financial wherewithal to attend a convention and I would never be able go unless I could drive myself and enjoy the vacation journey.

Dave

Time to bump this up again. I know who has registered and has made a hotel reservation and who has not. I know plenty of folks that are coming and have done neither.

Do I have to start naming names? Please register is you are attending and get your room before the rate changes. It helps the planning committee a LOT if we know how many are attending.

Please, please, please, for once, follow through and follow up!

... so sadly this will be yet another Convention that I'll have to miss.  Hopefully, however, I'll be able to catch next year's -- especially as rumor has it that it will be in Cleveland (unless I heard wrong?).  That would be a cinch for me to get to!  Meantime, here's wishing all who'll be attending Milwaukee a most excellent time!

I found out today.................

air-waycharlie's profile picture
that as of today, April 28th, we have 17, yes, SEVENTEEN, members registered for the 2013 convention.

I will be talking to Duane and Tania about this, but it would seem to me if we have less than 40 members registered by the cutoff date of May20th, then maybe we should cancel.

Too much work and planning has gone into making the 2013 Milwaukee Convention for only 17 people to show up. We even have a new-in-the box vacuum as part of the raffle! Registered attendees, (registering BEFORE the convention and not at the door), are eligible for 5 free tickets for this vacuum as I last heard from the Board. (This may be subject to change.)

It would cost the club less to cancel than to put on a convention for 17 people. Unless the numbers change fast and soon, the 2013 Milwaukee Convention will be a pipe dream.

Billy Lipman and I are coming. I just made the hotel reservation. Very easy at the number you gave us of 414-481-2400. A nice man named Joel helped me. He also told me that I could reserve the room at the same rate on WEDNESDAY, since I was part of the VCCC group. So, rather than struggle to get to the Convention at a reasonable time on Thursday (it's almost never before 7 PM when you come from the West Coast), I will arrive a day early and be relaxed.

One question though: I kinda lost my way trying to find the PayPal button for registration. I found the one for JOINING the VCCC, but where is the button to pay for registration? I found the registration form, but not the button.

Help me...I am old and feeble.....John Lucia

Question / Display vacs

I only have one vacuum cleaner that may be worth showing off.... a little... maybe.
Do I bring it along? Is there some place to put it for viewing if someone wishes?

It is true that paid members may bring up to, but not to exceed, 12 vacuums. The meeting room opens on Thursday at 3 PM and members may place their vacuums in that room first come first serve. The vacuums can be displayed table top or floor level depending on space availability and when you get there.

Some areas will be reserved for Board Members, For Sale vacuums, Raffle vacuums and Free vacuums. Other areas will be reserved for long time voting categories of: "Historical Significance", "Most Original", and "Best Restored". There is criteria for those categories that will be explained.

Members vacuums can be totally vintage or newer vacuums depending on their preference and age group. Just remember, a convention is about members and vacuums and vacuums and members. It is a fun learning experience with the opportunity to make new friends. That is how the mini-meets come into happening.

According to Dave Olsen and others.........

air-waycharlie's profile picture
We are now beyond the halfway mark of how many we expect in Milwaukee. I spoke with the hotel today and the menu has been upgraded for the awards banquet dinner on Saturday night.

Also, items have been added for the Thursday opening reception. Duane and Tania are ordering ribbons and trophies this week as well as getting other items that are needed for the convention.

Start polishing, replacing belts and changing bags. It seems the convention will be a big success. Next week, a list of names of those attending will be posted here. Will your name be on it? You have several days to register and not get left behind.

The energy is building............

All things are coming together!

Today was a bad day for me but turned out to be much better  at the end of my day. At 6:30 am our  basement was flooded and had a lot of water on the floor and on some of the carpet area. The 15 year sump pump burnt out. 2 hours later I installed my new sump pump that I had for these days when things go bad . So today I went to Tania's  house to get some things in order. We picked out some trophies and blue ribbons for all the good vacuums cleaners and contest soon to come at the 2013 convention.  Today Tania and I went to a place in Racine where I am having 4 vacuum cleaners buffed out.  We are both getting real excited for all the good and fun times we are going to have. So get ready and get your vacuums cleaned up and win a blue ribbon or a vacuum cleaner trophy. We  can't wait to see all of our friends and their vacuum cleaners.

Convention Registration Form

air-waycharlie's profile picture
Information for filling out and sending the convention registration form has been posted under a new thread to make things easy.

Remember, the cut off date for the hotel special room rate is May 20th--FOURTEEN days away. The hotel has a limited block of rooms. The regular rate is $120 to $150. Don't wait.

If you have been thinking, "I'll get to it, I have plenty of time", NO, you don't! Air fares will increase dramatically and the rooms will be gone.

In the words of Aunt Bee: "Get to it!"

Good News!

air-waycharlie's profile picture
The Board of the VCCC has confirmed that a NIB, (new in the box), vacuum will be part of the raffle. It will be a high end brand to be announced here later.

For those registering prior to May 20th, you will receive 4 FREE raffle tickets.

There will be a special on raffle tickets as in the past with a wonderful selection of vacuums including one of Terry Lattz's.

Tomorrow, a list of attendees will be posted here. There is still time to get in on the fun. Remember, a FREE breakfast comes with you hotel room on Fri, Sat and Sun.

Here is a small preview.

New vacuums, old vacuums, we have a lot to see. Free old vacuums up for the taking during your visit on friday. Maybe you can find the vacuum cleaner you are looking for to add to your collection.  Make your plans soon and lets have one of the best times with friends and vacuum cleaner fun! Here are just some of vacuums you can see on friday. I have a lot more that are stored in my trailer. Here is a sample.

Vacuum cleaner clinic.

This year we can pick some vacuums from my pictures above for our repair clinic. If some one wants to do the clinic let me know. We can do 2 or 3 if we want as long as we make some simple ones. I have all the tools here to work on the vacuums.

to the list attending via Dave Olsen:

Mitch Bramstaedt
Kenny Loveland
Barb MacMillon
Scott MacMillon
Phillip Muller
Greg Nunn
Joe Kassock
John Long

That brings us to 29 attendees with 41 days to go. Remember, I said if we do not have 40 by May 20th, there is a good likelihood we will cancel as it will be less expensive to pay the penalty to the hotel and refund the registration fees.

Are you coming or not?

See you soon!

Breathe Easy................

air-waycharlie's profile picture
We now have OVER 40 attending so all is well children!

Even last night Tania and I were talking current plans based on the numbers. As numbers increase, there are small, "tweaks", that have to made and we would like to have all attendees names so name tags can be awaiting them at sign in.

Other news:

Barb MacMillan, Scott MacMillan and John Pease have volunteered to run the, "new and improved cleaning contest". We will need other volunteers for that. Also, volunteers are needed for registration and door monitoring. Who will help? Any Board Members?

If you would like to be on the, "Volunteer List", please email me at flychasair@aol.com and let me know.

I'll keep you posted on any new developments on this thread.

Two more things for your consideration...........

air-waycharlie's profile picture
The cut off date for the discounted hotel rate ends Monday, June 20th. The hotel will not honor a reduced rate after that date.

Also, for those opting to register at the convention, YOU WILL NOT be entitled to four, (4), free raffle tickets. This was a Board decision to motivate members to register before the convention starts. This helps the planning committee with menu planning with the hotel and for those hosting meals, ie: Tania and Duane. Not only does it help them, it helps for the banquet planning and how many will be having the included free breakfast.

Update

air-waycharlie's profile picture
We now have roughly 45 members/guests attending. This is a good thing!

Reminder: The special hotel rate ends on Monday. Better book this weekend if you have any thoughts of attending.

Also, if you plan to register or join and register, at the door, would you please let me know? It helps if we have real numbers so everyone can have a meal! If you register at the door with no advance notice, we will do our best but make no guarantees.

As the numbers continue to increase, we will keep you posted here.

WE are ALL rooming together. There might be a murder in the hotel!!! WE're renting a vehicle. A few of us will be able to travel to Tania's, Duane's, and other stops along the way. John Lucia, Billy Lipman, fasten your seatbelts. I'll gladly drive, but someone else will navigate. I'll bring the Tom Tom too. Are we all getting excited?
I'm even working on getting my 'book' together. A lot of members bring a scrapbook, photo album, etc with their collections in them to share with the gang. So pack a new toothbrush in your 'carry on bag' and let's go!

My first convention!   Yay!!!

Don't ask me to navigate please!   God only knows where we would end up.........  I'm much better at sitting there and being quiet.

Practicing sleeping with one eye open.   Thinking of coming in on Wednesday instead of Thursday.

John, you and Joe are coming late on Wednesday, right?  Will the room be ready if I come in Wednesday afternoon?  That way I can be there when you get in............    Scared yet????????????????

What fun!  What fun!

Greg

convention

Hi all,
I am very excited, this is my first one! I got my room, and am ready to go!

Can't wait to try out a few vacs, if possible. Hoover Junior upright, GE upright, and a Compact, never used any of these.

But, looking forward to meeting everyone! I like to party, as my Alias is Chandler. Remember Anastacia Beaverhousen on Will and Grace? Yep, I have an alias too!

John from GB
PA I do have a room to myaelf if things get overcrowded, I could maybe take a roomate

in terms of vacs to bring, i'll bring my hoover custom convertible as I think it will really look nice and many people would admire it's beauty. I'll also bing my Kirby sentria as I really think it would be one of the coolest Kirby's at the convention. I may bring my dyson dc07 animal as now it deep cleans (I accidently clogged the brush roll with dirt clumps and I unclogged it, that's how I got it to deep clean). I probably might bring my eureka Superbroom Brush Up model 167 as it is one of the best stick vacs ever made (why did you discontinue it, eureka?) and it would be one of the most unique vacs there. for the cleaning contest, i'm definitely entering my hoover and my Kirby, but my dyson and my eureka I'm not sure about. as for the show and tell, I've definitely got a lot to share about my hoover.I've got a small amount to share about my eureka. I've got a little bit more than my eureka (if not just the same) to share about my dyson. I've got an amount somewhere between my dyson and my hoover to share about my Kirby. I do not have any machines I am willing to raffle off because my collection is very small. Here is a picture of the 2 machines I will definitely be bringing to the convention.

It looks like we will have nearly 50 attendees! Name tags have been printed. (If you have not registered by now, sorry, your name tag will be hand printed.) Ribbons and trophies arrive in Milwaukee June 6th.

Michael Turner will be on hand to run the show and we have spoken. Tania, Duane and I are in touch regularly. Duane has wonderful new vacuums for the raffle that he can tell you about here. Raffle tickets have been acquired.

All systems are go! See you soon.

Hi Robert, hi Fred, I planned to be there, but that trip to Indiana and the upcoming second phase to ship my machines, as well as building the storage shed/display room has eaten up all my funds. So while I can't be there in person, I will be in spirit.

Did I hear right, next year is at Kirby? If so, that one I can't miss. By then my really old machines will be cleaned and restored.

To John Lucia. Give Billy Lippman a hug from me. Please have him get in touch with me, I would love to reestablish contact.

Thanks,

Wish I could be there. My new job has had me traveling like a mad-man and I'm flying to Frankfurt on Saturday, I guess Charlie won't be serving me! Fortunately I get to go Envoy (business) which makes it a whole lot easier of a trip. Amazing what a lay flat bed will do for you on a long flight. Have fun and post lots of pics!

We will miss you! I was flying Paris all of May. In June a mix of international flights but will be on Frankfurt the end of the Month. In July, it will be Paris and Frankfurt again. Let me know your schedule so I can, "put in the word", with the crew.

And, the lie flat seats in Envoy Class are wonderful. The food is mostly okay and the selection of wines great. Have the sparkling white and Spanish red, not the Cabernet.

Sorry you will not make it but you will be with us in spirit! Safe travels.

Trains

Are the only way to fly! I have been to New Orleans and to Flagstaff, AZ by train from Chicago, it's the best way to see the country - you will see things from a train you could never see from the air or from an interstate highway.

Our main event will be in the Rembrant room. Other events will be in the Monet and Picasso rooms. This is always subject to change as the VanGogh may be utilized as well.

It depends on our final number of attendees and what works for us and the hotel. But, that is the wing of the hotel that we will be in.

See you soon!

The club event is not open to the general public. We have done that in the past and the results have warranted doing it again. We may try to have some local news coverage.

Most of the general public does not, "get us", initially, and we don't mind folks laughing with us, but, not at us. Also, sometimes when the general public and even hotel employees are allowed in, "things", sometimes mysteriously disappear.

The group this year is going to be so large in number that our space would be cramped with others than our members and their guests.

Thanks for answering my question.

I had thought about driving up to Milwaukee just to take a look see at some of the vacs on display as its on a 45 minute drive from where I'm located.

However, due to having 4 Great Danes I wouldn't have been able to stay more then a hour befor heading back home to take care of my dogs.

Have a great time everyone.

bojack vacuum bags, unintentionally. I save them up to bring to the convention. Most of them I put on the free table. I sometimes take something form that table. Please include the following: cigarette holder, tiara, turban and sunglasses. Probably of supply of pens for autographs would be good too. Do you have an extra pair of spring-a-lators? Mine are in for repair.

I do have a 27 CD set of Disconet mixes from 1977 to about 1985 so music is taken care of. They just arrived from London yesterday.

Last thing, save all your small juice cans for hair rolling! I'll have my Lady Sunbeam portable dryer but never have enough cans for rolling.

Milwaukee is an easy drive from St. Charles. Otherwise I would have to take my plane. I asked Helen to arrange through her connections to get me a plane as sleek, fast and large as hers. When I arrived at the airport, this is what I found. A refurbished 1954 Vickers Viscount turboprop. She even arranged for the livery. That's the last time she's shopping for me.

Disappointed that I can't be there.  Reading this thread, the reality has set in.  I will miss everyone.  Michael Turner is prepared to lead the troups!

I just want to personally Thank everyone who helped make this convention a success.  With out a doubt it will be an awesome event.

To all you convention virgins...hang on to your hats...you will simply be amazed!

Phillip....it will be your responsibility to keep Mr Asquith in line....I know it will be a big job, but a piece of advice...don't let him drive to see the collections....there are no tollways...so he will get lost!

Someone will also have to help Mr. Louis....he also gets lost....sometimes even in the hotel!  Someone may have to point him in the right direction once off of the elevator.

Mark and I have started packing for Russia.  We have purchased around $250.00 in supplies for the children at the orphanage.  It has been fun looking for items that they can use.  We leave bright and early on Sunday morning.  Going to drive to Rockford, IL and pick up the shuttle bus to the airport.

The Boston bombing set our Visa process behind, they are to be delivered on the 20th or 21st....cutting it very close.

Have fun everyone!  I will be on the lookout for Russian Vacuums...and perhaps even get the chance to run one!  Won't take the place of the convention....but it will remind me of this AWESOME group!

Morgan

Hi. I am interested in some information about the VCCC convention in Milwaukee this weekend. I live about 3 hours north-west of milwaukee so it is not a far drive for me.

My question is I would like to buy and restore an old kirby D50 or 560 or a 561. Are there going to be many vendors/sellers of old kirby vacuums at the convention?

I do not mind the fees to attend, nor the drive to attend but if there are not many kirky sellers/vendors there attending the convention it will not be worth the time, gas, and money for me to attend as I am new to the hobby and really only interested in going to the event to buy a project to restore --- so can you help me out and let me know???

Thanks
Michael

P.S., not trying to affend anyone with this posting, I am just new to the hobby and really only looking to buy a new project which I can restore.

convention

Just wondering, how many first timers will there be, or virgins as we are referred to?
I hate to be the only one.

A couple of things you should know: Only paid members of the VCCC are allowed to attend unless you want to join at the event and that cost would be $35.00. In addition, there is a $75.00 registration fee to attend the event.

This is a VCCC sponsored and supported event for it's paid members. There are no vendors. There are several members that are vac store owners but there are no booths. We have designated areas for raffle vacuums, free vacuum items and a for sale area. This is the 30th year anniversary of the conventions.

At the beginning of this thread, you will see a schedule of events. This schedule is similar to what has been happening for nearly the last 10 years of our conventions.

I don't want to discourage you, but to pay $105.00 just to get in--I'm not sure it would be what you would expect. You might do better here soliciting what vacuums you are looking for and then do private emails with the sellers. Most of what you mentioned appear on ebay from time to time, plus you can find great things at estate sales and thrift stores.

We certainly would encourage you to join the club to pursue your interest in vacuums as a wealth of knowledge is available from the membership. Just ask, it will come at you in many directions.

Hope this answers your questions and concerns.

RE: the number of, "Convention Virgins", attending, I do not have the registrations list in front of me, (I am in transit to the convention), but, there are a fair number of new names. You can only be a virgin once..........savor the moment and make wonderful memories! I'm one of the, "oldies", that look forward to meeting new members. Looking forward to seeing and meeting all our newbies! All our members are always welcoming to those attending for the first time and do not be afraid to ask questions as to what is going on. That is the only way to learn.

Charlie

The van is at Joe's. I'm packing the suitcase now.
I trimmed the bushes outside.
All my school papers are corrected.
The cats' supplies are in.
My friend has agreed to look in on them.
Vacuum for the contest is in the box.
Camera card is empty and ready to go.
Full bottle of Excedrin AND a pack of rubber gloves (for any foreign species of vacuums)are ready.
LOOKS LIKE I MIGHT BE ALMOST ALL SET!!
Leaving my house at 7 am. YIKES!!

Well I see on Facebook some are getting close to Milwaukee. Phillip is near Rockford IL.

Tried to get ahold of Louis and John, Louis didn't answer. They were leaving this morning around 8.

Phillip didn't say if he was driving or Rick......but I am sure they are "Livin the Dream" Phillip did say he woke up this morning and Rick had taken his car....I guess a test drive...LOL

I am all ready missing everyone and wish I could be there.

Michael is in route as well. We will see how many vacuums he picks up on the way. The first year I met him, we tore apart a Singer and rebuilt in our room. Mark was not impressed...LOL We had dust all over!

I have been running around all night trying to get ready for the trip on Thursday.I wish the contractors would have finished my new patio, but I will have to leave things here a mess. AW, who cares I am going to Milwaukee to see vacs and make new friends.

Probably won't get there until 7:30-8, depending on the traffic. Hope I don't miss too much fun.Watch for me,ok, gang?

Have a great time, next year I will be there.

It's been a great night!! We got to meet Greg who is a very nice guy. Rick and I arrived on time ( I drove, only one toll ). We got here about 5, and had dinner with many folks. I'd make a list but I'd hate to leave anyone out. Well it's bed time, Barb and I are going walking early in the morning.

It's so easy to be a "nice guy" around such a great group of people.

Everyone is a delight! Laughing   I'm so glad I came and the convention hasn't really "officially" started.

Anxiously waiting to meet so many others and put faces to names and personalities.

So jealous right now...I know how much fun pre-convention activities can be. Has comedian John Long arrived yet...the fun really starts then...don't ask him about going to a nuns funeral unless you are prepared to laugh!

Still waiting on word about our Visa and passports...did get our E-tickets...not much good without the Visa and passports...

Someone needs to start posting some pics. ASAP!

I know many are on their way today as well. Talked with Fred and Robert last night, Greg is meeting up with them.

So many wonderful people...it is hard not being there!

... and it's everything I expected AND MORE.

So much to do so many people to meet and enjoy.

The media is here.  The fun never stops.  It is absolutely FABULOUS

Tomorrow awaits and a visit to Duane's shop and home are the promise of the day.

Then back to the Clarion for vacuum fun and frivolity.  Games and contests are sure to abound.

Time for some beauty sleep.  G'night all.  Such fun awaits the 'morrow!

Good news here! Our Visa's and passports arrived, dates are correct this time, looks like we are heading to Russia...

Storming here now, wicked lightening...heading your way this afternoon.

Have fun at Duane's!

Safe trip!

We are having a great time here in Milwaukee.  The "field trip" to Duane's home was fun.  So many vacuums left his property with smiling owners.

The catered lunch was delicious and, by then, the torrents had stopped.  Rick Asquith now has a new motor in his Airway and he's ready to "suck the paint off the walls."

Duane's store was terrific.

Naptime now and dinner and our own.  8:00 brings "show and tell."
