Here is my rare Hoover Turbopower Freedom which was a Christmas gift from my friend Michael. It is a non cyclonic bagless Upright that Hoover offered in the early 1990's which they called "Permabag" as a convenient way to dispose of the dirt without the cost of buying bags, this was released way before James Dyson released his bagless vacuum cleaner, the DC01.

It is in very good condition with just a few dull spots in some areas on the metallic finish (I think whoever owned it prior to me were smokers). It has all of its tools and sounds good, although it does need a new fan as someone had sucked up a nail with it and there is quite a big hole in it, so it is a tad noisy.

These freedoms do clog quite easily and they also leak a little bit of dust in normal use, unless you suck up something like flour, in which case will cover the machine in dust, lol.

This was Hoovers Top of the line Turbopower of that time and it had all the bells and whistles, accept cord rewind. Despite some of its draw backs it is a very stylish, smart and sophisticated looking machine in my opinion.

Well, here she is.

How it looks when you unclip the permabag box.

alexhoovers94's profile picture

The dust blows into the permabag system, and gets directed down into the box by that plastic piece that situates near the inlet hole, the dusty air circulates back up and any large partiles hit the plastic mesh to stop those heavier particles clogging the filter, then the fine dust gets trapped in the filter and passes threw the air freshner and back into the room.

Great vac, as I always say I've got a u2718(the model below this) although hoover only offered the u2718 and the freedom as the TOL models, as although the freedom has permabag, the u2718 has auto flex.
Great vac once again, outcleans pretty much all modern vacuums!

I would say that most Turbopowers out clean the modern vacs but the freedom, it cleans great but does loose the usual turbopower performance if you do not empty it and bang out the filter after EVERY use.

Here is..

alexhoovers94's profile picture

The bottom of the line total system Turbopower that I have, which I actually like a lot, and is so much cleaner, hygienic and doesn't clog like the freedom does.
They both perform the same until the freedom clogs, which is not long after the first use with a clean filter, which is why it is imperative that you clean the filter and empty the box after each use.

This one bellow is actually my daily driver and yes I use the hose :) I love using the tools on these, the suction is not the strongest compared to modern vacuums but it is enough and gets the job done, I really do not like the super strong suction of new vacuums, they fall over and the suction just sticks to things way to easily, which is so annoying!!

It is almost like todays eqivelant of Dysons DC40 and DC41 cleaners! Crazy similar in that way, if you see what I mean.

Also the difference in price is not that much considering the turbomaster is a lot bigger and has a couple more features.

price difference

The price between the Turbopower and Turbomaster would have been over £70 in todays money. To me, that is a good deal more, but of course it is subjective.

with the Turbomaster you get a bigger cleaner, more powerful motor, variable power, brushroll on/off and height adjustment that has electronic lights behind.
Does that not make up for the extra £40 (£70)??

Not forgetting the TM has a wider sweeping path for bigger houses and larger areas,
The height of the cleaner is also very differential and a massive plus to those over 5'5.

Its size of head means that while using the same fan as the TP and a similar motor wattage if not a bit higher means that theres not as much suction at the base of the cleaner BUT this makes the machine ironically easier to move as it does not grip the carpet as much as a TP does yet it still cleans to the same standard as a TP.

The higher handle helps the user to move the machine more easily when in use.

Overall they are more convienient to use as a TP when dealing with larger areas.

Chris (turbo500) He said they were better than the turbopower, so I figured that they cleaned better at the head, wheather he ment just more powerful, I am not sure.

Hello gentlemen. I agree there was a lot to be had for the extra £70 in todays money, and indeed I think a good deal of consumers went for the TM instead of the TP as there seems to have been a lot more of them around. No, what I was meaning was that the price difference between the two was considerable and that logically one would have had to really want the extra specifications to make it worth paying more for.

Interesting I thought that the consumer could literally get two Goblin Laser cleaners for the price of one Turbomaster Freedom. I may have said before that I had a customer bringing me in three Moulinex master cleaners for repair, all identical, two of which she'd bought for herself, on the basis that the Moulinex had been so very much cheaper than the Hoover cleaner she'd intended to buy, and that she felt it was worth buying cheaper, buying two, and spreading the workload by having one for cleaner for upstairs and one for down. The third cleaner had been bought for her mother. This, I recall her saying, was all bought about by the fact that she'd previously bought a Hoover cleaner for quite a lot of money and it had been a thorn in her side from the word go.

that more people bought the TM freedom, probably because the TM freedom had a TV ad unlike the TP freedom (to my knowledge)

To be fair, the Turbomaster advert did not get shown for all that long. Maybe Hoover intended to launch an advert for the Turbopower Freedom but held back as a result of the problems keeping the dust where it should be. Joan Sanderson and Prunella Scales were very much actresses of the moment as they were starring in an excellent radio comedy called After Henry, which had been transferred to television and was being shown at the time of the Hoover advert.

I do wonder also if Hoover pulled the TM advert to avoid selling more of these cleaners.
