I bought this old hoover manual on ebay the other day and it just arrived. It is the oldest I have seen. I think it is for the model N but I want to check with the hoover experts out there. It refers to a "Special" and a "Baby" model. I shows a push button switch like a model n and the parts sections show strange looking fans and a 3 piece handle.

Here are the pics. If anyone wants to see all of them I can post them.

I noticed at the end it lists Hoover in Windsor Ontario Canada so it must be old....they intially opened there only a few short years after N.Canton but soon moved to Hamilton Ontario for most of their Cdn history ending in Burlington next door to Hamilton.

Found the dates, Windsor opened in 1911 and the they moved to Hamilton in 1919 which is the same year as the first UK plant I believe.

It has to be printed after 1918 since it says "North Canton, Ohio". Our town used to be called "New Berlin", however, Boss Hoover worked with a local committee to change the name to North Canton just after the WWI since no one was feeling fond of anything German at the time.

The fans were not mounted on a plate and look very strange by todays standards. But they did move air with very little electricity. Good eye on the push button switch. It is a very simple yet effective feature as well as being very well made. These machines were all sand cast not die cast. This made them pricey since they could not manufacture them in larger numbers. They only had 900 employees at the time and they were making leather goods until 1919.

In 1919, Hamilton was established which would date your book to 1918. In 1919 they started selling them in London. This was also the year "It Beats As It Sweeps As It Cleans" became the company's slogan.

Thanks for sharing the instruction booklet. I have never seen one printed like that. It looks to be in very good shape too! Paper for these machines is so hard to find. I hope that you got a good deal on it too!

Thanks for all of the info guys. I did get a very good deal on it. It was only $5.50 total. I knew it was old when I bought it but I thought more along the lines of a 102 or 105 because I figured that the model N manual would be impossible to find. I had also figured that if it was a model N manual I would not be the only bidder, especial after seeing a hoover baby model manual from the early 20s go for $45.00 a few months ago.

It reminds me of how the old Hoover Baby models would sell for only $25.00 because no one seemed to know what it was. Now you would be lucky to get one for under $200.00. I guess that no one knew what this manual was for and I was the only one that thought it could be something good.

It seems like I have very good luck with Hoover stuff from that era ever since I got my model 541 complete with attachments and manuals for only $5.00 and my model 102 was not much more than that. Oddly enough I have had no luck getting newer stuff. The newest full size Hoover I own is a model 725 with a 750 motor.
