So the recent purchase of my Hoover Celebrity II was a nice find but I have one small problem. The cord retract does not work. I can pull the cord out but it won't lick into place and just retracts back into the unit. I called one of the local vacuum shops and was told that I can bring it in and that they will look at it but no guarantee that it can be fixed because with the handfull of times that Hoover has changed hands parts for a machine are virtually impossible to find. I kinda had to laugh at this one because these models are still in use and people have to have them fixed at one point or another. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

As you pull the cord out do you hear sort of a ratcheting, clicking noise? If you do there is nothing wrong with the cord winder, you need to stop pulling on the cord as soon as you hear the ratcheting sound and it will stay out. To get the cord to retract, pull it out and when you don't hear the ratchet noise it will retract. If you pull the cord out and it does not make that clicking noise, there is something wrong with the cord winder. Good luck.

I cleaned the cord really good and I think I fixed it up.

The years of accumulated schmutz you cleaned off the cord travels over time inside the cordwinder under suction, collects on the pawls on the spring hub that flings the pawls outward to engage the hub stops. If those get stuck in the open position the cord does not lock up.
Without dismantling the cordwinder and dangerous reverse coiled spring it is usually sufficient to access the hub and spray/drip in some spray lubricant (NOT WD-40!) that will migrate to the pawls & central axle and free up the action for many more years of smart retraction.

Incase you need, there are a few eBay auctions claiming to have Celebrity cord winders.

Would this unit by any chance happen to be the orange Elite and would you mind uploading a picture. I love Hoover Celebrity canisters!!

Thank you and best of luck with your great find. Hope you got a power nozzle with it!!

Hey Durango159

I did post a picture a couple of weeks ago on a thread when I bought it. So far everything seems to be working and in order. I really like it. I think it will be good vacuum for those days I'm in a hurry.
