When an argos vac exploded while I was using it LOL

I had to use an Electrolux gazelle (like a eureka maxima bagless) and I hated the experience! The belt had snapped, so I had to use the hose- with the USELESS turbo brush thing. You have to bend down to the floor to reach the hose, so not good if you have a bad back!
But however when it works properly it ain't bad. It pulls itself across the floor!

Also I had to use a Panasonic canister and it made my ears hurt. Loud was an understatement. Ear piercing is getting there. Plain unbearable is about right.

The argos exploded!?!?!? And the Eureka maxima is the same company as the Electrolux just different divisions of it. So i see where you are coming from

Lol I wouldn't expect that to happen to a dyson. And yeah, I was just vacuuming my carpet with the argos vac and then BOOM! and that was the end of that xD

Brandon, Mr 13 years old, ignore the advice in my post above if you like but seriously?

Your comment on and contribution to this thread is to simply name a vacuum/floorcare brand...with no specifics or story?

I am embarrassed for you, boy.

When I started to collect vacuums many moons ago, one of the first machines "given" to me was my parents' old Vax tub canister vacuum, a Powa 1400 watt deep blue vac 3 in 1 machine. A big old thing, great for washing carpets and it was a great all rounder until my parents could no longer drag it along or lift it up. It had lasted 20 odd years and still goes, albeit with a cracked top and a bit taken off the side where the castors go. I use it for sucking up the dirt after I've pressure washed the paving stones (yes, seriously!).

Long before I realised the worth of using a squarer, more rectangular shaped machine on stairs and probably just beginning to get into the art of cleaning, I went about cleaning stairs with the Vax and wondered why no one had attempted to do the stairs before with a round tub! Well I eventually found out the hard way and never to leave a tub at the top of the stairs with you at the bottom and with the hose in the hand!

With a slight tug to the hose, and with my back to the machine, the Vax came tumbling down the flight of carpeted stairs, crashed into me, taking me down face first and ended up knocking myself out on the bottom landing with a huge gash across my left ear as it had cushioned the blow of the impact! The Vax careered into the wall to the left hand side of me, taking a section of plastic off the side of the machine at the top revealing the motor!

To say that I felt like a right TWIT was an understatement. I never attempted to clean stairs again with a round tub vacuum cleaner, even with Henry and his longer hose!

I was using a purple and green DC04 which was mine and I accidently stepped on the cable cus I wasn't holding it, and it fell out with loads of sparks and the electric 240 volt cable nearly hit my foot! I nearly died.

I had a DC03 standard and the cable had a naked wire, I tried to fix it and it sparked!!!
I had a DC01 standard YDK and it was burning it and it sounded like it was drowning and then it stinked and was loud!!! and smoked a little bit.

I vacuumed up ash with my DC04 outside in the garden without a filter, I also left the post filter in, when I checked that, it was all dusty so I used with out any filter, turned it on and the whole garden was full of smoke!!! In the morning i turned it on, and it died. :(

I had a blue and purple DC07 allergy from a carboot, my Dad helped me fix it as the motor was burnt out, we cleaned it up all shiny new, the brush was hairy, motor airy, cyclone hairy, filter hairy everything!! we took the motor out and tried to run it, my Dad told me to switch it on and it smoked SO MUCH!!!!!!!! and had an electrical smell, after that we just left it and got a new motor for the DC07 :)
My Dad ordered the 1600w motor for me non genuine but cleaned great and was quieter!

When I met the mrs, she had a Hoover Alyx. Nice machine to look at, but my god it was awful! Didn't pick anything up despite good airflow, I stripped it down and rebuilt it and it was still awful. It's at her mums now!

Another one, we were at my friends parents holiday home (without his parents, was a drunken mess of a week!), with deep pile carpets. The vacs to choose from were an old hitachi cylinder, and a DC04. After battling with the Hitachi, my friend pulls the DC04 out, and I express my delight and get to work clearing up. Turn it on, drop the head and.....it had a dead clutch. Que scrubbing the deep pile of this carpet with the Hitachi for hours on end. I gave them a Henry a few years ago and got good feedback from it.

As for explosive vacs, I had a Vax 2000 once, can't remember where I found it but I plugged it in and it exploded with a purple flash. OK, I thought, go back inside for some fresh underwear, got met by my stepdad asking if I knew anything about the bang and scorch marks from the fusebox, and why we had no power.

Turns out (partly due to old house wiring) that when the vac went bang, it surged from the garage phase into the house and took the old fuse out with a bang. My stepdad went through a period of running a multimeter over everything I bought home after that. I never did find out why the Vax exploded, it hastily got taken to the tip!

my worst

My worst experience was with a Kenmore baless canister vacuum. They clog very easy and the filter is not removable. Also I accidentally stepped on the hose and it crushed.

I can honestly say I have never had a bad vacuum experience. Then I knew from a very early age that vacuums were my friends.

Now my Aunt on the other hand has taken three falls over the hose of her central vac resulting in a broken arm on all occasions. My Uncle bought her a Hoover Windtunnel, harder to trip over or get your feet tangled up in a upright.

I had a Bissel DigiPro canister and it was horrible. The 'Intelligent Suction Contro' didn't recognize dirt half the time on my darker carpets, and it was extremley noisy. I now have an Oreck Graphite, and while it's noisy too, it does a much better job. I couldn't have been happier - and it's made in the USA.

Worst vac for me--A Premeir made Master craft upright vacuum sold from a Janitorial supplier sometime in the 70's-ordered it for a radio station. Its duty was at the manned transmitter site-the place had indoor-outdoor carpet. At transmitter sites vacuums have to contend with screws and other peices of hardware.A Sears Kenmore canister was its companion-it vacuumed out the transmitters. That Premeir was horrible-the plastic base cracked twice, the fan broke twice as well-and a STEEL fan at that. Finally the Mastercrafts motor died-and it met a crushing death in the neighberhoods Ez-Pak trash truck.Crunched it to plastic bits.Replaced it with a commerical Royal-Much better! Then the Sears vac died-liked that little thing-worked good.Replaced it with an NSS M1 vacuum.Somewhere around I have the bag for the Mastercraft-still packed somewhere. Was black-and could use F&G type bags.

Worst experience

In the mid 80's I had some sort of nasty K-mart purchased canister. I can't remember if it was a cheap Hoover or a Bissell. However, it was a nice spring day, and I decided to vacuum out the winter grunge from the car.

I had it outside, on a rubber mat, plugged into a GFI outlet, and was merrily "vacuuming" away (actually, it got the grit, but I had to stuff the fluff into the nozzle for it to suction it,) when the machine stopped working. I got out of the car to investigate, and noticed my neighbor shouting and madly gesturing from her window: The cord had shorted out at the junction to the machine, and a small fire had started!

I managed to extinguish the fire with an old blanket from the trunk, and was going to throw the whole works into the trash, when Mr. Cheapskate (my husband) insisted on tearing down the machine and fixing it, even though my plan was to just go buy another cheap machine to replace it until I could afford a decent machine.

That took him four weeks, and plenty of nagging, to do. I had the piece of junk for another four years.

When our dog yakked on the carpet and I "dry-cleaned" the carpet it obviously developed nasty odors. The canister seal had long since dried up, and you could see puffs of dust when you used the machine. I'd like to say "vacuum," but it wasn't doing much of that: I still had to stuff dust bunnies into the wand tubes.

I was on the verge of moving home with mother unless we got something that actually worked, and told him to go ahead and live in the detritus of daily living if it didn't bother him. He finally capitulated and bought me a Fantom Fury as a replacement.

It was an improvement, but nothing special. It bit the dust after about three years. And I didn't like having to empty the dust cup. Unfortunately, it bit the dust on a Sunday, the only place that was open was a WalMart, and I ended up with a Bissell power force upright for $40. Even that cheap machine did a better job than the Fury, with the advantage that I didn't have to dump the dust cup.

I still have the Bissell (Mr. Cheapskate can't bear to toss anything that still remotely accomplishes its function,) but after slipping a disc and needing surgery, I was able to loudly proclaim that, according to the neurosurgeon, vacuuming was one of the most dangerous things I could do to my injured back, unless I got a very lightweight upright that I could use without twisting, horsing it around, or having to bend over to operate (or stuff dust bunnies into the tube.)

That's how I ended up with my new Riccar RS4. For the first time in my life, I actually like to vacuum. And even Mr. Cheapskate commented how it has made a noticeable difference in how the old wall-to-wall carpet looks.

Really???

A Fantom did that? I LOVE Fantoms and have never had that problem with my Fury. And yeah the K-mart bissell canisters are terrible cleaners filter wise. Becuase the bagless ones filters get so clogged that airflow is terrible.

My worst experience

We had a Kenmore Progressive canister (white casing) and the power nozzle height pedal broke the first time that I used it. The internal mechanism broke in the PN. We replaced it with an Electrolux Nimble for 6 months, never had a problem with it.

Kenmore

Is just one of those brands that work well but aren't good quality depending on model.

As far as I know that model is made by Panasonic, normally a very reliable brand but when you build a machine down to a price you have to cut corners somewhere.

I have three good ones. I have only had a handful of vacs die while in use. The first was a Dirt Devil newer style vision of some type a neighbor gave me. I knew the motor was on its way out, but I used it once and the next time I turned it on and within 10 seconds got a couple big arcs from the motor and it went up in smoke. Another is this little Eureka mighty might I have. Aparently the bag wasn't trapping dust too well, and the motor sucked up a lot of fine dust, which in turn caked up on the carbons and caused it to loose almost all power within a couple minutes. It took me a minute or two to realize there was something wrong with the machine. Cleaned the motor out, put a better filter and bag in it and works fine now. Last one was with a shop vac brand shop vac. I was working with a friend and he was vacuuming up some dust and that drop ceiling material that falls apart all the time. Well we both had our backs to the shop vac. Well, everything it picked up went right out the exhaust and nearly sprayed the whole building with fine dust because the filter fell off. Needless to say my friend is just too cheap to buy a $15 filter. Also some how snapped a blade off a Eureka fan once just cleaning out a furnace air filter.

Wow

Those Eurekas like the mighty mite are decent but not a good seller in my town. We had 2 of them sit at Walmart here and they didn't leave for months and months. Then I went to buy one and of course then they are gone! But just recently I was using a Ultra Super Shark on the shoulder vac. After about 3 minutes into vacuuming the strap broke off and it fell to the floor.

Bissell "Zing" ! I don't know what I was thinking buying it, but it was £19.99 in Tesco and I thought well it's very small I could just use it for the cars. It was so noisey my ears hurt, the filteration was terriable there was a coating of dust on the exhaust grill despite the air passing through three filters. Tried using it in the house but the plastic tubes would bend so much on carpet I expected them to snap, it was thrown away soon after.

The Vax Widetrack V0-45

I bought this one many years ago for £39-99 online for a friend who had just got a dog. The machine worked well for the first couple of months then she brought it back to me saying that she had followed the user manual and "cleaned" the filters. So I looked at the Vax and discovered that whilst she had cleaned the outer mesh filter, the paper cone filter was completely caked in dog and dust. This is when I got covered in dust from head to toe cleaning all the dust off.

After cleaning it off with another vacuum cleaner and then washing the filter and waiting to dry, I put a new fresh filter in and the Vax still wasn't working. This was because the main central telescopic suction tube that also acts as the main spine of the upright was completely clogged up with dog hair, biscuits, cat hair and cat litter all jammed up. Took about five attempts to knock it all out and thus also got covered in pongy pet hair. I Have to say then, it was probably one of the worst experiences of my life!! Thereafter the upright worked but then a year later, bits of plastic started to fall off it.

I think the U.S have had this upright as a Shark/Euro-Pro. Aside from the filter design, it is one of the worst uprights I've ever used as it is very heavy, has cheap plastics and quite noisy.

Bissell Zing

I had a bagged Bissell Zing for a while but I returned it due to the fact that I just didnt like it much. The reason being is that the tubes are way to cheap like you mentioned. Also, the bags were terribly made and even with the other filter within a few hours the filter was already getting pretty dirty. I did not find it very noisy though. However, I returned it the same day.

Well a Bissell Powerforce is not going to be the best cleaner. And the Kenmore Bagless wasnt too bad of a vac. I have one and used to use it a lot until I got a Kenmore Lime Green canister to replace it.

Some years ago I was doing some prototype testing on a new Motor to be fitted to a Shopvac style vacuum cleaner. We had about 10 prototypes running in various stages of assembly. We were having some trouble with Motor failure when one of the half bodied units exploded sending bits of motor everywhere. The cooling fan shot off and hit me in the head making some nasty cuts.

It was later found that the batch of sample motors sent out by the manufacturer had a faulty brush mount causing the ruptures. Just one of the many reasons that prototypes are tested so vigorously.

I have two.

My first "worst experience" was with a Regina Housekeeper Whispurr. This vacuum was a tank, and not in a good way. It was heavy and clunky, and NEVER cleaned well. The only positive thing about this machine was that it had quite a bit of hose suction. But this vacuum taught me that just because a machine sucks at the hose, it can BLOW with cleaning at the brushroll. It would frequently grind dirt in, and make the carpet appear dingy and worn.

My other one was caused by my own stupidity (and is quite hilarious taken in context). I was vacuuming out my wood pellet stove with a 6 gal shop vac. About 5 minutes in, I heard a thud inside the cleaner. I didn't turn around, and kept on going. Turns out the filter came off, and I had a tornado of black soot blowing around the living room. Yup... I vacuumed the ENTIRE stove before I smelled the soot. It made one hell of a mess

Using a Dyson

To be precise a 1997 DC01 Absolute.

It was $hit. To be fair it was beaten up & not looked after properly, filters never been cleaned ONCE!!! It belonged to my then sister-in-law, let me have a go & it stank, plus the fact that it refused to pick up anything & smelt like crap.

Also another bad Dyson experience was using my sisters second-hand 2003 DC03, same condition as above & had CURRY sucked up in it. Needless to say after that experience I took my trusty Henry to their houses.

In my experience, curry is one of the most difficult smells to get out of a vacuum cleaner completely and utterly. When a machine comes my way now with that smell, I pass on it. The one I struggled with I cleaned while disassembled more than once. Certain parts had to be cleaned with a spray odor neutralizer (lovely lavender scent). Eventually, it got it to run without emitting a smell but it was way too much work. Once purged, I moved it on down the road.

I don't really have any dramatic vacuum failure stories to my own credit. One that I recall attributed to someone else is interesting. Some time ago, a Hoover Celebrity was given to me. It was a nice navy blue model with the chrome trim. When I lifted the top, the first thing I noticed was that the plastic motor cover was melted. Not good. Further disassembly showed that the lower motor bearing was completely blown out; no bearings left. The bearing races were kind of rattling around off of each other. I later found out that the previous owner had been deaf. They accidently left the machine on indefinitely until it destroyed itself. They only discovered the problem when the circuit breaker tripped.

Remember, any motor can't run idefinitely.Something will go sooner or later-did serve as an endurance test for the Celebrity vacuums motor!Although in a building I used to work in an older Crocker Wheeler motor was walled in and forgotten for about 40yrs--ran all of that time without attention! was on a HVAC blower.Same with the blower! The units were replaced with new ones when the wall that was no longer required taken down. The fan was a Buffalo Forge. These were put in 1939 when the building was built-Wash DC gov't building. It is interesting what you find or is walled in at those places!A building engineer told me about the motor and fan.
