Hi guys, it's been awhile since I've been on here. Figured I'd see who else loves their Hoover canisters. Post all your pics of your Hoover canisters here! Whether it be a WindTunnel, PowerMax, Futura, PortaPower, Constellation, Dimension, etc.

Here are some pics of my Hoover canister trio (really wish I hadn't gotten rid of my two PowerMaxes and my old Dimension 1000). Two S3670 Anniversary WindTunnels and a PortaPower I.

Bought both S3670s new, bought the first one online after our main Kenmore canister finally bit the dust (pun intended), the second one was on sale at Home Depot and I figured what the heck.

My PortaPower was the first vacuum cleaner bought specifically for me. I have two universal wands from a ShopVac on it because the old plastic wands snapped in half, and now these ones are doing the same! Going to order two new metal wands with the tab clip for the old style Hoover locking pins which the PortaPower has.

Anyway, let's see those canisters!

Here's my PortaPower.

How do you like it?

Ahhh! You stole my Dimension 1000! Haha, we left it in our camp up in the Adirondacks and one year it was gone and was replaced by some awful Bissell upright... I think my mom got rid of it silently so I wouldn't get upset over it :(

Hoover PowerMax Supreme S3530

durango159's profile picture
This PowerMax Supreme has the Futura style head as this was Hoover's last canister vacuum cleaner to sport this power nozzle hood design. I have this machine now and love it. It does my weekly thorough deep cleaning for the house.

Hoover Spirit canister

durango159's profile picture
I sold this a few years ago but this was a Hoover Spirit canister that I refurbished. Power nozzle is same design that would have come with this unit, but a different color. I do not have the model number off of this anymore.

Hoover PowerMax Deluxe S3601

durango159's profile picture
Hoover PowerMax Deluxe S3601. I refurbed and sold this. Got it very cheap at a yard sale but power head motor had an issue. It ran fine but would've annoyed me so I sold it.

Previous owner really trashed this machine. It was filthy. They cut wires to headlight socket and hose is not original and not the correct replacement. They put a deluxe hose on, but removed the circuit board in the handle. Really strange. Despite being called "Deluxe" this model from factory did not have a belt view window and did not have agitator on/off switch.

Hoover Dimension 1000 S3277

durango159's profile picture
This machine was my grandparents. May the rest in piece!! It then became my parents, but the original Quadraflex power nozzle broke about 10 years ago. It would have been $150 or so for a new one and my parents passed on that. We've held onto the suction unit, the motor is great. Cord winder is broken, and no longer active, and front swivel wheel is missing. It is kept in my parents attic as a spare unit.

The power nozzle on it is from a Hoover Turbo Power 5000 S3577 that we used to have. The Turbo Power 5000 cord winder broke and we parted the machine out to fix some other PowerMax canister vacs of ours.

Hoover PowerMax Deluxe S3608

durango159's profile picture
9.3 Amp system. Terrific suction, terrific power nozzle. Very efficient canister vacuums. Gorgeous red color. This is at my parents house. This model did not have a belt view window or agitator on/off switch.

Notice the upgraded logo on power nozzle compared to previous PowerMax canisters. Also very smartly added was an accordian on wire where it exited power nozzle housing to reduce strain in that area.

Hoover PowerMax Runabout S3614

durango159's profile picture
9.3 Amp system. This unit was made by Hoover for Kmart. Oddly enough it was a more deluxe version of PowerMax line at the time since it came with agitator on/off switch on hose handle and belt view window. While Kmart was selling this fully featured canister, Strawbridges and other higher scale department stores were selling the more stripped down PowerMax Supreme S3530 which you see above.

***Tool lid in photo is not original to this machine and would have come from a Windtunnel Plus Canister with air turbine powered hand tool.

Durango, how do you like your PowerMax canisters? I had the WindTunnel S3639 which was similar and while it cleaned well, I wasn't too impressed with the plastic and how cheap it felt. Last I knew, the guy who I sold it to is still using it... they keep going strong!

Hoover PowerMax Deluxe S3607

durango159's profile picture
Well this one is a very sad story for me!! I bought off eBay in October 2003 this machine as a factory refurb from abcvacuumwarehouse. I bought this for my living away at college after just moving into fraternity house. The unit survived college and was successful at being an A+++ cleaner for many clients homest that I cleaned. Then I moved home with my parents and this machine was put into spare bedroom with many more of my items from living away. Then I moved into my parents vacation house in South Carolina. My parents supplied another vacuum for that house and cars were full and the PowerMax did not move with me but I was hoping to eventually bring it down there. Well, my sister bought a house with her now XFiance and somehow my parents WITH OUT My permission gave her this machine. Her XFiance vacuumed underneath their broken leaking dishwasher just before the arrival of their brand new dishwasher. Well he sucked up water and killed 2 Hoover canister vacuums that day!!!

So this machine now has the motor from my parents Turbo Power 5000 suction unit and because of that I've left the vacuum with them, but I stole back the power nozzle!!!

Really loved this vacuum, it served me quite well and took care of my allergy problem in college as the other vacuum that roomates supplied wasn't cutting the mustard. I made a lot of money taking this vacuum to work with me cleaning houses too!!!

***This machine did not originally come with an on/off agitator switch on hose, I bought that special as a nice upgrade as I love that feature and it was perfectly placed on that hose handle!!

I have this machine but the power nozzle is waiting for a new hose to connect suction duct to arrive. Should be here shortly.

The suction unit is being repaired by another member on this forum. We will meet up in the next few weeks and I'll post pics of entire machine.

In the meantime, I bought this ad off of eBay to admire!!!

It is too bad that Hoover never discovered the quick disconnect connections at the hose and power nozzle ends.  That lacking feature is one reason I never had a real interest in Hoover cannisters.

Yeah, thats one thing I didn't like about the earlier Hoover canisters. But with the simpler design there is less stuff to go wrong... one thing that plagued our Kenmore canister with the quick disconnect was the wands would short out even though we'd baby it. There's always a trade off.

Does the PowerMax have the same motor as the Futura canister? I need a new switch cover for my futura. I ordered one for a Windtunnel canister and it didn't fit.

Post# 212343 , Reply# 33   1/3/2013 at 11:09 (4,129 days old) by dysondestijl (east midlands, UK)

hooverman2121: well i never use it, its really dirty as it was a trash find. filtration isn't too bad, suction not the best but substantial enough.
also in the uk our hoover canisters are badged as vaxs, and most people like them, but some of them can be a bit fragile, i'm not too interested in them to be honest.

Of all the older Hoover canisters, the Dimension 1000 is probably my favorite... probably because that's what I grew up with.

Had a blue one without the variable speed control, and a black one with the speed control that my mom gave to her friend because she liked it so much.

Hi Kenny,

I believe the motor for PowerMax and Futura canisters was the same. Now over time they revised the on/off switch. It also depends on does your Futura use cord wrap storage or cord rewind. The switch pedals were different on the cord wrap storage. Some of the older on/off switch pedals used a stem in the center to activate the switch. The revised ones don't need that stem. YOu can can cut off the center stem and then that switch pedal should fit over your on/off switch. Also while you're doing, you may consider removing the spring that's inside that's on top of the on/off switch, it's really not necessary and machine is much easier to use without that spring in there.

you can check schematics at www.hescoinc.com.... Find your model and see. Please post a picture of your Futura and other Hoover's as well!!

Kenny,

I can tell you that your machine would date from at least the fall of 1993 as that was when Hoover began the use of the "cleaning effectiveness per amp" thing. All the brochures I found (all from eBay auctions) are those models from circa 1990.

If you could please give me the model # and serial # from yours, I would appreciate it, and from there I can give you the motor switch part # from www.hescoinc.com/.... Example serial #: 049400692797 (0494=April 1994)

I suppose you only have the cleaner unit but not the power nozzle which would have been the version used for models S3545/3555/3565.

~Ben

Now I own a Celebrity S3187 & a Supremacy like the S3565?

Here's my S3187 Celebrity; I just need to put the selector dial back onto the rug nozzle.

Everyones canisters look great. Kenny, I sent you a message through the forum with power switch pedals with and with out post, along with rear power nozzle wheels. Just wish I knew whether your machine used post or not. The pedal with a post is discontinued and hard to find. The without post pedal is still available even on Hoover.com.

Wheels are easy, as they're still made today for all the original style Windtunnel Power nozzles. All parts will be black in color.

Below are some of my Hoover power nozzle headlights in the dark!! Hoover PowerMax Deluxe S3607 head on the right and Hoover PowerMax Supreme S3530 (Futura style) head on the left.

Kenny, a 2 brush agitator will also fit your machine, if desired. It would be part number 48414081. Get Genuine Hoover and not a CWP brush roll. The CWP Elite brush roll is terrible on Futura/ PowerMax power nozzles.

This is only if desired, your brush roll looks to be in great condition still.

Anybody that needs Hoover parts, type your part number in the Hoover website search bar first!!! Their prices are very low compared to many other sites and most of the time they have free shipping, with promo code. Currently Free Shipping promo code is: NEWYEAR

Go to Hescoinc.com first to find your model number machine or similar and find part number. Put that in Hoover search bar. If that returns nothing, then web search the part number or "part name" as stated in schematic and see if another website returns a more up to date part number. Then input that part number into Hoover search box. Yahoo search is nice because it opens the selected websites in a new tab, and you always have access to the original search query window.

Here are the Hoover Power nozzles above with room lights and camera flash back on.

John Gregory, have you visited this page yet??

If you have, wondering if you've seen Kenny's Futura and know whether that switch needs a post or not in the pedal. My research shows that the Pedal with Switch is 38422162 and with out post is 38422164. I'm thinking it looks like a low profile switch so it needs a post. But I've never worked on or used one of these Futuras with the lack of cord reel, so I'm not sure exactly what the pedal design looks like. Your input is priceless.

Also we would love pictures from you John. We know you have some Hoover canisters like that vault Celebrity, it would picture so well here and perhaps a Dimension 1000!!!

Have a wonderful weekend to everyone. TGIF!!!

This PowerMax nozzle was on eBay and I just love the color of it so much that I saved a picture from it!! LOL!! Not sure what model it is for though. The S3606 PowerMax Deluxe would be similar shade and not have belt view window but the sticker would be the updated version and it would have accordian on wire. S3603 or S3603-040 would be a slightly darker blue I believe and would have a belt window.

Purchased this Hoover Duros canister about an hour ago. It was cheap probably because someone had used an “S” style bag instead of an “SR” type bag. So I headed off my local vacuum shop to purchase the correct style of bag. This will be a fun vacuum to cleanup. It’s small, compact and looks easy to use. Best of all it’s a HOOVER.

Ben - I will try to get the model numbers off the port-a-powers today.

Rich - I had the Hoover Anniversary Windtunnel canister at one time. I liked it except the small wheels on the power nozzle made some ugly track marks on my plush carpet.

Let me know how the Duros turns out. I never got into those. It was a design that they in a way copied from Sanyo so in my mind the Duros is not a "True Hoover". I have heard decent remarks about them though. Is the wand a universal end? There is no bare floor brush according to Hoover for that model.

The Duros I can't really comment on. I remember those vacuums from back in the day as well, and I was only 8 or 9 years old at the time. The fact it is a reused Sanyo...do you guys think Hoover had a contract signed with Sanyo?

I also like to point out that Hoover could in some position, make newer versions of the Windtunnel bagged canister, and invent a new and original power nozzle, while still making it use Type S bags.

John Gregory-- Thank you for the feedback. Glad the two of us agree again. I knew my feelings were legitimate of why I've never the considered the Duros "A True Hoover". Since the first time, I ever saw it on their website, my thought was "Really, we're stamping Hoover on Sanyo stuff now!" The one thing I liked about them, was the box. The Duros box was teal blue and had a picture of the agitator cavity on it. Since I love pictures of agitator cavity's I thought that was neat!!

John Long-- Your solution is simple: Anything with a power nozzle!! So you're 2 mint green Celebrity's, new Spirit and sure why not some of those Constellations you have lying around.

I hope someone has a Hoover Guardsman and Hoover Celebrity Elite II to post. We need more Celebrities on here!!

Well, I guess it's time to shock John Long with a pic of my very own vintage Hoover canister. I got this from a fellow VacuumLand member, Zachary Grant (Goadie12). AMAZING suction this thing has!! This pic was taken just after I got it. In addition to the Quadraflex Powermatic PN, I have also obtained a Powermatic PN & put an outboard cord on the hose. One day I will be able to find a set of vintage Hoover wands with white clips to use with it, & maybe even upgrade to an electric hose, as I find this hose is very short.

And just when you thought I didn't own a Hoover or was a Hoover fan, eh John? Fooled ya!

Yes, indeed I am glad to have this cleaner! And I personally think the Celebrity, in all it's various models, was the best Hoover canisters they ever produced. The Spirit & Futura models, as nice as they were, just weren't made as well or had quite the same power it seemed. As for the Dimension....can't speak to that model, as I have never tried one, & only briefly seen one in our repair shop about 5 years ago before the local guy closed his shop in December 2012.

The ONLY bad thing I can say about Hoover canisters, in general, is the green bag material they used seems to leak a LOT of dust. For an allergy sufferer like myself, that's a bad thing. I wish there were micro-filtration bags available for the Celebrity. I replaced the motor filter with a Panasonic HEPA-type white pad filter, cut to the same shape as the foam Hoover filter. It was falling apart anyways. But then again, this was in the days when vacuum manufacturers never gave filtration much thought, so all things considered, I can live with that for it's superior vintage quality & performance :-)

Rob

It's been awhile since I've been here... Beginning of the year I moved out to an apartment out in Colonie with my partner. Everytime I take the trash down to the dumpster I take a quick look to see if anyone has thrown away any decent machines.

Saw a PowerMax with its hose and wands missing, decided it wasn't worth rescuing after I saw half the bag compartment was destroyed :( Sad day for me.

In the process of moving some of my machines over to my apartment, my guy doesn't want a whole lot of vacuums in our place... been using the S3670 as my daily driver, haven't had a problem yet with this machine knock on wood. The apartment/building we are in was recently renovated so I've been getting a lot of carpet fuzzies!

Kinda would like to find a way to lubricate the front wheels as the squeaking is driving me insane. I took them off and lubed them up with graphite powder and that seemed to work for a few days and then the squeaking was back again... ruins that wonderful power nozzle sound!

It's a Constellation 86.  It's in perfect condition.  Only thing wrong with it is a very small dent near the top.  When I got it, it needed bags and a new filter.  A quick visit to Peacock's  Sella Vac, and I had the bags, but they sadly didn't have the filter.  After some research, I found that the original filter was round and 12 inches in diameter.  I pulled out one of my Kirby HEPA bags, opened it up and used an old LP for a stencil and made a new filter for it myself.  Works like a charm, and I'll bet it protects the motor better than the original filter did.

Nice Connie. I FINALLY got that one, too. Glad you got one AND that you're using a filter. Do you have enough bags? I like your wand, too. (Boy, that didn't sound good). I meant, telescoping wand. I only have one or two with that arrow on it.
We'll have to see about getting you an orange and seal greige one. What would the shipping be...that could be a problem.
They are wonderful vacuums, indeed.

Thanks John!

I bought a 4 pack of genuine Hoover bags for it , so at least the bags are genuine, even if the filter isn't. ( thought you would faint away when you heard I made a filter for it from a Kirby bag!  LOL)   I like the telescoping wand that came with it too.  I have another wand from a Dial A Matic attachment set, and it is not nearly as good as the Connie's wand.

I think it cost a little over $30 dollars to have my 86 shipped to me.  Wasn't bad.  I'm still interested in rescuing one of your blue Traditions from the cellar.  I've been looking at eBay to get an idea of shipping costs for them, and it seems pretty reasonable as well.

My favourite Hoover just because of the design, I very rarely use it to try and keep it in new condition.

Those Kirby(s) are still there. Depending on price, shipping, you'll certainly be thought of first.
Yes, I did get a little week in the knees (and NOT the good way) when I heard about that filter. I'm alright now, however.

Does anyone know of some actually decent generic bags? These WindTunnel canisters seem kinda picky as to which bags are in them! Usually use the OEM 4010808S hepa bags, but figured if there were a cheaper alternative I could try, then I could save a few bucks.

Tried the Envirocare bags, not too impressed... not the best nor the worst but not something I'd want to use long-term in my machines.

Also, wanted to see about CWP brushrolls. I am restoring an S3639 WindTunnel for my mother's friend and the original brushroll is shot; bristles are worn down and the bearings are melted from so much pet hair. I wanted to see if the savings are really worth it or if I should just go with OEM.

It seems the consensus here is that the CWP brushrolls, though decent products, are not too fitted for these machines/power nozzles, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Get the genuine Hoover brush roll for S3639

durango159's profile picture
I have not luck with any of the CWP brush rolls for any vacuum yet. I have the Windtunnel style generic brush roll in 3 Windtunnel uprights. It has ruined all 3 machines. It killed one completely, and the other 2 just did not clean as I feel a Hoover should.

I tried the generic Elite style 12" brush roll to run in my Hoover PowerMax canister. Hoovers version 48414081 is designed to fit the Hoover Elite uprights and Hoover PowerMax/ Futura style canister power nozzles. The CWP version was awful in the canister and did not have it running and sounding well.

I strongly recommend replacing your the agitator in your Hoover Windtunnel Plus S3639 with a genuine Hoover Windtunnel canister brush roll 48414084 also known as part number 90001371. The chevron design on it is completely matched to the suction duct location in that power nozzle.

Rob, thanks for the heads up. The person who I am doing the overhaul for said she'd prefer OEM parts so CWP is outta the picture.

On a side note, my friend bought a Hoover S3670 at Home Depot this past week to replace her dying Kenmore and I am pretty sure the power nozzle has a CWP brush roll in it. Has the yellow bristles, non-chevron design and looks exactly like the one on the CWP site. I should do a side-by-side and see how they compare.

Still have one! The hose is suppler than something very suppley (What's supple enough to compare)??(??)?

I heard these are going on the Rare side?

I own one of those none-cord-reel Futura canisters, too. Bought it age ago at a Flea Market. The Dimension came from a Garage Sale.

Let's see...Perhaps a Porta-Power? Take your choice of Pumpkin on wheels or Montgomery Ward Delight!

Constellations, Portables, Ha, Maybe one day!

Here's the fully refurbished Wards, Not exactly "Canister", but it's all I have pictures of right now! Only have the before pictures of the Porta-Powers on hand...

Do request pictures of the others if you please!

My Penncrest Canister (Hoover Constellation). The Constellations are my favorite. I might like to get a green Slimline as well. I saw one at an estate sale recently but passed it up because it had no hose.

Yeah, my Penncrest is a work in progress. I managed to get the electrical tape off the hose. It's cracked, I may try to shorten it. I also need to replace the filter.

Oh, and that Kenmore is nice too. Are those the lambswool pads for the attachments?

Why thank you!

super-sweeper's profile picture

Yes, I believe those are pads for dusting on wood surfaces with the attachments,

Quoted from the user manual:

"DUST MITTS-Easy-To-Use Dust Mitts slip over the Floor Brush or Fabric Tool. Use for bare floors, table tops, counters, walls, and ceilings. Some dirt will go through the Dust Mitt into the cleaner. Some will be held in the acrylic pile of the Mitt. After or during use, take the Dust Mitt off and clean with the vacuum hose. Mitts may be washed in warm water-detergent solution or in a washing machine"

So yes, The floor Mitt is still sealed, while the Fabric tool one has been previously opened.

Nice. I read about the pads in the Sears catalog. You should make a thread on it and post the manual if you could some time!

I'll compete in that Hoover/ Kenmore battle!!!

durango159's profile picture
My buddy John Long, whom you refer as "Mr. Hoover" is much more into the upright sector than canister sector of Hoover in addition to other vintage appliance categories that Hoover used to offer such as irons, toasters, etc. Now he does have several Constellations, some Portapowers, Suitcases and many vintage straight suction machines. He has a couple of Celebrities and just got 2 vault power head canisters a Futura and a Spectrum. In uprights, there's very few models he doesn't have from early vintage machines, to 69's, 1070's, D.A.M's, Convertibles, Elites, etc.

What John doesn't have in power head canisters, I'll gladly supplement, just let me know the date. I'll fill the trunk. We can mix and match power nozzles and suction units!!!

Here's most of my Hoover power nozzles.

RE:Kenmore,

super-sweeper's profile picture

I'd love to scan the manual, I'm sure Automatic Ephemera could use it well. I have a bunch of manuals I need to scan, Just as soon as I can figure out how to adjust the scan quality (Not easy for a Guy used to plugging in a Typewriter and going from there)!

I have a copy-righted Hoover Convertible manual I can post, Automatic Ephemera couldn't use it due to the Copy-Right. Would you like that?

I have done 2 threads on the Kenmore before, One upon arrival, Second upon restoration. I completely tore down the motor and fixed a failed, dried bearing. Spins like a top now!

Now, Give me an F (Not, not for failing HOOVER Class)! F Is for FAIRFAX!

Fairfax had a model with a Hoover Celebrity style power head on a machine at one time. They look so cool!!! Need to find a video or picture of one of those.

Fehrfacks! LOL I love then tho. I've got 3 newish ones including a current model. I also saw this threat and thought to myself 'I don't really have many Hoover canisters at all...' Only to run through my head and realize I have a good number of them. When I was born my parents had a 2 tone green Spirit with the PN. It's a basic model with no tool rack or headlight. But it served us well and remains in my collection today.
