Toby writes, "Send me $40.00, and I'll send you a surprise." Hmmm...maybe it's that pink and white Swivel-Top he was holding over my head. Read his letter last night, expect package Wednesday or Thursday. I got home from junk shopping and found THIS on my doorstep!! Holy Toledo!! Baby's first Roll-Easy!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! It's the beginning of a beautiful vacuum cleaner!

Lovely!

To remove the white splotchy stuff (which is mold) from the floor tool, and anywhere on the machine where there might be any, moisten a cloth with chlorine bleach and daub the cloth over the spots. PRESTO! Gone with a poof! Just like other moldy pests, haha! You should do this over your sink lest you drip bleach on your floor. (You can also put some bleach in a spray bottle and do it that way but don't do so while wearing a black shirt...)

After treating the mold with the bleach, wash the bleach off with cool water. Then you can polish the dulled surface with furniture polish, Armor-All, etc.

Thanks, Charles~Richard, that obnoxious mold is back again on my '57 Fisher hi-fi knobs too. Great tip, I'll give it a go. I visited your Roll-Easy site, and of course found my model there. The first day I went online looking for GE parts/tools, I found your site and vowed one day I'd own one. I never knew how easy that would turn out to be. What a life!

Wow. So wacky a design no one tried to copy it. :-)

The Roll-Easy keeps me entranced, so much so I have it sitting on the foot of the bed table so its one of the first things I see upon waking, on the way to the coffee maker.

Mine also was liberally infected with the white powdery mold inside & out. Of course I had the whole machine apart the next day, (obstensably to kiss-coat the wheel rotation collars with some sewing mchine oil, which does make them spin quieter) including backing out the 3 threaded copper nails pinning the outlet panel in place. LOL. I followed Tanya's and Charles' advice and it all gleams like new again.

I can well imagine how many Roll-Easy cords got yanked to uselessness on sharp turns and how many hoses bit the dust & split from an equal amount of yanking...I know I'm lucky to have both intact.

Yes, I am still begging for a lead on a G.E. hose or the ends that have that particular tall conical release button & latch spaceing. I don't care what color it is; turquoise stock will come along eventually. but meantime I can't appreciate any of the suction of this vac through the porous hose, no matter how beautiful its weave may be. :-(

Can you tell me, Alan, does your G.E Swiveltop have the same hose ends? Are they interchangable? Knowing this I could go asking around for one of those or pick up a derilict Swiveltop somewhere...

Dave, a pleased as punch member of the Roll-Easy contingent.

and btw, Charles, what is the truly lovely Miss Tanya's profile on here? Does she have one?

Actually, someone did try and copy it! There is a Westinghouse that one of my friends got that is brown. It has two huge wheels, but there is one swivel wheel in the back to help it roll better. It is a very strange one too.

Does anyone know if the Roll-Easy motor is the same as the Swivel Top? I need a new one for my Roll-Easy; the fan seems bent and that is causing a lot of problems, both noise and performance. I heard that these were actually very quiet. Mine seems louder than my Bison! HAHA!! :-) Seriously, though! Anyways...

The Roll-Easy is a very quiet machine when running properly -- almost as quiet as an Electrolux XXX. So Kyle, if yours is noisy then there is definitely something wrong with it.

I still can't believe I have a Roll-Easy. Since Toby described this as rough around the edges, I can mention the "flaws" in good conscience. The wands are a glossy curved one, the straight one is dull finish aluminum. The hose is a new one, and at least coordinated with the grey and aluminum of the vacuum. I have what is supposed to be the last model. The paintwork is nearly flawless. It needs new paint on the blower cover, and the excellent floor tool is not the exact model for mine, it would be the one used later on the Swivel-Top. The Swivel-Top hose ends don't have the tall buttons. My machine is free of white mold, unlike the salmon floor tool. My nice grey, new cord is wired in, unlike the original. I love your model Dave, and will be seeking one as time goes on. I think the two last models were narrower. I'll stick some detail pictures in shortly. I don't blame you for keeping yours near the night table.

As I normally say, with vacs..I'm not bothered about condition as long as a.) the machine works and is useful and b.) there are no (VITAL) parts missing.

I must say Alan I do like the floor tool, the colour mismatch gives the cleaner character. It's a flipover tool isn't it, like old Euro Electroluxes use?

In this country Hoover came out with a fliptool too, I think they were the last in the late 70s (the constellations over here had them among other things)

Even Goblin had a fliptool in the 1970s, which my Goblin's share lol.

Post# 20923 , Reply# 19   9/21/2007 at 17:17 (6,055 days old) by charles~richard ()

Well, Electrolux never really had a "flip tool" per se. The combination floor and rug tool is reversible but not by flipping it -- you have to remove the "neck," turn it over, and re-insert it. The earlier rug tools for the LXI and as far back as the XII did have a second surface originally called the "gleaner" that you could access by turning the nozzle over. It was a small area with concentrated slits to gather up lint and thread. When the rod-type gleaner (the long narrow bar with "teeth") was added to the rug side, the original gleaner side was renamed something else but I don't remember now what that name was. "Suction Concentrator" or some-such.

The first G-E to have the flip-over tool was the two-tone gray canister. Don't know the model number but it was the same basic machine that was gray, then green, then blue, then pink, and then the first Roll-Easy. The 2nd version of the Roll-Easy had the newer lower-profile rug-only tool with separate floor tool.

Doh! I should have remembered the Electrolux reversable! Our "neck" became permanently fused to the wand, and drove me crazy trying to get it loose. I still miss that vacuum!

Kyle, is this the Westinghouse you mean?

Found this on Doug Smith's (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) informative site. Westinghouse model MC 1 made in Brantford Ontario circa 1959.

Oh darn, another Canadian vacuum to put on the Quest List. :-)

Kerry, those links as pasted bring up 'page not found' or 'private album requires password'. :-(

Guys & gals, if you remove ?action=view¤t= from each photo url the pics come up. :-)

Yes, indeed! That's the one! I always loved that one, but the American version was all brown, if I am not mistaken. The front is the bag chamber door. You just undo that knob and lift the door to replace the rather small bag.

Nice vacuums, too! :-)

Here's my latest G.E. acquisition

A chrome, white and green Swivel-Top that I got from eBay. The reason I really wanted it was because in the photos it appeared to be dark turquoise and I had never seen one in that color before. But when it arrived I discovered it's green. But that's okay, because it's the EXACT model of one of my favorite childhood sweeper stories --- read on below.

The first photo is from the eBay listing. Doesn't it look kinda turquoise-y in that photo?!

Chrome is spotless -- I have to say, though, this is a pretty wimpy performer. As are all the GE Swivel Tops actually. I believe my Roll-Easy actually has more suction than this one.

GREEN G.E. STORY

(This story has appeared in a past issue of the VCCC newsletter but I thot I'd post it here as a "rerun" given the G.E. topic)

-------

One time I nearly got into BIG trouble for "breaking into" the home of one of my chums to see his mom's new vacuum cleaner. I had been over there one day playing with my friend when I saw a large carton in the living room, "General Electric Canister Vacuum Cleaner." The box was still sealed -- had just been delivered. I made some broad hints that it would be "neat" to see it but his mom wasn't in the mood. She said she was too busy and didn't have time to "fuss with the vacuum cleaner."

A couple of days later, I rode by their house on my bicycle and saw that no one was home. The very bad idea crossed my mind that I could sneak into the house just to get a peek at the new sweeper!

So I rode my bicycle around to the back of their house. I walked up the steps to their back porch. I peered in through the glass jalousie windows and couldn't see anything as it was dark inside.

I very timidly opened the porch door. A blast of hot air trapped inside the glassed-in porch hit me in the face. I went on into the enclosed porch, tip-toed across the terrazzo floor, and peered into the door leading into the kitchen. It was dark inside because all the blinds and shades were drawn. Clearly, no one was home.

I opened the kitchen door a crack and peered in. (This was in a simpler time, in a simpler place when and where, yes, people would go off for days at a time and leave their houses unlocked.)

Nothing.

I opened the kitchen door wider and stuck my head in, calling out in a cracked, tentative voice -- "H-hello?" -- just to make sure no one was there!

No response.

I went on into the house that was blanketed in dusk-like semi-darkness. I made my way through the kitchen and into the long hallway that was very dark. I peeked in the hall closet where I figured the vacuum cleaner would be. Not there!

I went back into the kitchen and looked into the pantry. No vacuum to be found!! Puzzled, I went back into the hallway and walked down to the end where the bedrooms were.

The parents' bedroom door was opened a few inches. I peeked in, and ... there it was! Sitting in the far corner in front of a window, bathed in a rippled glow of sunlight gleaming in through the window-blinds, was the G.E. box! I could see, to my great elation, that the box had been opened. The wands and hose were sticking up from the top.

I pushed the bedroom door open and ran over to the corner. I moved aside the hose and pulled the canister out from the box. I gasped in awe when I saw the gleaming chrome and dark-green body! It was so beautiful!! My mind was suddenly and singly focused on that sweeper, and I wanted to see it in all its radiant glory.

I set the canister on the floor. I pulled out the hose, wands, and large rug attachment. I put it all together and started "pretend vacuuming" with it, making "vrrrrrrrm" sounds as I did.

SUDDENLY ...

The magical spell was broken when I heard the crunch of gravel outside, telling me that someone was pulling up into the driveway! I heard the squeal of brakes ... a car door opening and slamming shut ... loud clompy footsteps crossing the floor of the front porch. I could tell from the heavy footsteps that it was my friend's Dad.

Ohhhh ... NO!!! (I did not know any swear words yet, or I surely would have used them!)

I totally panicked, not knowing whether to run for the back door, or to hide. I frantically looked left and right, to and fro -- considered crawling under the bed. But the sound of footsteps in the house told me there was no time. So I just ducked behind the bedroom door and hid in the space between the door and the wall behind it.

I heard the man walking through the house drawing the blinds and curtains and opening windows. He came down the hallway ... when he got to the opened door of the bedroom, he stopped in his tracks when he saw the new vacuum cleaner all set up and sitting in the room just by the doorway.

"What th..." he muttered, and came into the room. When he did, I coughed or made some other little noise. He whirled around and jerked the door back.

Shocked, I stared up into his bugged eyes and SCREAMED at the top of my lungs!

Even more shocked, he also SCREAMED at the top of HIS lungs!!

At first, he jumped back like he had been shot! Then he leaned over, roughly grabbed me by my shirt and yelled, What the heck are you doing in here, boy?"

I started crying and stammering that I just wanted to see their new sweeper."

"WHAT??" he exclaimed!" What kind of story is that? Why on earth would YOU want to see a SWEEPER?"

Crying and blubbering even more, I said, "I dunno ... I just wanted to see it."

He stood there, scratching his head, trying to figure out if I was lying or just out of my mind!

He looked at the vacuum cleaner ... looked at me ... looked at the vacuum cleaner again ... and it dawned on him that I was telling the truth as he realized it was all set up and ready to go.

He said, "Well, this is about the dumbest thing I ever heard of. Now you know you're going to have to be punished for this." He thought for a minute and said, "I know ... as your punishment, you have to use the sweeper in the entire house -- from front to back. You are not to stop until you have cleaned every room."

Well ....... he may not have realized at that moment that this was about the most wonderful "punishment" he could have dished out. But when he saw me RUN to the vacuum, excitedly carry it out to the living room and begin my chore, taking great care to use every single attachment including the crevice tool, he did figure out the folly of his decision!

In a little while, after I had gotten as far as the kitchen, his wife came in carrying a bag of groceries. When she saw me using her sweeper she became VERY annoyed. She asked her husband, "What is he doing with my new vacuum?"

Her husband looked at me, gave me a sly "wink-wink" and said, "Well, he had come by looking for some odd jobs to earn a little money, and the only thing I could think of was to let him run the sweeper."

She gave both of us a strange look, like, "Whaaaat????" but then just said to me very sternly, "Well, you be VERY careful with it! It's brand-new and I don't want you to ruin it!" (I wonder if maybe she had ever seen Mama's battered old Electrolux and feared her machine would suffer the same fate!")

The best part ... as I was leaving to go home, the man tossed a silver dollar in the air to "pay" me for my work!!

Some 25 years later, I returned to my old home town to give a musical concert at Daddy's former church. Afterward, who should come to greet me in the reception line but my friend's dad! He told me his wife was visiting a shut-in relative, and that his son - my friend - had gotten married and was living elsewhere. Then he asked me, "Are you still breaking into people's houses to see their vacuum sweepers?!"

I turned beet-red and said, "I really did appreciate you 'covering for me' with your wife."

He replied, "Well, I knew if your folks found out about it, you'd get a mighty whippin' -- didn't want to see that happen. But I'll have you know that =I= got in a heap of trouble with my wife for letting you use her new vacuum before she had had a chance to use it even once!"

I'm so jealous! Beautiful Swivel-Top, Charles! Pretty mint green color too. I love that story, and also the Grandma's Roll-Easy story too. I don't think the S-T is Glade green, like I saw in a '60 ad, and yours is newer anyway, isn't it?

Post# 21040 , Reply# 36   9/22/2007 at 17:04 (6,054 days old) by charles~richard ()

I am not an expert at all on G.E. machines. So I don't know how new this one is. The one at my friend's house would have been new in cir. 1967-68 as that was the general time when the above story happened and this one I just got, I am fairly sure, is pretty much identical. The only thing I do think that was different, but I can't swear to this, is that that machine had white tools - same hose, white with green tracing, but it does seem to me the plastic attachments were white.

Post# 21043 , Reply# 37   9/22/2007 at 17:05 (6,054 days old) by charles~richard ()

Oh, and one thing I do not like about this green swivel top is that the machine-end connector does not swivel. And the hose is fairly short and fairly stiff which means it starts kinking up in short order. I am going to make up a replacement hose for it with one of those swiveling plastic cuffs to remedy that problem. I have found the cuff and machine end, now I just need to find the hose handle.

Post# 21048 , Reply# 38   9/22/2007 at 18:03 (6,054 days old) by charles~richard ()
Once more bearing witness to the axiom

"Just because a hose LOOKS beautiful doesn't mean it's not rotten on the inside." Just like some people I guess.

Well, I did go ahead and make up a new hose for my "new" G.E. with a swiveling cuff at the machine end. (I won't tell you how I came upon a wand-end handle and break everyone's heart...) In doing so, I discovered that the suction power has increased TREMENDOUSLY. So here again is a woven hose that looked nearly perfect but was leaking badly.

And btw, after the fact, I did run the "Roger Proehl Hose Test" on it and on a scale of 1-10, it rated about a 4. All the more reason to, well, sacrifice it.

The new hose, while matching the trim, does not of course LOOK quite as lovely, but I do now have a fully functioning machine. And I must say, the suction is really very good. On my Suck-O-Meter, it pulled about a 68 --- not at all bad for a machine of that vintage and style.

Post# 21049 , Reply# 39   9/22/2007 at 18:06 (6,054 days old) by charles~richard ()

n.b., I am as much a purist as the next person, and do of course prefer the original hoses WHEN they function well and/or when I only intend to display the machine.

But in a case like this, where the machine really, relatively speaking, is not all that old, and I really do want to use it for cleaning (it actually works quite well with the new hose), am willing to forego the purism for the sake of a fully functional cleaner.

Total agreement here, Charles.

I will always save original hoses in nice cosmetic shape for display but I want to be able to run 'em, too. Inasmuch as that GE end wouldn't fit a Roll-Easy anywhichway I'm spared the anquish of 'one that got away', LOL

I did sacrifice a hard as rock & rotten cloth weave Air-Way 66 hose to salvage the hose ends.

After cutting off the hose 1" away from the ends I tried to inch by inch pull out the two wire coils & dryed rubber to no avail. Appeared to be assembled with rubber cement so I heated up both ends, on end, in a double boiler which softened everything enough to finally yank them out with lock pliers.

It worked and the metal ends and green plastic shrouds are fine...but was that the right way?

Dave

Hose ends are usually attached with a noxious glue called Pliobond. It's been a staple in the small appliance repair business (and shoe repair as well) for as long as I can remember. You apply the glue to two surfaces, let it set until it becomes a bit tacky then stick the two parts together. Once it fully sets (in 6-8 hours), it's pretty much set for good without a great deal of violence being inflicted upon the bonded parts.

With hoses that have had the ends pliobonded together you really can't remove the ends without ruining the hose. With coiled hoses, sticking the ends in very hot water for a few minutes will soften the vinyl and make removal easier but it's still going to be a tough job.

Dave, from the glimpse of your house as seen above, I bet there's just one adventure after another to be had there! My kind of place -- happily cluttered!

Hoses proudly up for all the world to see.

Even with the house reorganized its all still a delightful cluttered madness.

And who resides in the birdcage? Spotted that right away. I bred canaries mostly and a few show budgies for years as well as having numerous others about the place as pets. I gave it all up when we moved last year and am enjoying a feather and seed free house except for the moment I'm babysitting my sisters two canaries who she doesn't seem to eager to come collect.. LOL.. Anyways they have to be gone by the the time the other half gets back in a week or so

Our house is always a clutter as well. No matter what room, you'll always find a vacuum or two or three as well as who knows what laying about. Forget eating at the kitchen table and most of the dining room table, that's valuable space for clutter.. LOL Whenever I take a pic I have to carefully move stuff away from the camera view so it doesn't look as bad as it really is. Sometimes it gets on nerves so I go out and buy something to make me feel better.

Hi Pete, Paul the Cockatiel lives in the cage, my original Cockatiel named Pete, moved in with him in June of '03, and died in October '05. This poor bird is virtually ignored with the cats here. Charles~Richard, every room in the house at the moment is a minefield! Hopefully not for much longer. Anyone dig up any more funny vacuum pics? I see that lady is still on the job!

Another Roll-Easy

arh1953's profile picture
I am vacuum blessed! Kelly sold me a Roll-Easy, it showed up on my covered porch when I was out, and I almost tripped over it when I went out that way for something else. It may show up on another thread I posted over an hour ago, but if it didn't, here it is. It has all the copper colored metal, a great new hose(beige)the original cord and floor tool, and an upholstery tool. I'll be looking for extras as time goes on. Two Roll-Easys in less than three months. Wheee!

Very nice, but two Roll Easy's is one too many for one person so if you wouldn't mind boxing it up and sending it to me I'd be obliged. LOL

I see you have a Shark sweeper there. I just bought my mom one about 3 days ago at a liquidation place for $19..then they had them on sale yesterday for $9 so I raced over to get a couple more but they were sold out.. She really likes hers

But since you now have version 1 and 3, Alan, you must bravely shoulder the onerous burden and responsibility of finding Version 2. :-)

and perhaps the next one will come with two hoses, one being trash for the ends to be donated to a worthy Canadian in need.

Congrats, they are lovely.

Pete, no one EVER had too many Roll-Easys! Yours is right around the corner. I have wanted one ever since I saw Charles~Richard's Roll-Easy section in his site!

I paid $3.59 for my Shark sweeper, at GoodWill. I love mine, but it could use a beauty treatment and a de-tangle job. I have never seen new ones in US for less than $59.95. What kind of liquidation place do you have? We have Big Lots.

Thanks Dave! You can be assured if I happen across any extra copper colored wands and ends, they're yours. Check out this funky tool. I assume it is the one that came with this machine, it is well used, the side closest to the camera is worn way down.

That is odd wear pattern; the bristles are clearly ground down and broken. I wonder just what surface someone was using that brush on?

Thanks for being on the lookout for me, Alan. I have copper wands. Its the GE hose ends I need, even if they are chrome. If it has a hose joining them, that's a bonus. LOL

Much of the time that accesories and vac cases have white or yellowish marks on them its simply baseboard paint transfer that cleans off very nicely with a firm rub. Its amazing how much black & gray gunk builds up on tool's rubber bump strips, too.

This is usually a good place to find stuff cheap. We finally got a store here in this little town. A lot of the stuff is refurbished though.

Sorry for being a bit neglectful as of yet, Alan (i'm sowwy :P) but good call on the new (older ;p) Roll Easy :) that one looks to be in even better condition!

Even if the floortool had a double life as a dog toy or something..

Take Care.

Ian :]

Nice Roll Easy

Arh,

Is that the Roll Easy from Kerry in PA? That is a real nice vac. I saw it when I visited him at his shop last week. I am preparing a "wish list" for him as he gets lots of stuff in. His workshop is literally up the road from my house. He has lots of cool Kirby vacs and he showed me a couple restoration projects he is working on.

My new Roll-Easy

arh1953's profile picture
Hi Ian, Electrogirl, I love this Roll-Easy, it is the one from Kerry. I think it is a beautiful machine, it has a couple of very small dents on it, but for a 50 year old machine, it hasn't been abused. I need to take a Magic Eraser to the trim, and put in a request for a dusting brush, crevice tool, and floor tool. The hose is great, but I am going to keep an eye out for some vinyl spray dye, maybe a car color from the '50s or '60s, I put a note and link on the off-topic thread dealing with that. Nice hearing from you!

Captain Nelson's Roll-Easy

arh1953's profile picture
I'm half watching the colorized first season of "I Dream Of Jeannie", and lo and behold, it has Sandra Gould (second Gladys Kravitz) as a cleaning lady, whom Tony told not to use the vacuum cleaner because it was broken. She "fixed" it by yanking the handkerchief out of the nozzle. It was a poorly colorized '57 Roll-Easy. The body of the machine had not been colored at all, just the wheels! I saw another post about this first vacuum, but don't remember where. And of course it was the same type Alice Mitchell had that Dennis vacuumed the yard with.

Here's the new baby

arh1953's profile picture
My new Reach-Easy will donate the flat floor tool to the concave Roll-Easy, the white tools will go to the beige and brown Cord-Reel, and this sad grey dust brush will stay with its original vacuum. The pink tool from Trg's Roll-Easy will go to the Reach-Easy at least because that style is indiginous to the Reach-Easy. I will go back to the Ugly Vacuum Thread when I can get back in. I will be looking for an aluminum nozzel end and some grey tools for the new vacuum as time goes on. And an aluminum curved wand for the new toy too. And some turquoise Roll-Easy crevice, dust, upholstery tools too. I don't want much!

Alan, I will keep my eyes open for Roll-Easy tools in turquoise. That one thrift always has a bin of vacuum tools. That is where I got those Hoover tools I posted about a little while back. You just have to tell me what to look for so I know they are the proper tools.

OK Electrogirl, the best thing I can tell you is to find Charles~Richard's profile, go to his favorite link, and look under the Roll-Easy thread. I wanted to just post it here, but I think that would have been a violation of his requests. Once you click on his site, Roll-Easy is a quick find, has excellent pictures, and a lot of other neat things too. I was going to post Aeoliandave's old Roll-Easy instruction pictures, but I was denied access. That is in the forum archives. Good luck and enjoy!
